Developmentally Appropriate Practice is the philosophy of teaching children that is based off of guidelines from The National Association for the Education of Young Children. The first main idea behind Developmentally Appropriate Practice is to teach children at their current level of understanding and development. The second idea behind Developmentally Appropriate Practice is to help all children in your care to reach appropriate goals that will facilitate the child’s development and learning. Developmentally Appropriate Practice affects the development of curriculum for infants and toddlers because it is important to keep the development of the child in mind when planning their day. There are many factors to keep in mind. It is important …show more content…
The first is soft and hard. There should be a mix of hard surfaces and soft surfaces for children to play on. The second is intrusion and seclusion. There should be areas where children can play together and explore and there should also be areas where the children can go to be alone and play quietly. The third is high mobility and low mobility. High mobility areas are large open areas where children can explore. Low mobility areas allow children to engage in quiet activities without being over stimulated. The fourth is open materials and closed materials. There should be toys such as blocks that allow children to explore and play with in many different ways as well as toys such as puzzles that have just one solution. The last is simple and complex. There should be toys that are easy to explore such as balls, sand, and books as well as ones that are more complex such as instruments, technical toys, and puzzles. Magda Gerber created a term “educarer”. She created this term to describe the importance of incorporating education into the caring of infants and children.
