Different Lives

My life verses the life of Wahls I found it very difficult to compare and contrast the outcomes of being raised by my parents with those of Wahls. Unlike Wahls, I was raised by my mother and father, two parents of a very strong Christian faith. I was brought up in the church all my life, so the Bible to me is not only considered a guide but a way of life. The Bible doesn’t speak on homosexuality very often when it does, it condemns it as sin. Wahls mentions that, sexuality of his parents was rejected by the Christian faith in which they were both raised. This led them to embrace the more accepting teachings of Unitarian Universalism. This teaching is what they instilled in Wahls, which is why he considers himself a Unitarian Universalist. This is something my Christian faith would not allow me to be, because the teachings of a Christian are much more strict then those of a Unitarian Universalist. In my opinion there are more differences than similarities when comparing my life to Wahl’s life. We were both raised by parents of different sexualities. Wahl’s was raised as a Unitarian Universalist, but I was raised as a Christian. I was privileged to have both my parent’s teach me how to take care of myself. Wahl’s learned how to shave from his best friend’s dad. And he learned how to tie a tie from an article in Playboy. Although I strongly stick to my Christian beliefs, I would never discriminate against anyone for being different.

The Gray Zone

...ships inside the Lager. In describing the gray zone, Levi discusses the different roles of prisoners assigned by the Nazi. The prisoners that did the work were seen as being more privileged which at the end of the day helped them get more food and live better. Therefore, the concept of the gray zone is analyzing the difference between the privileged and the non-privileged in the Lager. The difference can be seen by the tasks that the prisoners carried out, for example, one of the groups were seen as, “Low ranking functionaries... sweepers, kettle washers, night watchmen, bed smoothers... checkers of lice and scabies, messengers, interpreters, assistants’ assistants. In general, these people poor devils like ourselves, who worked full time like everyone else but who for an extra half liter of soup were willing to carry out these and other ‘tertiary’ functions.” This group was seen as harmless and not much different than the underprivileged. The other group of prisoners in the Lager was seen as the enemies to their own people. They were referred to as the Kapos who were “free to commit the worst atrocities on their subject as punishment for any transgressions, or even without any motive whatsoever: until the end of 1943 it was not unusual for a prisoner to be beaten to death by a Kapo without the latter having to fear any sanctions.” The prisoners that became part of the Kapo were seen as permanent. They were not accepted back by their people if they were willing to......

...issues, involving my country into sad and hard situations, destroying our culture, education and economy, forcing and scaring the people who decided to trust into a different opinion against the government, those ones will be recognized as “Traitors” and “Enemies of the nation” at least that was the way they used to call them. The visual arts means to me as a way to escape from reality and open our minds to others, to make them understand that there’s a another world outside complete different as the one who we live in now. At the age of seven, my father took me into a Father-son trip to the beach, where he gave me my first camera, an Instant water proof Kodak, one of the most beautiful gifts that i’m still appreciating from hem. Since then I have been feeling a passion for the Films and Photography a passion who becomes an intuitive path that guides me through life. For me films are about romance, adventures, tears, laughs and smiles, more than recording with a video camera, doing a film involves feelings, inspiration, originality, pushing the boundaries and making us to be able to distinguish ourselves from one another. Every mind is a different world, this life is a gift, no matter how pain full it seems to be, we need to be ready to take a risk, to grow and recognized that everyone has reason to live. I’m taking now the risk, I’m growing up and I’m recognizing my reason to...

Love Orange

...the dead as a part of her life, she accept it, because there is only a defined amount of love to one person with she describes as a love - orange. Although the death takes a lot of people around her, she sees the funeral as a vacation, a time to come out of the house and a break from her own world. She is smart but childish at the same time, that can only mean that she is older than 10 years, I would say that she where a teenager, because her grandparents where still alive. The girl, that we do not know the name of, often hides under the bed when strangers come by her grand parents house, where she lives. Every time strangers come by, she would say these words to her dog: “A world outside” (P 1 L 8), the dog is a bit redundant in the text, but still an object that is used to support the fact that she is a bit more like other people. She is different, and she thinks she lives in a ‘inside’ world, that is one of the reasons why her grandmother dressed her all white to the neighbours funeral, the other reason why she is dressed all white, is the fact that, she sees the place people come to in the second life, is a place filled with butterflies, sunlight and sweetness. As a symbol, white is the opposite of black that often is a symbol for evil. White is a colour associated with innocence, perfection, and as an angel. When she sees her...

