Women throughout United States history have had fewer rights than men. Women were often viewed by men as inferior and weak. Women were once viewed as a gender that only should do manual labor such as house cleaning, cooking and taking care of children. Men did things that required heavy manual labor such as building a barn, plowing fields or stacking hay. For a time men also viewed women as less educated and less capable of being educated. Higher education or more formal education was not considered as important for women and almost expected for men. It was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that a large population of women began to obtain formal undergraduate degrees ("Women's History in America", 1994-1995). By the mid 1980’s women were obtaining approximately 49 percent of all undergraduate degrees, 49 percent of all master degrees and about 33 percent of all doctoral degrees. Bu 1985 it is estimated that approximately 53 percent of all college students were women. In 1890 women comprised about 5 percent of doctors in the United States of America. By the year 1980 about 17 percent of doctors in the United States were women. Throughout American history women have typically not held decision making jobs and were paid on average about 32 to 45 percent less than men for the same jobs. Women in the United States today have almost equal opportunities for jobs or professions than men do. Women now comprise a large percentage of the U.S. workforce and also continue their professions even after child birth. It is also fair to say that the fight is far from over. For nearly 167 years, women have fought tirelessly to gain equal rights. The Feminist Movement began in the summer of 1848. “The first women’s rights convention began, attended by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and other pioneers in the struggle for women’s rights. This first wave of feminists battled ridicule and scorn as they fought for legal and political equality for women” (University of Phoenix, 2012, p. 350). Susan B Anthony is probably the most widely recognizable participant from the suffrage movement. She was arrested while attempting to vote in the presidential election in 1872. It was not until 1919 that women finally gained the legal right to cast their votes. “Despite the opposition, the suffrage movement succeeded in gaining women the right to vote, a truly remarkable achievement because it had to rely on male legislators to do so” (University of Phoenix, 2012, p. 351). It also identifies any significant difference in characteristics of firms with women and foreign directors and those without women and foreign directors. Based on the secondary data derived from firms’ annual report, a longitudinal descriptive analysis on the trend of board diversity is presented. Mann-Whitney U test is conducted to identify several characteristics that differentiate between firms with women and foreign directors and those without women and foreign directors. This study found little change in the presence of women directors and foreign directors over the five-year period, which reflects a slow progress in board diversity in Malaysia. Other than that, several characteristics that differentiate between firms with women and foreign directors and those without women and foreign directors were highlighted. ...Abstract Diversity encompasses characteristics that categorizes individuals and allows for self-identification. Diversity presents itself in two different forms, visible and invisible. Those that are visible forms of diversity include ones physical appearance, sex, race, age, ethnicity, speech patterns and language.
