LP6. Identify the role of protein in the body.

Directions:

In this assignment you will write an essay on protein requirements. Begin by performing an Internet search for "high protein diets." Review several websites and choose the one that interests you most; be sure your selection adequately outlines the high protein diet plan. Critique the high protein diet you’ve researched (be sure to include the link in which you analyzed). The critique should include the following:

• A summary of the diet.

• Identify the most important facts about the diet.

• State your opinion about the diet.

• Support your opinion with relevant facts or research.

Next, analyze your own protein intake. You should collect, organize, and report data related to your own protein requirements. For your analysis, you should:

• Use your own weight (or a fictitious weight if you are uncomfortable using your own), and figure your own protein needs based on your weight in kilograms, the RDA for protein at 0.8 grams/kg body weight.

• Collect your data.

• Record your results.

After reviewing the high protein diet and analyzing your own protein requirements, write a two-page report comparing your protein requirements to that of the high protein diet. Provide a list of foods that the plan recommends the person eat and compare that to your own diet findings. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the high protein diet from a nutritional standpoint and provide a rationale why someone may choose to be, or should not be, on a high protein diet.

Submit this assignment with references to your instructor via the dropbox “LP6 Assignment: Protein Requirements.” This assignment is worth 100 points and will be graded according to the following scoring guide.

Fad Diets

...prior assignments. 1) This topic is important to me because throughout my life I have constantly researched different diets, hoping to find one that will help me lose weight and keep it off. With this research I hope to find one that not only help me lose weight, but also begin a new life style. 2) As a result of the on again, off again weight gain I began to see myself as a failure, and also as a fat person who could not keep the weight off. Through this research I am hoping to find not a diet but a life style that is healthily. I hope to be able to recognize a Fad diet as soon as I see one, and be able to educate my friend and family on this matter. Who is your primary audience or reader? Why? Be detailed in your answer about your audience. 1) The targeted audience would be people looking for a quick fix diet, maybe the girl that needs to get into that little black dress this weekend or the boy that will go swimming for the first time with a new girlfriend and wants to look slimmer fast. 2) I believe my secondary audience would be people like myself that just want a diet that works and are looking for new ways to lose weight. Not a quick fix, but a diet that is not very difficult and keeps the weight off. 3) I think the majority of my targeted audience would agree with me, even though the truth hurts. Fad diets are not healthy and are indeed a quick fix. But, people sometimes want to believe otherwise, even though the proof is presented to...

The American Diet

...Maria Arriola Allegra Hyde English 101 16 November 2014 The American Diet Getting a fat whopper from McDonalds, large fries and a coke is seen as an average meal for Americans. There are many diets out there like the Paleo diet, and the Atkins diet and the standard american diet which all revolve around the consumption of meat, dairy and fats. The very thought of an American eating a vegan plant based diet is seen as extreme and often questioned. Eating no meat, or products derived from animals automatically makes one an extreme animal rights activist that solely lives on salads. Nutrition is often overlooked by doctors but it may be the underlying issue of a spectrum of problems. Thomas Edison once stated “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but will rather cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” Many do not realize the great importance of nutrition and its correlation to health. What enters the body may greatly affect the overall individual physically and mentally. Americans have become unhealthier by the years due to the vast number of processed products sold in our grocery stores today. Many do not take notice of their daily consumption of food while others obsess over the very thought of their next meal. There is a great epidemic in America where more people die from the effects of overeating rather than starvation. Many resort to drugs, and surgeries as a quick fix in hopes of improving their health which leaves many wallets...

