State the Problem(s) With regards to my particular student, Alex struggles to learn subjects that seem irrelevant to her. She will participate in group activities, but not wholly contribute. If called upon, she typically answers with “I don’t know.” On worksheets, she immediately attempts to find questions she can answer easily before requesting to use the bathroom. She has not turned in most of her assignments, and the ones she has turned in are never finished. She has been doing poorly on her tests, and if she continues on this route, she will likely fail. She has been struggling in her other classes as well, but she appears to engage with other students outside of class (at lunch, in the halls, etc.,) when she has the chance to talk about …show more content…
The two engaging strategies mentioned by the student with APD are both examples of differentiated instruction. Most of the research I have found regarding DI is positive, for it promotes flexibility, teacher creativity, students learning according to their specific learning style, etc. The more a lesson is tailored to fit the learning styles of students, the more engaged they will likely be (which is the goal!). However, I came across some disadvantages to this approach as well, some of which include what VisionLaunch describes as a “second full-time job for the teacher” and a lack of time (Layton). Some differentiated instruction techniques are easy to accomplish (such as those done by the art and science teachers) and require little to no extra time. Others, however, may be impossible simply due to time constraints or lack of …show more content…
Emphasizing how the subject matter is relevant to students could potentially foster their interest in it. As I mentioned before, if it was possible to incorporate/connect Alex’s love of cars to a lesson, she would likely engage in it and/or see the value in learning it. The benefits to focusing on intrinsic motivation include establishing relevance, providing choices to students (and as a result giving them some control over their education), and emphasizing the value of the subject matter, rather than the rewards or punishments associated with it as seen in extrinsic motivation. Focusing on intrinsic motivation has a better chance of encouraging the student to learn the material because they understand its value, rather than merely regurgitating facts in an effort to pass. However, enforcing this value takes time, as a teacher needs to get to know each student well before he/she is able to determine what each student finds value in. It could also be difficult if the instructor themself does not find value in the lesson, but rather is teaching it because it is simply part of the required curriculum.
