• What information about diversity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to others in ways that you may not have in the past?

In my studies I have found confirmation of my belief that diversity in the United States will only improve with time as the increasing number of interracial unions increase. I have also affirmed my belief that so long as society chooses to put people into groups we will always have issues surrounding fair treatment of people from all walks of life. It is the collective mentality that harms our nation the most. So long as people are divided they lack the strength to overcome governmental intrusion into their personal lives. So long as “we the people” are divided we will continue to see attacks on various groups of people, rather than the peace that unity can bring.

• Have you learned something new about your own racial, ethnic, or cultural history? Mostly everything I read about my culture was a re inforcement of what I already thought , I did learn a lot about my husbands race, (African American) and our bi racial children and how, I am glad to know that America is moving forward in acceptance of Diversity and hopefully will continue to learn and embrace each others culture. • Trends in immigration will continue to shape the demographics of the United States. What will the U.S. population look like in the year 2050? Why do you think so?

The United States in the year 2050 will be more of the melting pot, often referred to in our society. We have many from various races now, but in the future that number will be far larger. It is noted by Kotter, “From 2000 to 2050, the U.S. will add another 100 million to its

...Diversity in the United States Calvin A. Goldsberry Ethics/125 10/27/2013 Sisay Teketele Taking this course in ethics has given me more knowledge and understanding of how to relate to people of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. I understand that I have to resist the temptation to accept stereotypes that people believe and are portrayed in media about different groups of people. Whether it is a specific race, ethnic group, religious group, gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered people everyone deserves to be treated as an individual and given proper and appropriate respect. As always I hold the utmost respect for people of color because of the background of suffering with oppression and discrimination in America. I also have new found respect for other races such as Hispanics and Latinos because they have also had to deal with discrimination in this country as well. I did research on Hispanics and Latinos for one of my previous assignments in this course and found that they also suffer discrimination in the areas of education and employment similar to African-Americans. This course reiterated to me how strong African American people are because we never stopped fighting to stop segregation and discrimination against ourselves in this country. Trends in immigration in the United States indicate that immigration growth will remain high because people love America for its values and freedom. These immigration trends will continue to shape the demographics...

...Diversity in the United States Rick Dashnaw ETH/125 08/19/12 Beverly Sessoms Diversity in the United States This paper will discuss the different aspects of cultural and racial diversity in the United States. This assignment will include the effects of the media, and the effects of immigration on diversity. I will be discussing the possible ways to work towards a post-racism society nationwide. To get a better understanding of why people immigrate to the United States, we have to think about where they came from and why they decided to come here. This has helped me understand these questions, and have a different view towards immigration and diversity. I can understand that the circumstances and living conditions that these people have had to live with drove them out and to the United States for the freedoms and way of life. We cannot blame the immigrants for coming here because if the shoe was on the other foot it would have been us coming here to get away, and into the freedoms and liberty of the United States. As I am part of the white race in America, I have learned that my race is the most prevalent race in the United States, and always has been. Today, the children are much more diverse. If we look at it from an older to younger standpoint, “Older Americans are whiter. Younger Americans are more non-white.” (Claiborne, 2011). So we can look forward to a more diverse future with the next generations to grow up being very diverse. The white race may be outnumbered...

Diversity In The United States

...When you think about diversity the first topic that comes to mind is race. There are many different characteristics rather than race that define diversity. Diversity can mean different work styles, racial differences, ethnic differences, age, social class, regional differences, sexual minority, religion, political affiliation, skills, and abilities or disabilities. All of these characteristics listed make the world diverse. Through out the years the United States has become more and more diverse, which means that many different cultures and backgrounds are helping our communities and neighborhoods function. Growing up in an environment that has diversity creates cultural richness within our society. It allows for people to have a better understanding...

It has opened their eyes to see the United States is a huge melting pot that consist of people of all races, genders, and ethnic backgrounds. There is no single race or ethnicity which makes up our society. They believe every person regardless of their sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or skin color should have the same opportunities as everyone else and not be discriminated or stereotyped, because they are different. They also see, what people from the past have endured to make sure their children have a better life and opportunities that were not there for them. America still has a long way to go before everyone can live in harmony, but the country is on the right path. By feeling this way, they have learned a great deal about their own racial, ethnic and cultural history. Their ancestors came to this country during the famine in Ireland and were met with the same discrimination they were suffering in their country where they were known as the “white negroes.” They were faced with negative stereotyping that was very similar to that of enslaved Africans and African Americans, though not enslaved they faced a status as low as that of recently-freed slaves and...