How Dieting Influences Your Offspring

...At first i just thought that dieting only meant you lost weight, now i know that isn't completely true. not only would a diet of only Double QTR. Pounders with cheese make you gain weight, but if you're a male, it could potentially determine the lifespan of your future sons, son. As a woman, pregnancy could mean changing your diet completely if you really care about your child and know bout this. And in changing your diet, of course that means something further than just stop smoking or drinking so much. When it comes to genes expressing themselves or showing themselves so much, your diet is one of the key factors. As the paper stated, a males’ efficiency or consistency of your eating habits will actually effect your sons offspring through their lifespan. i don't think you get it. The fact that I eat so often means my sons children will live less. now that I know this, every time I eat ill effectively be killing my grandchildren. So no more fun in food anymore. Also (kind of) related to dietary habits is your consumption of products contained inside of polycarbonate plastic. Just drinking a water bottled with this plastic will have an effect on your children. Through the mice it made the offspring yellow like ones eyes during liver failure. through the mice experiment it was shown the offspring birthed from the mothers that were not fed the BPA in the plastic were brown and healthy. As it turns out, if the mother is fed BPA but still fed methyl rich foods, thus giving the fetus...

Fad Diets

...Fad Diets: Positive or Negative? Keith Daugherty DeVry University Fad Diets: Positive or Negative? Chad, a middle aged man, goes to work every day of the week to provide for his wife and three children. He wants nothing more than to live a full and healthy life and to always be there for his family, just like his father was there for him and his mom, growing up. Chad attended his annual check-up with the family care provider that he has seen for many years. He has always felt fine and thought he was as healthy as can be. While Chad was with his family care provider, he was told that his cholesterol levels were high, that he has high blood pressure, and that he has an increased chance of experiencing a myocardial infarction, also known as a heart attack. His family care provider decided that Chad needed to lose some weight and start eating healthier in order to lower his blood pressure, lower his cholesterol levels, and decrease his chance of suffering a myocardial infarction. Chad agreed to make his doctor’s recommended lifestyle changes because he wanted to be there for his family no matter what the cost. After leaving his family care provider’s office and speaking with this wife about the bad news, he realized that he did not have a plan of action as to how he was going to lose the extra weight that was the source of his health problems. He didn’t know many things about eating healthier or maintaining a healthy lifestyle so he was unsure of where to begin. Later that...

Dieting

...people going on the outrageous fad diets and then later hear them complaining about how they gained all the weight back and then some. Then there are those ‘fad diets’ which scare me, as do the dieting pills. I mean they can be helpful for some, but losing weight really quickly cannot be healthy for anyone. I believe that healthy eating and exercising are the best way to stay healthy. There are endless amounts of diets that we may choose from. Some of the most popular diets are the Atkins Diet, Mediterranean, Vegan, Weight Watchers, Raw Food, and the list goes on. The food choices people make isn’t only about filling up, it can also be an expression of who we are, when we are, and sometimes what we value in a sense. The expression, “You are what you eat” now takes on another meaning in this world of carnivores, herbivores, fat free fanatics, raw food, and junk food junkies. In today’s world, we are fascinated with the latest diets celebrities are following and with what other people are eating. Commercial advertisements and reality TV often showcase people with these crazy food cravings and uncontrollable obsessions. It is like our new entertainment. Meanwhile, there’s diet propaganda that encourages young women to ‘starve’ themselves while others promote endless amount of pizza and beer. As a species, the human race is getting fatter. Obesity rates have increased by 214% since between 1950 and 2000. Yet there are daily dieting ads, diet books in every bookstore, dieting tips...

People Should Be Held Accountable In Real Life

...5, 4, 3, 2, 1, DEATH HAS OCCURRED SOMEWHERE AROUND THE WORLD because someone decided to risk their life going and doing something when they know about the dangers that could happen along the way or at the specified location. Whether it is because of a dare, a bet, or just because a person thinks they’re stronger than the forces of life and death, someone is dying every 5 minutes, every 30 minutes, every 1 hour because of a bad choice that a person or group of people make(this is probably why the news will live on forever ha-ha, but jokes aside). Because of this brings up the statement of whether people in life-or-death situations should be held accountable for their actions and to this I say yes; people should as opposed to others being on the side of no, people should not be held accountable for their actions in a life-or-death situation. To start off with, to support my claim stating, should people in life-or-death situations be held accountable, there are three main reasons why I think people should be held accountable. The 1st reason is failure to listen to reason which usually causes many problems in the future to occur. In real life, in a movie, or in a story, there is always someone or something that foretells the reader to let them know that danger could be near. A movie or story is never gonna add danger to the plot unless there is something that shows/tells why the danger is there in the first place. A piece of evidence from the story, “ To Build a Fire” is when the...

