Insomnia

I woke up, bathed in sweat. Once again a nightmare disturbed my night´s sleep. It was too early to early to get up, but I was restless. I knew I would not be able to fall asleep again, doesn´t matter how hard I´d try. I hated to get up at an unearthly hour! I rolled out of bed and trudged into the kitchen to have some lemonade.
It was still dark outside and the windy weather made the trees outside scratch against my windows. The thought about my nightmare disgusted me. I drank my glass of lemonade at one go. Afterwards I went to the bathroom to get some cold water in my face to refresh up a bit. I looked myself in the eyes in the mirror with dislike, wondering why such nightmares were torturing me night after night. I hated myself for that, but could not help it anyway.
All day long at work I was absent and worn out. All I could think about was that I wanted some sleep. I felt like I did not sleep a wink last night. Pictures from the nightmare whirled around in my head like an infinite movie. The whole day was a pure nightmare too, people looked strangely at me like I was a sick person instead of asking how I felt. But on the other hand I would not like to answer if they did anyway. None of their business.
That night I lay in my bed and stared around in the room for indefinite time. I felt so tired, but I was afraid of falling asleep to get hunted by nightmares again. I thought about how I could make an end of this riot. I was sick and tired of that condition. I was longing to get free of that. But how? Just before I fell asleep it struck me that I had forgot to lock the front door, I fetched a deep sigh and stood up to go out and lock it. I went back to bed and right after, I finally fell asleep.
Only a few hours later I woke up. Breathless. My heart was beating like never before. I got up and went to the toilet. My feet and legs hurt as if I had been running a marathon or something. I went back to bed and tried to sleep again, but every time I closed my eyes I saw myself running, like I was searching for something special. Running and running. I did not get more sleep that night. Tired and exhausted I prepared myself for work. When I was about to leave the house and open the front door, it was unlocked. Confusion struck me. Hadn´t I locked the door last night? Had someone been in here? Was I mad?
The thought about someone had been in my house while I was asleep filled my head the whole day long. Panic struck me. I decided to buy some extra padlocks for my door. After the realization that I was not able to concentrate that day at work, I went home early, telling my boss I wasn´t feeling well. In fact I didn´t lie. On my way home I bought those locks and set them up as the first thing when I came home. It calmed me a bit.
I sat down in the sofa, wondering what I was going to spend my day on. Meaninglessness struck me. What was I going to spend my life on? I lived in a nice house, even though it was too big for me alone. I had a great job, great pay, even though it wasn´t necessary…. It started raining outside, the rain beat against my windows. The sound of that made me drop to pieces. I fell asleep. I slept a couple of hours without any nightmares at all for the first time for a long time. Very long time. Maybe it could be a good idea to only sleep during the day, if the nightmares didn´t torment me there. However I got tired as it was getting dark and went to bed, hopefully to get a peaceful night´s sleep.
Next morning I woke up surprisingly late. Naked. Freezing. I shook all over my body. I sat up in bed and discovered my pyjamas on the floor. I reached out for it, it was wet. Had I been taking it of in my sleep, because of sweating too much? It wouldn´t be the first time. I had had a nightmare again. I remembered I had been running again, looking for something but I was disturbed in my search. I had no idea what it could be, but I felt that I had been closer to it this night than ever before. I wished I would reach it the following night, maybe it could release me from my nightmares forever after? It could release me from nightmares about eternal running through the darkness, through the nights panic-stricken and afraid. My existence would be totally different without nightmares, without rude awakenings, with complete sleep. Complete sleep.
On my way out, on my way to work, I discovered with anxiety that all of the padlocks were unlocked. I ran through the house in panic, but everything looked as always. My heartbeat was like an internal hammer. I ran out of the house all the way to work, I hoped work could make me think about something else. Impossible. I was so tired. The walls of the office came closer and closer to me. I needed air. I gasped for breath. I closed my eyes and tried to ignore it. Impossible. I saw myself running again through the rain. I heard a stifled scream from a woman. She needed air too. Two big hands held tight around her neck. Her eyes were filled with impotence. She fell into a swoon. The hands were mine….
I had never ever remembered so much from my nightmares before. It scared me. From where did I get these morbid thoughts at night? Why did those nightmares hunt me like that? Had I had nightmares like this one before or was it the first one? A million thoughts flew around in my head.
I went home in the rain. I sat down in the sofa like every other afternoon. It was already beginning to get dark outside. I felt lonely and sensitive. I had no friends, anymore. They had stopped calling me, seemingly because I never answered. To be honest I didn´t want friends anyway, they would undoubtedly discover that I wasn´t myself and I would be forced to talk about it.
Before I went to bed that night I checked the padlocks several times. I convinced myself that no one would be able to get in. I fell asleep quickly that night, I guess the reason for that was the vast of numbers of sleepless nights in recent time. Shortly after I tiptoed out of the bedroom in the dark. I opened the padlocks and ran out on bare feet on the wet street. It was raining. My pyjamas got wet quickly, I was freezing, but I didn´t care. I just ran through the darkness, through the night, through the rain. I felt like I was close to achieve my aim. I hoped not be disturbed, but I didn´t meet anyone on my way. Good for them. I ran and ran. Ran away from my house, my life. I was afraid of it. I needed air. My worst enemy was myself, not nightmares. When I reached the sea I stopped. I stood on a high rock with view over the enormous sea. View over my mastery filled with air. I had reached my destination. My sleepless nights had come to an end. My existence would from now on be totally different. Peaceful. Complete sleep. I leaned out in the pure air.
No awakening.