...differences between my sister and me that you could never imagine. We are just so different that if we did not have the same blood, I would think that we were not sisters. We are the total opposite of each other. We are not just different physically; we are also different in personality. We think differently. We have different types of hobbies. We enjoy different things. In other words, we are just two different types of person that apparently do not have anything in common. My sister name is Aracely. She is younger than me by four years. She is white and tall. She is the kind of person that is always in a bad mood. She gets mad really fast and sometimes for nothing. It is lie she is happy being mad. I don’t know why she is like that; to me she is just weird. My sister is the girl that always wants to be alone. She doesn’t care for going out or making plans for the weekend with her friends. She prefers to be in our room alone without being bothered. I am the opposite from her. I am older than her but I actually look younger than her. Physically I’m morena, and short. I am the kind of person that is always happy and laughing about everything. I do not like to be alone; I am not used to it. I’m the kind of person that always wants to go out on the weekends; I’m always making plans for going out, I just can’t survive being at my house a whole weekend without going out. ...your good side but also your flaws and imperfection. To have a true friend is rare achievement now a days. Now, if you have one then you’re a lucky person. And I guess, I’m one of them. In my case, my bestfriend is my own cousin. She is, in a way, similar to me but also different at the same time. To start with, we are alike in the sense that we talk a lot about things that none of our friends are interested in, like instagram, blogs and youtubes. But somehow different when it comes to the types, she wants a colorful instagram feed and blog while i prefer black and white. Dressing up is both our hobby. Although, I was never into leggings and pants like my her but instead I wear shorts and dresses. Another reason is, both of us are single for we are now scared to get our hearts tore into pieces again, just like what happen with our last relationship. Though, I’m still considering of having a boyfriend, i hope, in the near future unlike her who kinda became of a “man-hater” that doesn’t like boys at all. In terms of attitude, me and my bestfriend mostly had differences than similarities. We always think before we react on a certain situation or dilemma. However, when it comes to handling those, it’s a different story. I don’t know how but she always take problems lightly and positively, no matter how small or big it is while I take mine negatively. It’s very funny that we have a common talent, that is talking non-stop. I’m very realistic and sarcastic like I’m always......

Technology's Effect on Reading Skills

...Technology’s Effect on Reading Skills Things are much different from the generation in which I grew up technology-wise. We had few television shows for kids other than Saturday morning cartoons. Computers, even the PCs at home, were used for accounting programs or very early e-mail. There were very few games for kids and it took those forever for them to load. There were not many game systems and none of them were portable. We also did not have the cell phones that are available now with internet access. We did not even have internet. Things have come a long way since then. Today’s kids have access to cell phones, iPods, tablets, laptops, and a lot more options available to them. Modern technology has had both a positive and a negative impact on the current generation's ability to improve their reading skills. Kids growing up in 2015 are growing up in a different world. Life has a much faster pace in this era of technology. People can get things on demand and immediately. Kids in school have a harder time paying attention for long periods of time. This makes sitting still and paying attention to a teacher’s lecture difficult. It also makes getting past a possible slow part of a book or passage tough. Most of their electronics come with many different options and if they don’t like whatever is on they can change it. This makes teaching students what is needed for them to pass the standardized test very difficult. Another issue students have is lowered comprehension.......

...described. To properly assess these different factors and events we have decided to develop a multi-causal analysis: * Company structure and organizational culture events – Introducing change and its consequences * Technical complexity and technical risk * Rapport and follow-up strategy events – Superior-subordinate relationship, feedback and interpersonal conflict * Priorities and workflow coordination events Structure and culture: Manufacturing vs. Design We can identify strong evidence that there is a deep lack of understanding of the culture of manufacturing by the design unit and vice-versa. This factor is perfectly clear when the manufacturing engineers’ complain about the working procedures of the design unit, as quoted “They can’t work the production problems from an office… each week we had to spend time trying to convince them that we knew what we were doing”. Such lack of understanding might contribute to inefficient communication between the two teams, affecting the execution of the project. The manufacture part of the project requires the active contribution of engineers from both units. It is, therefore, essential that those two teams work closely together in order to proceed with the project. Notwithstanding, several problems arose, as illustrated in the statements presented before. We will discuss further how and why this lack of understanding could have been originated. Cooperation among different cultures and......

