THE LIFE AND THE ATHLETE, DION SANDERS Abstract

2

Power, Money and Sex is what Dion Sanders book that what he published talks about, along with the trials and tribulations that he went through in his NFL career. Dion talks about how success almost ruined his life. In his touching, provocative, and heartwarming story, I got to meet the real Dion Sanders. Not the Hollywood image, not just an incredible athlete, but the man who discovered after arriving at the pinnacle of success that meaning and purpose lay in another direction. Ever since he went pro in 1989, Dion Sanders has been known as “PRIMETIME,” the hottest defensive back in the National Football League and base stealing sensation in Major League Baseball. He is the only athlete in history to play in both a World Series and a Super Bowl. By the age of twenty five, Dion was already at the top of his game, but he was desperate for something more. In his gripping story, Dion writes: “I tried everything. Parties, women, buying expensive jewelry and gadgets, and nothing helped. There was no peace. I was playing great, and every time I turned on the TV I could see myself on three or four commercials, but there was no peace, no joy, just emptiness inside”. Still pursuing his dreams, he cut a rap album in 1993. His song, “ MUST BE the MONEY!” hit the Top Ten charts all across the United States, and the money just kept pouring in, getting richer and richer. But despite all of his success, his life was outta control. Ten minutes after buying a brand new $275,000.00 Lamborghini sports car, he realized that he still was not happy with his life and still feeling desperately empty; searching for all the answers that he could in all the wrong places. This would be in an explanation of Dion’s story, in his own words, with all the drama, hope, glamour and surprise of his true life adventures. His up and down life and rise to fame and his attempted suicide, and shocking events that led him to his faith in God and a new vision in life. Dion

THE LIFE AND THE ATHLETE, DION SANDERS Sanders was a child hood favorite when I was growing up in high school. He also had worn my favorite number, 21. When reading the book that he wrote, it opened my eyes to a lot of life experiences.

Being Under Control

...2013 Writing Workshop Mythology “Myths are common stories at the root of our universal existence” (Seger). In the essay written by Scott Russell Sanders, "The Men We Carry in Our Minds" discusses Sander’s perspective on men in comparison to the impression that women carry in their minds. The essay, “Creating the Myth” by Linda Seger shows on how stories are based on our own life experiences. Sander’s argument about how the impressions of men or women are based on ones life experiences relates to Seger’s depiction of myths through the use of rhetorical questions and dialogue. Primarily, Sander uses rhetorical questions in order to discuss how ones life experiences illustrates stories of myths. Sander addresses about when he experienced a situation where he met women telling him men have plenty of joy and privileges. He writes, “and for the first time I met women who told me that men are guilty of having kept all the joys and privileges of the earth for themselves. I was baffled. What privileges? What joys?” (Sander 229). Sander is shocked to find out that women feel that way about men. It is an amusing statement to assume that men have certain stereotypical characteristics in society because it is not necessarily true that woman cannot do some things similar to men. Life responsibilities are equally made for everyone. Sander disagrees and pushes back to how much of a struggle men have to go through in life, equally as women. These questions enable us to think about the......

Michael Ignita

...He’s back. After two years of deliberately staying out of the limelight, working quietly in his riding and expressing his views privately to leader Michael Ignatieff, Stéphane Dion has a new bounce in his step. The former Liberal leader – who was basically ousted by the Ignatieff team in late 2008 after losing that election (but not nearly as badly as his successor lost on May 2) – is asking questions in the House of Commons and participating in debates. He even attended the NDP convention in Vancouver as an observer. More related to this story * Video: Bob Rae begins rebuilding Liberals as interim leader * Federal Liberals won’t pick new leader for full two years * Why do Liberals support Canada Post? In addition, he intervened at the beginning of the party’s so-called extraordinary convention Saturday to call for the selection of a permanent leader to be delayed for two years to give the party time to rebuild. His view won the day as Liberals decided to postpone the decision until no later than June, 2013. Mr. Dion told The Globe and Mail on Monday that when Mr. Ignatieff was leader, the media was only interested in speaking to him to find “a contradiction with Mr. Ignatieff.” When he realized that, he felt it was better “to express my views privately.” He said the only time he intervened in the Commons over the past two years was when he felt that none of his colleagues were going to jump in on an issue. Otherwise, he kept quiet – although he attended......

Personal Style of Music Paper

...Reagan Rooney English 101 09/16/2015 It has been a few years since I have listened to music just for the pure pleasure of listening to music. As I’ve been racking my brain day in and day out for the past two weeks, I figured out that I did actually used to enjoy listening to music for the following reasons: the lyrics, the vocals and the happy memories that would come rushing back when I would hear a certain song. There were many songs that I would listen to over and over again because of the lyrics in the song and the message that the song portrayed to me. Christina Aguilera’s song titled “Beautiful”, to me, really portrays an uplifting and powerful message: You are beautiful no matter what they say Words can't bring you down....oh no You are beautiful in every single way Yes, words can't bring you down, oh, no So don't you bring me down today... I think that is a really important message for everyone to know. People in this world can be really cruel and hurtful, especially to younger people who may not fit the “perfect body” profile. Another song I love simply because of the lyrics is Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day”. I believe the song’s lyrics can be really helpful to someone during a time of loss: And I know you're shining down on me from heaven Like so many friends we've lost along the way And I know eventually we'll be together One sweet day Another song that I really love just for the lyrics and the simple message that the song portrays is a song...