...Harry Liu Lori Runkle Language class 2A 25 October 2012 Is Starbucks a Good Choice? Let us set a certain setting, “It is a cold night during the winter. It is freezing cold outside, and you decide to buy a cup of coffee to keep warm. (It is always a good choice to buy a cup of coffee in the cold winter.) There are several choices including Starbucks, COSTA, Macafee , or perhaps some Nestle instant coffee.” I suppose most of those people who live in urban areas would probably choose Starbucks. As a matter of fact, I myself am a Starbucks’ fan. I have always had a weak point for their latte and cappuccino. But still, there are many people who suppose Starbucks is very costly and that instant coffee is just as good. So here comes the problem, is Starbucks a sensible choice? Starbucks may give you an impression that they did many beneficial things for the environment. Even at the back of their invoice, they print their so-called “Share Planet” project to contribute to help the environment. Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ means focusing on the core areas where we have the biggest influence – ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship and community involvement.(Starbucks share the planet project) But what have have done? The bizarre policy in Starbucks which is aimed at preventing germs developing in the taps in its 10,000 stores worldwide, has outraged environmental groups. Every Starbucks branch...

...PROLOGUE GILGAMESH KING IN URUK I WILL proclaim to the world the deeds of Gilgamesh. This was the man to whom all things were known; this was the king who knew the countries of the world. He was wise, he saw mysteries and knew secret things, he brought us a tale of the days before the flood. He went on a long journey, was weary, worn-out with labour, returning he rested, he engraved on a stone the whole story. When the gods created Gilgamesh they gave him a perfect body. Shamash the glorious sun endowed him with beauty, Adad the god of the storm endowed him with courage, the great gods made his beauty perfect, surpassing all others, terrifying like a great wild bull. Two thirds they made him god and one third man. In Uruk he built walls, a great rampart, and the temple of blessed Eanna for the god of the firmament Anu, and for Ishtar the goddess of love. Look at it still today: the outer wall where the cornice runs, it shines with the brilliance of copper; and the inner wall, it has no equal. Touch the threshold, it is ancient. Approach Eanna the dwelling of Ishtar, our lady of love and war, the like of which no latter-day king, no man alive can equal. Climb upon the wall of Uruk; walk along it, I say; regard the foundation terrace and examine the. masonry: is it not burnt brick and good? The seven sages laid the foundations THE COMING OF ENKIDU GILGAMESH went abroad in the world, but he met with none who could withstand his arms till be came to Uruk. But the men...

