Differences between parental involvement and parental counselling
Parental involvement can be described as having an awareness of and involvement in a child’s schoolwork and a commitment to consistent communication with educators about a child’s progress at school (Epstein 2005:77-96). It involves an understanding of the interactions between parenting skills and a child’s success in school. Parental involvement is important to the educational success of a young child and generally declines when a child enters the higher grades.

According to Epstein (2005: 77-96) the benefits of parental involvement include:
• Parental involvement leads to improved educational performance of children
• Parental involvement foster better behaviour in classrooms
• Parents who participate in decision making experience greater feelings of ownership and are more committed to supporting the schools mission
• Parental involvement improves school attendance
• Parental involvement creates better understanding of roles and responsibilities between parents, educators and children
• Parental involvement improves the child’s emotional well-being

In contrast to parental involvement, parental counselling can be described as individual counselling designed to support and educate parents through their child’s recovery process (Shoeman 2009:105). Parental counselling is a service offered to parents who are looking for some guidance on issues pertaining to their child or adolescent.

Unlike parental involvement, parental counselling does not decline when the child reaches higher school grades but is rather a continuous and life-long process.
According to Epstein (2005:77-96) the benefits of parental counselling differ from the benefits of parental involvement (discussed above), in that parental counselling helps parents:
• Understand why their child may be experiencing learning problems
• Develop strategies or interventions that will empower them as parents
• Develop better relationships with their children
• Assist their child with the challenges of growing up
• Offers parents new ways of understanding themselves as parents
• Parenting strategies to help their children manage their troubles.

The demographic questionnaire was used to collect respondents’ bio-data while their promotion examination results were used as a measure of academic performance. Three hypotheses were raised and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Analysis of Variance and t-test Analysis were used to analyse the data. The results showed that family type significantly influenced academic performance of secondary school students. On the bases of the findings, it is suggested that parents should be given adequate training on how best they can assist their children to attain maximum success irrespective of their family type. This study adopted a survey research design. Three hundred and sixty-eight students from four secondary schools were randomly selected, 128 or 47.8% were males and 148 or 53% were females. Their ages range from 16-19years with the mean of 18.24years. Only 186 or 69% have had sexual intercourse and 94 of them had only one sex partner while 92 had more than one sex partner. Two research instruments were developed for this study-Attitude towards Pre marital Sex Scale (ATPSS) and Parent Involvement Questionnaire (PIQ). The findings revealed a significant effect of home type in prediction of adolescents’ involvement in premarital sex at r=.569, r2 =.347, f (1,218) = 56.47 and <.05 significant level. There was a significant difference significant difference in involvement in premarital sex between adolescents from single parent and intact homes at X2-observed=22.46, 1degree of freedom and p <0.05. In this review evidence of the negative impacts substance misuse may have upon families are examined, following which family-focused interventions are reviewed. Several family-focused interventions have been developed. They can be broadly grouped into three types: (1) working with family members to promote the entry and engagement of substance misusers into treatment; (2) joint involvement of family members and substance misusing relatives in the treatment of the latter; and (3) interventions responding to the needs of the family members in their own right. The evidence base for each of the three types is reviewed. Despite methodological weaknesses in this area, a number of conclusions can be advanced that support wider use of family focused interventions in routine practice. Future research needs to focus on (1) pragmatic trials that are more representative of routine clinical settings; (2) cost-effectiveness analyses, in terms of treatment costs and the impact of interventions on costs to society; (3) explore treatment process; and (4) make use of qualitative methods.
