1. ”Inside the tunnel, where broken beer bottles, old leaves, and other, as yet indiscriminate, things littered the ground, I became one with this man. He held my life in his hand. This passage stood out to me because of Sebold’s ability to capture the reader with her powerful writing. During the passage, Sebold explained the pure terror behind her rape along with her having to fight for her life; Sebold knew if she had any chance of surviving her rape, she would have to satisfy her attacker. This passage occurred right after Lila, Alice’s best friend, was raped by an intruder for unknown reasons. Lila made the decision to not pursue her rape case because it is too much for her. This quote shocked me because Lila witnessed a great deal of success with Alice’s case. As a rape victim, you would think Lila would want justice and want her rapist behind bars. Rather than justice, Lila would rather put her rape behind her and ignore it. This passage keeps me wondering why Lila does not want all the answers to her rape, she does not wish to know his motive or his identity.