Apple Thnik Different

...In this paper, I will be analyzing one the most successful campaigns in the history of advertising. In August ’97, Steve Jobs who had co-founded Apple Computers returned to the Company once again as its chief executive officer. Those were the times Apple was amidst crisis. Among many things that he addressed, the most important was to redefine Apple’s image in the global market. People were not ready to buy computers from a company who might not last a year. Jobs needed to change this image. Therefore the “Think Different” campaign was an attempt to change to consumer’s perspective for the company. With the “Think Different” campaign, the writers wanted to remind both their consumers and their staff, how Apple thinks differently, using rhetorical appeals of logos, ethos and pathos. It also symbolized the return of the genius that was removed from the company. Apple had lost the “creative” touch during his absence therefore it was very essential for him to create a campaign that would remind the consumers what Apple brand was all about. Through the campaign they hoped to gain their cool, hip image back. The writers used reasoning (logos), rhetorical appeal to stimulate audience’s common sense, beliefs and values by honoring revolutionary heroes and rationalizing that creative thinking produces positive change. The writer used pre-existing simple facts that drew conclusions in their favor. The visual elements included a set of historical influential people......

Untold Story of Emmett Till

...Final Report Amanda Haskin, Jiao Liang, Boyu Dang, Joseph Krantz, Zach Tranter 1. Evaluation A. With the boat not sinking, and finishing in 11th place overall; the race went very well for us. The structure of the boat stayed strong. The walls and its supports were able to withstand the force and wetness of the pond water. Ideally this was made possible because the bottom of our boat was two cardboard pieces thick and the bottom of the entire boat was taped. Our paddles on the other hand were a different story. We created paddles in the shape of ping-pong rackets and the arm of these devices didn’t hold up so well. The cardboard became very flimsy and the arms of the rackets bent, unable to sustain the water and pressure we were exerting upon them. The main reason why our fundamental idea didn’t work out as a paddle was because the arm of the structure didn’t prove to be strong enough. B. Our water line calculations were actually very precise. Most of the attribution for this was the fact that our boat had a very simple shape, thus easy to apply in the equations. Another factor that helped us is the fact that we got an accurate Weight of the boat and the occupants that were going to be in the boat, which allowed figures on the prediction to be very similar to that of the actual outcome. Our predicted water line was at 6.5 inches, and as it turned out we hit our mark. Inaccuracies could occur most probably in misuse of the equations or...

Individual Project 2

...Individual Project 2 English 206 Laquita Easter 5/8/11 The Cosby Show was a great show for African Americans in the early 80’s. I love one particular character from the show it was “Clif Huxtable” played by comedian Bill Cosby. The show most people thought it was not “real” enough. The reason most people will think this is because of “Cosby” family life on the show. Cliff and his wife Claire Huxtable were very successful, educated people. Cliff was a doctor and his wife was a successful lawyer. The two raised 5 children who needed much guidance and advice as any children would. The show was very interesting and funny but was the joke on how the whole series was played out? I don’t believe so, that made me adore and look up to Cliff Huxtable. He was fair, down to earth, and made his fatherly love & support for his children to broaden and make them choose for themselves. Bill Cosby character was the father of all fathers; he supported his wife and watch football on Sunday nights. He was still the all American dad, in one if my favorite episodes, it was when Theo wanted to stay out later. Theo: Dad, will it be too much to ask if U stay 30 minutes after curfew? Cliff: Well, Theo if I let you stay 30 minutes after your curfew, then you may ask for an increase in your allowance, and then you’ll want to borrow the car. Theo: Okay Dad, would a “no Theo” be too much to ask? I loved that episode and even use some of Cliff’s parenting when dealing with my own children......

Diversity and Inclusion at Oberlin

...I am originally from Montclair, NJ. A place that is diverse in thinking, socioeconomically and racially. The town has a large number of very wealthy people living alongside people with average incomes. Although, I moved away when I was only 8 years old, I remember playing in my neighborhood with people whose parents were from different parts of the world and spoke in languages other than English in their homes. This was my start to realizing that people can be different and still be the same. When I moved to Shaker Heights, OH. My parents said they had chosen this town because, it was just like Montclair. The town had lots of old pretty houses with people who looked different from one another from diverse backgrounds - some poor and some rich. It was exactly what they had described to me except for one thing. The people that I met, many seemed to have similar views on politics, racial issues and life. Although they were different, they weren't really. Living in Shaker Heights, they had lost something. My parents said that people in the Midwest were nice people and that everyone was simply trying to get along. I felt like that was not right. Why should I need to give up a portion of who I am to fit in. Although everyone looked and seemed like the people back home, a bunch of them were working to fit in locally. I think a diverse community means that we should celebrate differences and find things in common, not give up those differences trying not to stand out. I am not......