...resolution to begin a strict diet to lose weight and be healthier. Every year, many of those same people chose a one-size-fits-all fad diet and flunk out with in just a few short months, with some calling it quits within weeks. The truth is there is no such thing as the perfect diet for all consumers, yet we still follow the media, celebrities, and coworkers down the road of the most popular fad diet that promises the quickest gains. In the end we spend billions of dollars on these diets and all the accessories that come with them, such as expensive gym memberships and hyped up supplements, and the results are minimal at best. Dieting in America has become a mainstream, profit generating habit that can be unhealthy and costly; educating the public on alternative eating habits and supplemental lifestyle choices can lead to healthier individuals and outweigh the marginal benefits of dieting alone.   American’s are competitive by nature, and never want to be left behind. Mainstream dieting has been around for decades, growing more and more popular as our ways to reach out to more consumers grow. I can remember being a child, listening to my mother and aunts discuss New Year’s resolutions that always included dieting. Back then we only had the evening news, newspapers, and telephones. Today we cannot escape the onslaught of social media, and one would be lucky to maneuver the checkout line at CVS without picking up a magazine listing the hottest diet, offered by the hottest model...

This cheese is a cream cheese brand. In 2003, this company had strong sales in the United States because of its association with the South Beach Diet. (Kellogg School of Management, 2012, pg 1) The South Beach Diet was a popular low carbohydrate diet for losing weight. However, as the craze for the low carbohydrate diet diminished so did the sales for The Laughing Cow brand? Ann Legan, the marketing director of Bel Brand USA called a meeting and discussed and debated with her team whether the product’s position needed to be changed? (Kellogg School of Management, 2012, pg 1)They debated if the brand should give up its healthy-snack position in the United States in favor of the family-focused positioning globally. She discussed three alternatives in the meeting. The first position was more consistent with the Europeans. The cheese would be positioned in a way to stress family values and meet children’s needs. The second position is to spring off the South Beach Diet and focus on the healthy aspect of the product as a low calorie nutritional snack. The third option is to choose a new position all together. The brand would have its own identity in the United States and will distance itself from the European values and even the emphasis of the brands great taste. (Kellogg School of Management,...

How Can Diets Work in Order to Obtain Ultimate Health?

... 2013 How can diets work in order to obtain ultimate health? While researching books and articles about nutrition and diets, I found something very interesting that almost all the authors had in common. 95 percent of the authors of the books and articles I researched were obese at certain point of their lives and had tried many types of modern diets such as Atkins, South Beach, Ornish, Zone, the blood type diet, detoxing, the cookie diet-I and etc… without any long term good results. “Every year we are offered new diets, new books on dieting, and new weight-loss programs” (Katharine 1). So, I started researching about vary types of diets, how they function, how they are designed, and if it really fits all people. I researched about genetics, because I wanted to know if it has anything to deal with our health and if it has any influence in our gain of weight. I’ve noticed that when a mother and a father are obese usually the kids also tend to become obese. “Many Americans, including health care professionals and citizens alike, continue to gaze in the wrong direction” (Katherine 2). My goal with this paper is to find what would be the ideal diet and how we could live in a healthy lifestyle and never gain all the weight back! To reach this goal I have organized this paper in three main sections. In the first section, I provide an account of information about our genetics and how we can use that information in order to understand better human body and diets. In the second section...

