An Essay on "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife"

...An Essay on ”The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife” By Ernest Hemingway Seemingly, masculinity is a big part of men’s identity. Masculinity is usually associated with courage, independence, and assertiveness, and if a man’s pride is discriminated or somehow threatened, he will often do whatever is necessary to regain his pride. Thus, this might result in unethical behaviour. This is dealt with in Ernest Hemingway’s short story “The Doctor and the Doctor’s wife” from 1925 where masculinity is an overall theme and where he uses contrast and his iceberg technique to get his message across. Good intro (but remember to put two writing devices in) As stated, Hemingway illustrates the importance of masculinity for men’s identity in this short story. Firstly, Hemingway employs the importance of pride in male-to-male relationships by focusing on the interaction between the Doctor and the American Indian Dick Boulton. Secondly, Hemingway shows that a man’s pride comes above all, since the Doctor is dishonest to his wife regarding why he had a conflict with Boulton. Lastly, the use of contrast, e.g. the Doctor’s dishonesty as mentioned earlier, between the sexes empathize how masculinity is important to men, and this is what the following essay will be examining through the character of Nick’s father, the Doctor. In the beginning of the short story, the Doctor has hired three American Indians to cut some logs that broke free from a steamer and drifted on the beach. The three American...

Importance of Research

...Importance of Research HCS/465 6/13/16 Introduction Health care is based off of the research of those who have questions or researchers searching for answers. A young lady, who is not a physician but had a question about something she read wanted an answer to her question. This paper will discuss her question, research method and her results from conducting her research. A young lady, Lauren Hodge, researched topic was about carcinogens, “a substance that causes cancer” and which substance causes the cancerous cells to develop (merriam-webster, 2016). The topic of carcinogens first intrigued Lauren while visiting the doctor’s office as she read a lawsuit. She also knew that grilled chicken is a healthier choice to prepare chicken but the marinades that is used to season the chicken is the reason why the cancerous cells grow on the chicken. Her mother cooked for dinner grilled chicken and noticed that there was change in the meat; the meat turned whit around the edges. She wanted to know how and why these changes occur in the process. Lauren used different kinds of marinades to help with the research which included lemon juice, salt water, brown sugar, soy sauce and olive oil. She first baked the chicken without any marinades, she then baked more chicken using each of the above marinades. Lauren used qualitative research to conduct her hypothesis. Her choice of using this research methodology helps proves the reasons and motivation for the chemical changes...

...In reviewing surveys one must consider many variables in determining whether or not the data reflects good scientific research or deviates from such. Scientific research is testable and should have the ability to have the result reproduced. The ability to measure against present research or to reproduce with similar results bolsters the credibility of the research and the results. The research itself should be conducted in a manner that does not pollute the results, so to speak. For instance, when surveying individuals about a particular subject, it would be wise to do so in a manner so as to not make evident that one is being surveyed at all. As referenced in the text, the Hawthorne effect may elicit false data due to the awareness that one is being surveyed or studied (McIntyre, 2013). A online survey conducted by WABI TV5 regarding whether or not a person would stop going to their family doctor if the doctor stopped accepting their insurance was reviewed (2013). The result of the survey 711 votes for yes and 242 votes for no. The overwhelming majority appear to be moved by the fact that their personal doctor would no longer accept their insurance. The results of this survey could suggest a great deal of things; for instance, the results could suggest that people are motivated by money/cost. The survey does not specifically infer what the conclusion would represent in terms of cause and effect. Building upon the previous statement, the survey does not account for other factors...

What Is Research

...What is Research Katrina Rubio MHA614: Policy Formation and Leadership in Health Organizations Dr. Chanda Holsey May 21, 2012 Introduction Writing papers for school or proposals for your job means you have to look up information about whatever it is you are writing about, this is called research. Research is defined as the collecting of information about a particular subject (Research, 2012). You can’t write any papers properly without conducting some sort of research on the subject and the supporting evidence. What does Research mean to me? According to Tutt (2008), “Research could mean different things to different people and how they conduct the research could also be different.” Finding the ways to conduct the research and identifying exactly what to look for differs from person to person. Research is a powerful tool that will enable the one conducting the research to gain knowledge on the subject and be able to speak about it with great insight. To me, research is very important for anything, not just writing papers but looking up information on anything you may be interested in. When I was pregnant, I researched every single thing I could think of and that helped out a lot to be more informed about what was going on with me and my unborn baby. At every doctor’s appointment I was well educated and was able to ask my doctor really important questions if something didn’t seem right or if I just needed more information. Not only did I use research when I...

...body and all day long having the medicine to control diabetes is so simple and easy. This patch would just have to be placed on either hip for 13 hours a day. This patch would be great for people to be able to live their lives exactly how they have always wanted to. At the end of the day all the patient will need to do is just take the patch off and when they wake up in the morning put a new one on. Traveling with someone who has diabetes will also become a lot easier with the new patch. Nowadays there are so many restrictions as to what exactly you can and cannot bring on an airplane that just having a patch you could put in your carry-on would be less time at security check-ins and you probably would not even have to have a doctor’s note with you in order to try and explain why you have the needles with you (Traveling with Diabetes, n.d.). This patch could be created either by an entrepreneur or with intrapreneurialship. I think the best for this particular product would be the intrapreneurialship. The reason that this would be the best would be due to the fact that we are going to need many researchers and a lot of testing. Trying to create this patch on your own would take a...

As part of Ofcom’s work to promote media literacy we plan to undertake or support a range of research activities to monitor people’s skills, knowledge and understanding of communications technologies and the content they watch and listen to either through broadcasting or online. Ofcom defines media literacy as the ability to access, understand and create communications in a variety of contexts. We have published our strategy and priorities for the promotion of media literacy and these can be found on our website. In October 2004 we commissioned Professor David Buckingham and Professor Sonia Livingstone to report on recent relevant academic and other publicly-available research into children’s and adults’ media literacy respectively. The purpose of this work was to outline the range of studies conducted, the gaps in research, provide examples of innovative methodologies, and outline possible barriers and enablers to media literacy identified by these studies.
