Many people have noticed that students have different learning styles. Some people listen attentively to a lecture, while others appear to zone out Some learners will be enthralled with a visual Power Point Presentation, while others are busy righting notes. Still others want to practice the skill , using their own hand. Then there is always the student who can't sit still. These are the four basic learning styles: Verbal, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic Some experts group tactile and kinesthetic learners together while others don't.

Visual Learner
A visual learned needs to see information. These students get bored with lectures. They are the students who love to look at the visuals in their textbooks. Visual learners prefer their learning material to be in pictures, graphs and charts. The visual learner does well with movies, Power Points with lots of pictures and charts, and maps. They are more apt to think in pictures. They like to make their reading assignments visual, with notes, sticky notes, and margin notes.
Auditory Learner
The auditory learner is the student who likes to listen to lectures. They will remember what they hear over what they see. These students do well in group discussions, and like to work in groups. The auditory learner will often read out loud, as they need to hear the words they are reading. These are the students who like to record their lectures and listen to them later.

Tactile Learner
A student who is always touching things is a tactile learner. These are the learners who need to practice what they learn. Learning for this type has to be tangible. These were the students in lab class that always touched items before instructions were given. They just have to touch what they are learning. It is difficult to transfer some subjects into tactile lessons, but a tactile learner need to be active with his learning.

Kinesthetic Learner
For a teacher, these students are sometimes frustrating. In the middle of a lecture or directions, these students will be walking around the classroom. These types of learners learn by moving. Some classrooms are installing stand up desks. A kinesthetic learner will remember better when being taught learning. Also, letting a kinesthetic learner move while he learns is best. A teacher might give this learner a reading assignment and let him walk down the aisle and back to his desk while reading.
By knowing how your student, child or you yourself learns can help you become a better learner and student. There are on line quizzes that will tell you which type of learner you are. Once you know your learning style, you can find out what tips work best for your style.

I utilized these two test to aid in fortifying my strengths and recognizing and building on my weakness. The Ethical Lens Inventory (ELI) determined my preferred lens as Rights and Responsibilities and my Core Values as Autonomy and Rationality/Sensibility. Combined these results state the truth of the range of my moral capacity. ELI summarizes my definition of ethical behavior as one who fulfills their duties as an individual and responsible adult who makes responsible choices that benefit the community. I am an individual first and part of the community second, but in all things I seek truth, justice, fairness, and equality. The Your Gift section of the Inventory best describes my view of what everybody should bring to any situation, Self-Knowledge and Free Will. ...Analysis Of The Relationships Between Business Students’ Learning Styles And Effectiveness of Web Based Instruction. Based upon the journalist research of web based learning environment and different learning styles; it seems that web based learning environment is an excellent medium for enhancing learning, due to its ability to adjust to individual student learning styles and preferences. The article investigates the impact of students learning style and their performance. Online degrees have increased since 2006. More learners are becoming more technologically savvy, and it is those learners that are technologically inept who relies on instructional design from classroom settings and interaction with instructors and peers. The investigation leads to the assessment and learning style on student achievement in a Web based learning environment. Web based instruction is not for all learners, all learners do not possess the ability to learn through web based instruction and may not have the technology abilities to succeed. If all learners had these abilities, web based learning styles would increase. Web based instructional design modules are not conclusive to certain learning styles. However, considering the learners characteristic and if they are able to grasp the material on the web based instructional modules, determines if the learner would be a good fit for web based instruction. Learners should consider their learning style, motivational level, ability to interact with the...