Following after a few second cadences Groban continues to sing another ballad “Awake”. Groban makes all the women sway their hands to the pretty grave tempo. He sings a story pleading to stay awake to avoid a broken heart as the flutes and piano softly makeup the triple composition. The song is mainly homophonic and toward the end goes into a polyphonic rondo. “Awake” ends with a pianissimo crescendo of all instruments. The band consisting of two basses, six violins, two french horns, a trumpet, two flutes, a harp, drums, a piano and two guitars helps Groban transition into “Oceano”. “Oceano” is sung in Italian and depicts an amazing abyss of love that a man attempts to hide. The mezzo forte crescendo leading to the chorus causes the forum to tremble. The piano carries strongly as the violins sing the......

The Wanderer

...Maresca had co-written Dion's previous # 1 hit, "Runaround Sue", but originally intended "The Wanderer" to be recorded by another group, Nino and the Ebbtides. They passed on it in favour of another Maresca song, so Dion was given it as the B-side of his follow-up single, "The Majestic", a song which his record company had chosen for him. The record was turned over by radio DJs who preferred "The Wanderer", which duly entered the US charts in December 1961 and rose to # 2 in early 1962. It also reached # 10 in the UK and # 1 in Australia. The song was recorded with an uncredited background vocal group, the Del-Satins, in a rockier style than Dion's earlier hits with the Belmonts. The Del-Satins were an established doo-wop group led by Stan Ziska (later known as Stan Sommers), who at the time were also contracted to Laurie Records, and who later formed the core of Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge. Musicians on the original recording included Bobby Gregg, Bucky Pizarelli and Johnny Falbo on guitars, Jerome Richardson on alto sax, Buddy Lucas on tenor sax, and Panama Francis and Sticks Evans on drums.[citation needed] Dion said of "The Wanderer":[2] At its roots, it's more than meets the eye. "The Wanderer" is black music filtered through an Italian neighborhood that comes out with an attitude. It's my perception of a lot of songs like "I'm A Man" by Bo Diddley or "Hoochie Coochie Man" by Muddy Waters. But you know, "The Wanderer" is really a sad song. A lot of guys...

I attended alone, whereas I seen others coupled there was a large turnout I would say a hundred or people attended the event. My initial reaction upon arriving was did I make the correct choice in choosing this exhibition, Augusta has so many Museums and I didn’t realize it until I started passing back them as I was headed to the Museum of History, I ask myself which cultural event do I want to attend, will this exhibition that I’m attending be interesting and full of attractions that are captivating, exciting and ideal. Throughout, my visit to the Augusta Museum of History the most rewarding experiences that I’ve gathered are quite intriguing. One of which is the exhibition of the late Mr. James brown, known as “The Godfather of Soul.” “World-renowned music star James Brown (May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006) called the Augusta-area home his entire life. ...articles. Both papers use colored ink for images and pictures and also feature photos of people that mirror human emotion. For example, the WSJ’s article “Teens Care Spurs Wider Fight” has a picture of the teen’s mother looking distraught and another article in the WSJ sports section titled “Team Canada: Officially Unstoppable” shows a hockey player with his hands up in the air and a look of celebratory victory with a huge smile on his face. In like manner, NE has numerous photos of people showing emotion. For instance, the article “Mad Mel’s Even Madder” contains a photo shot of Mel Gibson with a look of anger and appears as if he is yelling; while another article on the same page “Celine’s Cancer Stricken Husband” shows a picture of Celine Dion looking down with a wrinkled forehead and a frown on her face. Although both contain some graphic similarities, there is definitely a difference how the graphics are presented and used. Even though the headlines of both publications appear in bolder larger font than the article content, NE uses a much larger font than WSJ with the largest font measuring 2 1/2 inches in height, whereas...

Deion Sanders

...Although there is an endless list of possibilities, I chose Deion Sanders as the greatest American athlete of all time. Sanders began his college career at Florida State, playing on their football, baseball, and track teams. He became a two-time All American for football and helped the Seminoles reach the College World Series. In 1988 he won the Jim Thorpe Award for top defensive back. In 1989 he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons and began his profession football career. That same year he signed a contract with the New York Yankees. In September of 1989 Sanders hit his first homerun for the Yankees along with his first ever punt return for a score as a profession football player making him the first ever athlete to hit a homerun and score a touchdown in the same week. What a way to start your professional career as an athlete. After five seasons with the Falcons in 1994 Sanders signed one year with the San Francisco 49ers. That year Sanders set the NFL record for the most ever yards returned after an interception, with 303, a record that still stands today. He also tied the record for interceptions returned for a touchdown, with three that season. That year he was deservedly voted the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and his team won Super Bowl XXIX against the San Diego Chargers. After one season with the 49ers Sanders signed with the Dallas Cowboys during week 2 of the season, making him at the time the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, and in 1995 helped them...

