The origins of traditional water puppetry are contested; the earliest reference to Water Puppetry in Vietnam was found at two inscriptions at the Long Doi Son Pagoda that describe the popular tale of The Legend of the Restored Sword. Traditional performances contained twenty to thirty scenes from a possible repertoire of one hundred and thirty four. Performances today are shorter (Foley, 2001, p. 136). As the name implies, the theatre performance is executed through puppets on a water body. The appearance and movements of the puppets are crucial to the execution of a character though puppets, hence it is vital to investigate the appearance of puppet characters when studying this theatre tradition. Secrets of the meticulous puppetry and designing techniques of Mua Rồi Nước were fiercely guarded by a small set of villagers who knew these skills. Who to walk with, who to dance with, how and when to speak to a stranger, were all very critical knowledge. For men, there were rules about bowing, hat tipping, chaperonage, where to sit and next to whom, even about the circumstances in which it was correct or not to smoke or drink in front of ladies. There was also a correct title for almost every type of profession, social standing and rank. One of the major events in upper class society was the dance. Dances were usually scheduled to correspond with the full moon. Even most great houses did not have very large ballrooms. As a consequence, most balls were held outdoors. Most dances started around eight o'clock or so and the light of the full moon allowed less lighting to have to be put up. The practice was often to have the hostess and her daughters greet guests at the front door. Floral decorations were popular in the 1850's and 60's, but by the 1890's, too much decoration was frowned upon. At the 'top' of the room, usually the area farthest away from the door, was the band. ...3.1 The essence of realia and its classification The term ‘realia’ was first used by a famous Soviet scholar A. Fedorov, who states that realia is an extralingual phenomenon [15, 48]. The definition of realia was provided later by S. Vlakhov and S. Florin as words and collocations of a language which denote objects, concepts and phenomena that are peculiar to the life (the geographical surroundings, culture, everyday realities or sociological and historical specifics) of the people of one nation, country or tribe, and alien for another, thus conveying national, local or historical colouring. As a result, they do not have exact equivalents in other languages and, therefore, need to adopt alternative approaches to their translation [11, 47]. The notion of realia was further developed and enriched in terms of the Translation Studies by prof. R. Zorivchak, who suggests the following definition of the term: realia is a mono- and polylexeme unit, whose main lexical meaning contains (in a binary opposition) the traditionally attached complex of ethno-cultural information alien to the objective reality of the target language [15, 58]. Furthermore, the scholar lays great emphasis on the fact that the concept is a relative changeable category which is distinct in the binary contrastive opposition of certain languages and cultures. ...The Oxford 3000™ The keywords of the Oxford 3000 have been carefully selected by a group of language experts and experienced teachers as the words which should receive priority in vocabulary study because of their importance and usefulness. The selection is based on three criteria. The words which occur most frequently in English are included, based on the information in the British National Corpus and the Oxford Corpus Collection. (A corpus is an electronically held collection of written or spoken texts, often consisting of hundreds of millions of words.) However, being frequent in the corpus alone is not enough for a word to qualify as a keyword: it may be that the word is used very frequently, but only in a narrowly defined area, such as newspapers or scientific articles. In order to avoid including these restricted words, we include as keywords only those words which are frequent across a range of different types of text. In other words, keywords are both frequent and used in a variety of contexts. In addition, the list includes some very important words which happen not to be used frequently, even though they are very familiar to most users of English.