Vark Analysis Paper

...VARK Analysis Paper Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V January 20, 2013 VARK Analysis Paper According to the VARK Questionnaire, kinesthetic is the type of learning style that is the strongest. There is a big difference in the scoring, where the highest score was kinesthetic at an 11 and the lowest score of 4 went to aural. Visual and read/write scored about the same where visual is a 5 and read/write is at a 6. Taking the VARK questionnaire has been able to bring to light a lot of issues and insecurities about preparing for assignments and exams. Knowing which learning style a person is and understanding the proper strategies for learning can help increase the knowledge base for that person. The learning style that has proven best for this student is more of a hands-on approach of the material that is being taught. It is similar to jumping into the deep end of the pool when first starting to learn how to swim. The online program has had better success with this method compared to a lecture and exam setting. Seeing the whole picture first and then breaking down the steps that build up to the final product helps understand and retain the information. This is similar to a study performed to see the optimal learning environment of students in the healthcare field. Kim A. Noble conducted a study and found that “nursing students were classified as more field-dependent than students in other health-related disciplines” (2008, pg 245). Which makes it a little hard...

...Learning is a process by which someone receives, retain and reproduce information when necessary. It is important to tailor the study habits discretely for effective learning.(UBC-the learning process) VARK assessment gives the learner an insight into their learning style which gives them an opportunity to adapt different strategies to enhance their learning. The learning modalities included in this analysis are visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic. A combination of more than one style is referred as multimodal. The learning style preference identified for the author using VARK was multimodal with two strong preferences on aural and kinesthetic with a score of 11 each. The read/write mode was also included with a score of 7.The advantage of Multimodal learners are that they uses information from different sources which enable them to understand a concept deeply. The more different ways someone learn, the more they understand and remember a concept. The learner on this mode can match or combine the learning with other people they are working with even if the group members have other learning styles. This will smoothen the learning process and enhance communication among the group members. They can also use single preference mode according to the learning situation. This versatility helps them to see things from different perspectives. On the other hand the multimodal learners have the disadvantage of being slow in taking decision as they are careful in gathering information...

...VARK Analysis: How I Learn Best Grand Canyon University: NRS- 429V December 8, 2013 VARK Analysis: How I Learn Best The VARK Questionnaire is an assessment compiled by Fleming and Miles (1992) that analyzes different styles of learning and enables students to adapt to their learning preferences. There are four different styles that are addressed at the end of the questionnaire including: visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic learning. The test subject is scored at the end of the questionnaire based on their answers to various questions. “VARK focuses on the sensory modality dimension of learning, or the way that information is taken in and processed by a learner” (Sinclaire, 2012, p. 79). After completing the assessment the student is able to analyze their identified learning style, and reflect on ways to alter their study habits accordingly. Summary of the Student’s Learning Style After the student completed the questionnaire she scored highest in the kinesthetic learning style. The kinesthetic learning style reflects on the learner’s ability to experience and utilize knowledge through the application of the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. The learner dives into the physical aspects of the subject, actually touching the parts, not relying on diagrams alone to explain how it works. This is the “hands-on learner” who learns better when movement is integrated, and they “need to do things to be able to understand” (Fleming, 2013). Kinesthetic...

A Review of Multmodal Learning Styles

...A Review of Multimodal Learning Style and Strategies The multimodal learning style is highly adaptive and is the most common type of learning style. It can encompass a strong preference two or more of the styles, or an equal preference for all of the 4 learning styles: aural, visual, read/write and kinesthetic. According to Fleming, students who prefer the multimodal learning style tend to fall into two categories: the context specific approach and the whole-sense approach. (Fleming, 2011, para.2). These two approaches are not strictly delineated; there are often some transitional areas between each style. In the context specific approach, the student will choose one of the four learning style that best suits the immediate situation, or context of the situation. Learning is done concentrating on one style in their group of preferred styles that fit the situation best. Problems arise when the style chosen is the incorrect. The student using the context specific approach needs to be aware of which mode they are using to be able to switch to the appropriate mode when having difficulty in understanding material. In the whole sense approach, the student combines multiple learning styles to fit the need of the situation. They use many routes to ensure the learning is completely understood and retained. This can cause some problems as using the multiple styles can lengthen the time it takes for the multimodal learner to feel sure they have learned the subject and if material is...