Since motivation influences productivity, managers need to understand what motivates employees to reach peak performance. It is not an easy task to increase employee motivation because employees respond in different ways to their jobs and their organization's practices. Managers pay a heavy price when employees have motivation problems. When high-performing employees have unresolved motivation issues, their performance either declines or they leave for another job. When poor-performing employees are not motivated to improve, they drag down results, reduce productivity among their team members and, worse, seldom leave because they have no place to go. ...Wiki Loves Monuments: Photograph a monument, help Wikipedia and win! Production theory From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Production theory is the study of production, or the economic process of converting inputs into outputs. Production uses resources to create a good or service that is suitable for use, gift-giving in a gift economy, or exchange in a market economy. This can include manufacturing, storing, shipping, and packaging. Some economists define production broadly as all economic activity other than consumption. They see every commercial activity other than the final purchase as some form of production. Production is a process, and as such it occurs through time and space. Because it is a flow concept, production is measured as a “rate of output per period of time”. There are three aspects to production processes: 1. the quantity of the good or service produced, 2. the form of the good or service created, 3. The temporal and spatial distribution of the good or service produced. A production process can be defined as any activity that increases the similarity between the pattern of demand for goods and services, and the quantity, form, shape, size, length and distribution of these goods and services available to the market place. The rapid change in climate will be too great to allow many eco-systems to suitably adapt, since the change have direct impact on biodiversity, agriculture, forestry, dry land, water resources and human health. Due to unusual weather pattern, rising greenhouse gas, declining air quality etc. society demands that business also take responsibility in safeguarding the planet. Green finance as a part of Green Banking makes great contribution to the transition to resource-efficient and low carbon industries i.e. green industry and green economy in general. Green banking is a component of the global initiative by a group of stakeholders to save environment. The state of environment in Bangladesh is rapidly deteriorating. The key areas of environmental degradation cover air pollution, water pollution and scarcity, encroachment of rivers, improper disposal of industrial medical and house-hold waste, deforestation, loss of open space and loss of biodiversity. ...Ozone Layer Depletion: Introduction Are we damaging our protective blanket? Sunlight contains some ultraviolet light, and when we expose ourselves to too much of it, we get a sunburn. Over time, too much exposure to ultraviolet light can lead to cataracts and skin cancer. The earth has a layer in the upper atmosphere, consisting mostly of ozone gas, that filters out most of the ultraviolet in the sun's radiation. Recently there has been scientific evidence that we have been releasing gases that damage this layer. Our country and others have reacted by invoking legislation that should eliminate these contaminants from the atmosphere.   What does the Ozone Layer do? * Ozone absorbs 99% of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without the Ozone Layer * Most of the harmful UV radiation will penetrate the atmosphere. The Ozone Layer The ozone layer is a layer in Earth's atmosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). This layer absorbs 97-99% of the sun's high frequency ultraviolet light, which is potentially damaging to life on earth. Over 90% of ozone in earth's atmosphere is present here "Relatively high" means a few parts per million—much higher than the concentrations in the lower atmosphere but still small compared to the main components of the atmosphere. It is mainly located in the lower portion...

...Executive Summary A group of investors has purchased the U.S. rights to sell a patented, innovative mousetrap from an inventor. The group has hired Martha House to manage the company that includes assuming responsibility for sales and marketing. Trap-Ease America has targeted the trap to housewives, whom it believes will be attracted... Trap-Ease America has the patent to a revolutionary new mouse trap. Trap-Ease America expected the revolutionary mouse trap to sell like hot cakes unfortunately things have not progressed as predicted so far. A few major problems can be identified with the overall business strategy of Trap-Ease America. First of all, the President of the company happens to be the only sales person as well for the product. Secondly, there seems to be a wrong selection in terms of market segmentation. Even though the product is a revolutionary one, however it is still only an improvement of an age-old device. Regardless of how much promotion the product has received from third party reviewers, the consumers still need to be educated on why this more expensive mouse trap is better than the conventional ones. Thus it is imperative that the President hires experienced sales people in order to reach and educate more potential consumers. Apart from that, it is also important to change focus in terms of target market, since the current strategy is targeting women. The target market should be anybody facing the issue of mice in their household. With the right marketing...