...What he's doing, in 10 years from now when you mention his name, you're going to have to say, 'One of the ... ' or 'The ...' " Chargers fullback Lorenzo Neal said. The numbers alone force Tomlinson into the discussion. He eclipsed 100 touchdowns in 89 games, four games faster than Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith. He's at 104 now, in the top 15 all-time; his 93 rushing touchdowns are eighth best. If he throws two more touchdown passes, he will tie Walter Payton's record (eight) for the most thrown by a non-quarterback. Brown, Smith, Payton ... some of the ultra-elite names. Brown still has to top the list. Payton was more athletic, but I'd take Tomlinson over Smith. Barry Sanders doesn't get love from the hard-core NFL heads, but ask any defensive player who ever tried to tackle him how difficult that was. Tomlinson should be mentioned with Peyton Manning as the top candidates for the NFL most valuable player this season. And the way things are going Atlanta's 2001 draft-time decision to trade Tomlinson for Michael Vick is starting to look Bowie-over-Jordan foolish. And here's a piece of advice for those fantasy league owners lucky enough to have him: If you meet him, show a little appreciation. "They don't ever really say thank you," Tomlinson said of his encounters with fantasy players. "Most of the time, it's all about the next game, what have you done for me lately? It's always, 'LT, I need two touchdowns.' 'I need 100 yards.' " As a fan of the game, I'll say......

Sprint Resisted Training

...Sprint-Resisted Training Rashad Jefferies FIT 125-G2 Sprint-Resisted Training Training within sports is a vital part of becoming a world class athlete. Without the proper training, workouts, diet and willingness to put the time and work in, becoming a world class athlete is not likely to happen in your future. We have grown up in our lives and have had visions and dreams of becoming our favorite player. There were times when we as children would try to emulate popular sports figures Michael Jordan, Carl Lewis, Barry Sanders, the late Walter Payton and Wayne Gretzky. These sports figures that I mentioned have been named as greats in their perspective sport and they did not get there by just talent alone. As I was growing up playing football, I wanted to be just like Walter Payton. The moves that he would perform on the football field week in and week out were amazing to my eyes and wanted to be just like him. Walter Payton had the total package; he had the moves, the strength and the speed to make defenders miss or he was able to just run right through a defender or outrun anyone trying to chase him down. He was just pure poetry on the football field. I was a good sized young football player up until the age of 13 when I stopped growing. I had the strength, because of doing push-ups and lifting weights, while my moves were also great because I practiced them every week. The only problem that I had left was becoming a faster......

Pragmatism and Analytic Philosophy

...Answer the following questions in a total of 200 to 300 words: How are pragmatism and analytic philosophy uniquely American movements? What ideas make them different from the way Europeans of the same period were thinking? The pragmatism and analytic philosophy are uniquely American movements because pragmatists (C.S. Peirce, William James, and John Dewy) rejected the idea that there is such thing as fixed, meaning absolute truth. They believed that truth is relative to a time, place, purpose, and is ever changing when new data is introduced. Analytic philosophy deals with analysis of ideas that are complicated and make them easier to understand. Basically what it does is turn complicated propositions or concepts into simpler ones. Kant, Hegel, and Bertrand Russell were idealist. Kant thought that knowledge is possible if we limit our inquiries to things as they are experienceable, because the mind imposes categories on experienceable objects. Hegel expanded Kant’s knowledge, he believed that that the categories of thought are the categories of being. Bertrand Russell started having interest in philosophy was because he studied mathematics and wanted to find a satisfactory account of numbers and mathematics. He got into philosophy when he started to make irrelevant assumptions when trying do so, basically he stumbled upon it and just pursued it. What made them different from the way that Europeans of the same period were thinking, was that European philosophers took......

Book Review

...Shadae Childress 11/20/14 Book Review LDSP 395 The Metaphysical Club Beliefs, facts, and theories all play a part in our society. What we think is right and what we think is wrong can be different from somebody else’s views just because of the way they may interpret it or the way they may look at it. Religion itself directs certain individuals to a path that says that God is the reason for everything while scientists may disagree with such findings because of the facts that they have reached over time. Then you have the theories that you cannot really prove true but it does not mean that it is wrong. “The Metaphysical Club” is a book that may even cause you to question what you believe by the end of the book. It took place around the time of the Civil War and involved philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, and idealists. It describes the life of four intellectuals who share their views on how they feel about things and how they perceive the world. These individuals somehow link back to Harvard and have something in common. They all are thinkers. These fours thinkers are Charles Pierce, William James, Oliver Holmes Jr., and John Dewey. Each one of these individuals had their own exploration of ideas and shared them to one another to either agree or disagree on how to define modern American Life. They formed a club called, “The Metaphysical Club.” “The Metaphysical Club” based a lot of their discoveries and beliefs and built them into a category called pragmatism....