The Learning, Teaching and Assessment Experience

...The learning, teaching and assessment experience This assignment is a written account of a learning, teaching and assessment experience within a clinical setting. It considers how the mentorship of a student can be influenced by the learning experience. It also discusses the learning, teaching and mentorship theories and considers the principles of an assessment. It will look at the reliability, validity and different factors that may influence the learner’s needs. It will reflect on the responsibilities and boundaries of the mentor and discuss the legal, ethical and professional accountability. The clinical setting as a learning environment will be analysed and the effectiveness of the roles and responsibilities of a mentor will be discussed. Finally, the importance of effective teamwork within a clinical setting environment will be examined. To comply with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2008) all confidential information will be withheld and names changed. According to the NMC (2006) students on an NMC approved pre-registration nursing course must be supported and assessed by a mentor. The mentor must be registered on a local register and must demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competences on an ongoing basis. As a qualified nurse the NMC (2008) also states “you must facilitate students and others to develop their competences”. Student nurses in their final year of study are allocated placements within the community setting every six months. Most students...

R/W Style

...Reading and Writing Learning Style Stephanie M. Clapper SLS 1105-104 May 25, 2012 Edna Murugan And Dave Anderson (Team A Leader) Reading and Writing Learning Style There are different learning styles for every person. Everyone has some kind of way to make themselves learn what that style is as well. The learning style that we know best is what will help us get through our studies. The learning style can help us get the grade we deserve. The learning style we will be talking about is the reading and writing style. The reading and writing style is the way a learner learns through reading a book, or material then writing what they have learned [ (O'Neal, 2010) ]. In other words reader/writers learn best in the written language. Reader/writer learners like when the teacher or instructor use the dry erase or black board because they can understand what the instructor is teaching them and this form helps them become better studiers and students in class and out of class. Flash cards are another good way for a reader/writer learner to recall what they have learned because they can write the information on the cards and then read them and recite them for their studies. Reader/writers love to collect book and have a huge library for enrichment (O’Neal, 2010). Reader/Writers are good with grocery list and poetry and they do not need to change to some other way because they are good at writing and reading...

Vark Learning Styles

...VARK Learning Styles Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V School can be a difficult time for many. There is a lot of information to learn, and it seems impossible to retain. A man by the name of Neil Fleming noticed these difficulties, and in 1998 he established the VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/write, Kinesthetic) learning style assessment to help an individual discover how they learn the best. He based this assessment on three principles: everyone is capable of learning, but how they do it depends on the person; when a person is made aware of their individual learning style, it will increase their motivation for learning; and concepts are best learned using different perceptions (Bahadori, Tofighi, Mamikhani, Nejati, 2011.) Using the VARK results, one will be able to evaluate their learning style and tailor their study strategies to maximize the results. Studies have shown that most people prefer multi-modal (more than one learning style) learning over just utilizing one learning style (Bahadori, Tofighi, Mamikhani, Nejati, 2011.) One who is multi-modal is viewed as being “context-specific”: they look at the information in front of them and are able to adapt their learning style to fit (Fleming, 2010.) A benefit to being a multi-modal learner is that by using multiple learning strategies it helps to reinforce the information. If a learner finds they score high in aural, they learn best by hearing. An aural learner will benefit from listening to lectures, watching tapes...

Applying Ethical Framework in Practice

...Running Head: VARK Learning Style Assessment VARK Learning Style Assessment Joby Reji Grand Canyon University Family Health Promotion NRS-429V Dawn,Peter November19, 2011 VARK Learning Style Assessment Learning styles are different methods of learning. Each individual has his/her own way of learning . Identifying a learning style would help an individual to focus on his strong points and pay more attention on weak points. People with learning disabilities or attention deficit disorder would benefit from these learning styles. In 1987 Neil Fleming invented VARK Questionnaire which help users to identify learning preferences. These preferences are about the ways that they want to take in and give out information (VARK, 2011).VARK questionnaires are very helpful for some learners, which enable them to change their study habits, some learners already know about their way of learning, questionnaire or inventory does not make any difference in their study habits. VARK questionnaire can be found online or on paper, gives an option of more than one answer for a question. VARK questionnaire is short with 13-16 questions to prevent students survey fatigue (Fleming and Baume,2006).VARK questionnaire is not a distinctive measure, but it gives a method of thinking about how to prioritize the learning strategy. VARK consist of 5 strategies- visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic and multimodal. In visual study strategy...