...Diversity in the United States John Schank ETH 125 May 26, 2013 Avis Davis Through out this course there have been many different topics that we have looked at and discussed that have had a impact on me. The topic of stereotyping has impacted me the most. Before this course I was aware of stereotyping and the impact that it had on people however it was not something I really noticed in the world around me. Since our discussions on stereotyping I have noticed it more then I have ever before. I have since noticed how people are put into a certain category of how they should or are expected to act just because of their race or ethnic background. Over the next few decades I believe that there is going to be a big change in the demographics of this country. I believe that the groups that are currently seen as the minority groups will start to close the gap on the majority groups. I believe that over the next few decades the majority and minority lines will become gray and skewed I believe this because there is because of the immigration trends. There are still many people that are immigrating to this country from places of Latino backgrounds; because of this the Latino group will gain in numbers on the majority. The demographics that make up the United States are going to become more diversified over the next few decades and it might be harder to tell what the majority and minority groups really are. The major challenge that the people of the United...

Diversity in the United States of America

...Diversity has been the foundation of the United States. Diversity is not limited to race, gender, or religion; it includes age and disabilities as well. I have never thought of those as aspects of diversity. I do see them in that light since taking this course and I now realize the extent of the differences in the population of America. Without that variety our country would not be as magnificent as it is. I, myself, am about as American as I could get. I am a White female of no particular religion. I am neither young nor old. I have no disabilities. I am lucky that I do not suffer from discrimination. I am aware that, despite many advances in society, there is still a fair amount of discrimination in the United States. As we move into the future I hope that education will bring us to a post-racial society. My hope is that all people will learn about all types of lifestyles and through that education fear and hatred will be eliminated. While taking this class I have become aware of many more aspects and depths of prejudice and discrimination than I had ever thought of in the past. I was well aware of race, gender, and religion as aspect of a person that could be discriminated against. I did not, however, think of age as something to discriminate against a person because of. I have learned that there are many places that a person may have a hard time being accepted if they are a little older. Many jobs do not want to invest in a person they do not feel is a long term employee...

Culture Diversity in the United States

...Culture Diversity in the United States culture Diversity in the United States For decades, the human race has been identified as nothing more but unique! From the various shades of skin to the native language and geographic native land, people are diverse and have a major impact on our world and society. United States has had major culture changes as money continues to be one of the leading causes to mankind’s problems. However, knowledge of justice has help citizens and the governments realize to a degree, humans are the primary concern rather than the root to all madness “Money”. The effects of money has had an impression on the cultural diversity of the United States primary because power played the role of inequality that lead to the destruction of many families of minorities by the majority because of money. Moreover, the United States has overcome barriers to fix the disarray that power has had on individuals to help the citizens to reach out for understanding and answers that has led to the combination of knowledge, awareness and solutions. Let’s examine how! Understanding the history of how the United States met with cultural diversity has helped me to see that through history the effects begin with a negative view and later after harsh treatment was administered; lawmakers examined the outlook of the country to benefit the citizens. Two unique situations were race and gender that had an influential role of the American culture. Race was distinguished between...

The Importance Of Diversity In The United States

...Diversity is one of the most valuable and special thing we have in the United States of America. There are at least 300 different cultures in the United States, we will bump into someone from another culture very often. As the demand of global trading increased, it required us to have the skills to communicate efficiently with people all around the world in order to get our job done. This is the reason why we must take every culture serious and learn to understand and respect the difference of others. However, there are always something we will take for granted, as we “think” the person that we are communicating with see things the same as we do. The first thing we always take for granted is language, the second thing is eye-contact and body movement, the last thing is the way we talk. Due to English is a global language and therefore we except everyone that we are communicating with in the United State of America to know English. However, we do have some English as second language speaker here in the United State, therefore we will have to take that into account whenever we encounter them, and avoid using slang or jargons that they do not understand. Even though the same language, English are the main language of the United State, Canada and England. But they do not use it in the same way, as in vocabulary, spelling and dialect, they...

Women and Lgbt Diversity in the United States

...Women and LGBT Diversity in the United States Sharon Shewmake ETH/125 September 21, 2014 Maria Kithcart Women and LGBT Diversity in the United States It is fair to say that great strides have been made concerning equality for women throughout the United States. It is also fair to say that the fight is far from over. For nearly 167 years, women have fought tirelessly to gain equal rights. The Feminist Movement began in the summer of 1848. “The first women’s rights convention began, attended by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and other pioneers in the struggle for women’s rights. This first wave of feminists battled ridicule and scorn as they fought for legal and political equality for women” (University of Phoenix, 2012, p. 350). Susan B Anthony is probably the most widely recognizable participant from the suffrage movement. She was arrested while attempting to vote in the presidential election in 1872. It was not until 1919 that women finally gained the legal right to cast their votes. “Despite the opposition, the suffrage movement succeeded in gaining women the right to vote, a truly remarkable achievement because it had to rely on male legislators to do so” (University of Phoenix, 2012, p. 351). Unfortunately it would be many decades before a notable amount of progress was made. In the 1960’s, the Civil Rights Movement took up much of the attention. The anti-war movement did as well. Women’s rights seemed to get moved to the backburner. In the meantime, women...

