In healthcare there is certain standard at which customers/patients hold their doctors and physicians to. It is this standard which sets the tone of diversity in the healthcare workplace. From nurses to certified doctors there is a distinct difference in the amount of ethnical diversity that is seen. The higher up in the ranks the lower the ethnical differences are seen. This negative correlation is seen as the main concern within many companies as they try to hire more and more of the minority populations such as Asians, Hispanics and African Americans. Although, this lack of diversity is not limited to only ethnicity. The majority of healthcare higher ups is filled with white males, this is mostly because of the fact that the history of healthcare has been made up of white men in the forefront of healthcare. In preparation for any profession in the healthcare, category students are taught about racism and diversity in the workplace. From patients to coworkers, they are taught to treat them the same as someone of their own ethnicity. Although in some healthcare professions, such as radiology, there is not much diversity in the actual workplace. The lack of diversity is especially apparent in higher up ranks, such as a CEO, or health service manager. This lack of diversity shows in data collections of racial and ethnic employment. With 11.7% of them chief executive officers (CEOs), 21.5% health service managers, 43.6% healthcare support employees, and 62.3% maids and housekeeping cleaners (Flores and Combs, p 25).