...the most of their learning experience it is important for them to be aware of their preferred learning style. A great tool used in determining learning style preferences is the VARK (visual, audio, read/write, kinesthetic) questionnaire. The VARK learning style assessment was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987. The questionnaire consists of 16 questions with multiple answer options. Respondents are allowed to skip a question or pick multiple answer choices if necessary (Barman, Jaafar, & Rahim, 2009). Those taking the questionnaire find the questions easy to relate to since they are based on real life situations (Rogers, 2009). Once the questionnaire is completed a score will be provided along with the corresponding learning preference and identified learning strategies. It is necessary for students to be aware of their learning style preference and to know the best way to study in order to reach their full learning potential. This paper will discuss the VARK questionnaire results of the author of this paper. After completing the VARK questionnaire, results for this author showed a multimodal learning preference. Those falling into this category have no defined preference. According to the VARK website, “If you have multiple preferences you are in the majority, as approximately 60% of any population fits that category” (http://www.vark-learn.com). This author finds using different combinations of the VARK modes to be most effective when learning and presenting material...

Communications

...Collaboration (among different learning styles) Intrapersonal, Verbal-Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical The Intrapersonal learner is introspective; they are self-aware and fully understands how they relate to others. The Verbal-Linguistic learner can freely communicate through language and has the ability to teach others. The Logical-Mathematical learner uses reasoning, both deductive and inductive to absorb material. They can easily discern relationships and connections. Collaboration between these learning styles seems simplistic enough. Identification of style is first and foremost, and then collaboration can be effective and free flowing. The Intrapersonal learner will be the lead collaborator…understanding how they relate to others, they will be able to serve as facilitator of the group, establishing relationships with both the Verbal-Linguistic and the Logical Mathematician. The Logical-Mathematical learner will be the one to formulate relationships and connections within the material and The Verbal-Linguistic will be the one to ensure that the group understands the finished product of the collaboration, whether it be studying for a test or a team project. Communication & Collaboration (among different personality types) The Thinker, The Organizer and The Giver Each of these learning styles, though distinct, is, in fact complementary. The Thinker requires time to reflect upon and digest new information; this learning style will require time to work independently...

...1 A User’s Guide to Learning Styles and Math Tools T he journey of developing this book began almost five years ago. After over sixty combined years of service in schools, two of us—John R. Brunsting and Terry Walsh—were coming to the end of our careers as mathematics instructors and administrators. For most of those sixty years, we had the pleasure of working together in Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, Illinois, where we met Harvey Silver and were introduced to the Thoughtful Classroom professional development model he designed with Richard Strong. What we quickly came to learn is that the Thoughtful Classroom really works. Whenever we implemented Thoughtful Classroom strategies in our classrooms or worked with other teachers to help them implement Thoughtful Classroom strategies in their own classrooms, the effect on student learning was palpable—students became more engaged, discussions got richer, student thinking went deeper, and test scores went up. There was, however, one particular Thoughtful Classroom text that always seemed to make the biggest difference in classrooms in the shortest amount of time. That text was Tools for Promoting Active, In-Depth Learning (Silver, Strong, & Perini, 2001; Silver, Strong, & Commander, 1998). The idea behind Tools for Promoting Active, InDepth Learning is simple. It is a collection of classroom-tested tools, or simple teaching “moves,” that teachers can use to foster active, in-depth learning. These tools are based on the...
