The major plots of Don't call me Ishmael all have teamwork, a major plot was when Ishmael went to his first debate team speak. Thanks to James Scobie the first debate went perfect. Ishmael was on the sideline watching and he says, “Somehow thanks to scobie, we managed to pull some kind of a case together and scramble to our first debate. Ignatius was first speaker, Orazio was second and Scobie was third. When Scobie spoke, it was like someone turning on a light in a darkened room.” (p.141, bauer, 2003). As a leader James Scobie is able to bring the team together when examining the issues. He says, “Look, we can change, so let’s try to examine to topic.” (p.137, bauer, 2003). This quote shows us James Scobie trying to urge his dysfunctional team into investigating the debating issue. This is important because without teamwork and patience from James Scobie there would be no team. Ishmael is an unusual characters to show teamwork as he is extremely shy. James recently went to Sydney during the finals for his debate team. Ishmael takes the initiative to stop his teams negativity and to take over James’s role as leader. He says, “I don’t think we should forfeit. I think we owe it to Scobie to at least try. I had to brace myself before I could go on. Look, I’ll make a deal with you. If you don't want to speak, i’ll speak for you.”(p.185-186, bauer, 2003) This quote shows us that Ishmael has lost his timidness and now wants to take the leadership role because without a role model their team would have crumbled. This quote shows a different style of Ishmael, It shows us that Ishmael wants the team to never give