Accepting Cultural Diversity In The United States

...cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can benefit all of humanity.” The United States, at its core, has always been founded on diversity. Since the idea of America being a melting pot began, our nation has become more diverse and has tirelessly strived to be more inclusive. However, both the church and secular classrooms struggle to understand and appreciate diversity causing many culture problems to arise. Our biggest priority should then be to identify the issues and highlight the all the benefits diversity brings. In order to accept diversity, it is important that you understand it. “Cultural diversity encompasses the whole range of human experiences including, but not limited to, age, gender, racial classification, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic class, ability, national origin, geographical location, political orientation, physical size, and appearance (“What’s So Important…”).” This shows that diversity is so important because it ultimately will affect at least one or more aspect of an individual’s life. Diversity in culture guides and shapes viewpoints and outlooks of individuals. Understanding...

The Role Of Gender Diversity In The United States

...One of the biggest problems facing corporations both in the United States and worldwide is closing the gender gap. One of the ways that companies are addressing the trouble of gender diversity in the work place is through programs called returnships. Returnships are aimed at mid-career level woman and men that have taken time off from work to care for their families. A lot of these programs are easy to implement as they are generally based off of the company’s typical internship program, and connects these “returners” with a mentor that will help them update their working knowledge of the field they are reentering. There are not many companies that are offering these programs at this point, but the number is increasing every year. After...

The country was populated by immigrants. By 1790, the population was about four million per the 1790 census, which was also the first census. About one million was Native Americans and about 800,000 were African Americans, which consisted of slaves and free negroes. Whites were the dominant culture and the majority. American culture was focused mainly on by white middle class people who were Protestant and came from Britain. Any immigrants who had these characteristics were welcome. ...Diversity in the United States Leslie Parvin ETH/125 September 8, 2013 Demetrick Pennie Diversity in the United States The information about diversity in the United States that was covered over the course of this class was very informative, and helped to better understand and relate to the many races that exist in our country in ways that I did not in the past. Furthermore, since my ancestors on my Father's side immigrated from Ireland, I learned more about the trials and tribulations they had to endure upon arriving to this great nation. In addition, the trends in immigration will continue to shape the demographics of our nation while we continue to face the challenges and benefits of such a large diverse nation. More important, although the United States is a nation built on immigrants our history shows we have a long way to go in order to foster a climate of acceptance and cultural pluralism. As a result, this course has helped me to understand how diverse our nation really is. Before taking this class, I had not really given much thought to how diverse our nation has become. However, after completing this class it has helped me in many ways to understand and properly identify not only the many races, but also the incredible uniqueness of their various cultures. According to Schaefer (2012), he stated, "In 2010, approximately 17 percent of the population was members of racial minorities, and another 16 percent or so were Hispanic" (p. 4). With this...

Cultural Diversity Week Nine Final

...Cultural Diversity Week Nine Final Ken Jarrell ETH/125 October, 7, 2012 Phillip Auld Cultural Diversity Week Nine Final Culture has many definitions in society it can be defined as group’s beliefs, behaviors, and other characteristics. Each culture and the way that they define themselves is what make up the values that are shared by society. Diversity simply defined is a variety of differences. A uniqueness of each cultures individual beliefs and behaviors. The United States is a nation of a most diverse culture and race of people in the world. Gaining a better understanding of the diversity in the United States can be accomplished by taking a closer look at how some of the groups of people are identified. According to, (Schaefer, 2012), there four types of minority or subordinate groups in the United States racial, ethnic, religious, and gender. Racial groups are the grouping of people that are set apart socially by their physical differences color being the most obvious. Other differences are at the mercy of what society will deem as different or obvious. Racial groups are designated more by their physical differences rather than their cultural differences. Ethnic groups are groups set apart from others because of their national origin or distinctive cultural patterns (Schaefer, 2012). Ethnic groups depend on where you are from geographically. Religious groups are associated with a religion other than the dominate religion. The Protestants outnumber the other religions...

Cultural Diversity

...Assignment Final Project Cultural Diversity Sabina Trumble April 8, 2012 Final Project Diversity in the United States is a work in progress and has been for over a century. There are many factors that are involved with diversity and some of them are race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, and sexual orientation. There are also factors that will stand in the way of achieving diversity in the United States and they are racism, prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes. Diversity can or cannot be found in numerous areas such as employment positions and promotions, wages and salaries, housing, and education. Diversity is usually over looked until it affects someone in a negative manner. Diversity has come a long way from how it used to be in the past. There once was a time when diversity did not exist. Different laws and regulations are in effect now that was not in the past such as the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Opportunity Act. I have learned that human behavior will have an effect on how diversity plays out. Individuality does not mean inferior, but sometimes our identities that express our individuality will result in us to be looked down upon by certain individuals or organizations. The people and organizations who commit this type of act are knowingly and specifically deterring diversity. I have learned a few things about my own race, ethnic, and cultural history since I have been in this class of Cultural Diversity. One thing that I have learned since...
