Abstract:
In the situation of XYZ computers flooding, this paper is to help create a disaster plan using different raid setups that might better help this company in the long run to back up there systems. I have gone into detail what is needed for the different raid systems and what they are good for below. The first step in making sure that you have a stable system is to make sure that you have a proper back up plan, especially when you are dealing with the amount of employees that XYZ Computers has to deal with on a day to day basis. When starting out a disaster plan, we need to take in every possible situation that could arise, from natural disasters to think such as hacker exploits and even burglar exploits. We should even cover things in our disaster plan such as hardware failures, spyware, or even virus. We also need to list them all out, and take a look at what ones we are most likely going to have to deal with, and put most of our concentration on those, and then slowly work our way down the list making sure that we hit every single possibility that could arise. Another factor that should be looked into also while making a disaster plan would be the cost that we are willing to put out to put together a strong disaster plan. We want to be able to have something that is going to work without flaws, but also not have to break the bank while doing it. We also might want to think of ways that we can help prevent most of the disasters. In example, we really can’t anticipate things such as floods, but we can help with internet security but implementing good quality firewall services, and good anti-virus software. For dealing with floods and earthquakes we might want to look into different ways that we could back up our systems hourly or daily using a possible raid system. The problem that has arisen at XYZ computers was a pipe breaking due to extensive flooding in the area. The flooding has caused damage to computers on the first floor level of the building. The first thought that I have when taking a look at XYZ computers situation was that they had put the servers on the first floor. I just don’t think any company should do this, I would say the smarter idea would be to put the servers in a secluded area that would still be accessible by the IT administrators for maintenance work, but would still be safe from things such as flooding. The other option that should have been put into would be a raid setup. There are 3 different broad ideas when it comes to RAID: reverberating, once is the replacement of data to more than one hard drive; marking, once is the disserving of date over multiple hard drives, and finally error rectification, where all the extra data is stored allowing the data to be observed and most likely determined, also known as error tolerance. The main point of raid is to help enhance the dependability of the drives, helping to safeguard the information that is very important to businesses. There are a few different types of raid setups that we can work with. I would say the best option for this company would be to use a RAID 5 setup. This type of setup requires all drives to be present while the system is up and running, but if something where to fail due to flooding or a hardware failure, you would only need to replace the failed hard drive instead of having to replace the whole entire system. Another form of raid system that would be ideal for this would be a raid 1 based system. Raid 1 is a mirroring arrangement of hard disks inside the computer. What this means is that instead of the computer writing to a single hard drive, it will write to both, or as many hard drives you have in the server computer at the same time, this way if there is ever some type of hardware failure, or computer virus failure, then you have an exact copy of the system on a secluded hard drive. This will allow you to just switch out hard drives, and keep things up and running. You could also use a RAID 0. You can use this in a stripped set, once is like a RAID 1 but with less error tolerance. Any type’s disk incapability will completely kill the system. We could also use RAID 3 or RAID 4 both striped set, this would require that we use 3 hard drives instead of 2. This type of system gives us enhanced operation and error tolerance like a RAID 5 setup, but with committed parity disk instead of having rotated parity stripes. We also have a RAID 5 setup, with a stripped set, once also uses a at least 3 hard drives, and uses a disserved parity. Disserved parity necessitates all but one drive to be able to function, but there will not have any arrays demolished by a single hard drive failure. Finally we have RAID 6 once takes at least 4 different hard drives to get up and working. IT also has an error tolerance of at least 2 hard drives, this is more practical for longer raid setups, or for a higher attainability systems.

The one big thing that you have to remember when dealing with a raid system is even thought they are ideal for things such as hardware failures, it’s just like with any other thing, since you will have to use more than one hard drive to really take advantages of a raid system, the more parts you have into a computer, truthfully, the more things could also go wrong. This is why when doing a raid system, it’s very important to take into consideration any form of error rectification that we can. This will make sure that we can keep the system up and going for as long as possible without any major disasters on the hardware side of things. Even though raid is a good way to help with things such as system crashes, it’s not a very positive idea when it comes to having a clean secure backup system. The most ideal type of backup for a system like this would be some sort of network backup, allowing for another computer on the same site to remotely keep the information, this way if for some reason there was another disaster in which something such as flooding might accrue, then another system would have all the data backed up and safe.