The Various Effects of a Vegetarian Diet

...The Various Effects of a Vegetarian Diet Article One Summary The first article asks two questions “Are vegetarian students more at risk for developing an eating disorder” and “What are first-year college students’ self-identified reasons for adopting a vegetarian lifestyle?” To find the answer to this question Trautmann (2008) set up a correlational study. The subjects included 330 vegetarians versus non-vegetarian first year college students. The subjects made up a convenience sample. The design was correlational and included findings of qualitative data. The independent variables in this study were the vegetarian and non-vegetarian students. The dependent variables were the mean DEBQ and EAT-26 scores. According to the mean DEBQ score there was an increase in the amount of dieting among vegetarians. These findings lead Trautmann (2008) to confirm “that a vegetarian lifestyle among first-year college students may be related to disordered eating behaviors” (p. 3). Assess This research article had some limitations. To start, the study was a convenience sample of first year students from one university. The subjects were also pulled from a very general class which may not truly represent the whole student body at this particular university. The study would have been better if it were executed in a randomized way. This study also uses a broad definition of vegetarianism and some subjects even considered themselves to be semi-vegetarians. Though...

The Skinny on Fad Diets

...The Skinny on Fad Diets Jessica Johnson DeVry University FAD DIETS You had to stay over at work, pick up the kids, taking them to their various activities, running through the drive through for a quick meal, and begin to unwind on the couch. You could have gone for a walk on your lunch break, hit the gym after work, and made a well-balanced meal for all to eat at the dinner table but with deadlines, a demanding job, and a family to raise with an even crazier schedule; by the end of the day you are beat. However, those extra thirty pounds are just sitting there, waiting to be shed. One day, a thought occurs to seek out a solution, naturally this leads to the internet. Sites with stories of “I lost 20 pounds in the first 2 weeks on diet ABC.” or “Diet XYZ gave me energy to accomplish everything I wanted in the day, while becoming and looking like the person that I want to be.” In other words, the search has brought up results on fad diets. As the schedules of Americans become more and more jam packed, the rate of becoming an unhealthy adult is rising. Currently 69% of Americans are overweight or obese (Jadhav, 2010). Analysis of Accidental Death in Healthcare

...Analysis of Accidental Deaths in Healthcare Human factors related to death of 73 year old man: At first glance, it is very easy to attribute the switching of the man’s oxygen and suction tubes to human error by the nurse. However, it is also important to look at the factors that led up to that moment. Was she tired because of being overworked? Has she received the proper training? Was she aware of all the protocols that needed to be followed? Most of these can be attributed to organizational factors such as overstaffing or lack of proper education. The fact that this issue was, as far as we know, an isolated incident, human error appears to be the more likely candidate. If the error was related to organizational factors or systems complexity, there would likely be other occurrences. Systems complexity factors related to death of 73 year old man: The systems complexity factors related to the death of the 73 year old man are not as apparent as the human and organizational factors. A possible systems error was the lack of differentiation between the oxygen and suction tubes. The hospital knew the importance of ensuring that nurses identify the tubes correctly because they required two nurses to check them. Knowing this, they could have implemented a system to better identify the tubes before the incident rather than after. Another systems factor is the process of reporting these incidents. Two of the violations Tucson Medical Center was cited for by CMS were “failure to promptly...

Comparing Two Well-Known Diets

...There are many different well-known diets that people turn to, to try and lose weight. At first these well-known diets may seem to work however; their success can be short lived. There is a good amount of these popular well-known diets. The biggest loser diet and the 4-hour body are two well-known diets. The biggest loser diet claims that an individual who goes on this diet will lose weight, gain health, and taking control of their life using portion control, lowering energy intake progressively, and following a customized food pyramid. This diet does have a couple of strong points that could be pointed out; it really stresses the importance of physical activity, as well as promotes drinking lots of water and selecting low-fat foods. Although these are both great strong points there are some negative effects that could take place on an individual’s body. This diet can lead to nutrient deficiency. It does this because the recommended energy intake for this diet is below the recommended minimum of 1200 kcalories a day. To have a healthy diet plan the adequacy of nutrition should be a priority. It is difficult to achieve a healthy amount of nutrients when consuming less than 1200 kcalories a day. Taking in less than 1200 also sets up for failure on...
