Donald Hebb * Wanted to be a Writer Unlike Physicist Parents * At 33 was a Fellow at Montreal Neurological Institute * Absent Stimulation Causes Deterioration and Hallucinations * First Non-American to Win APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award * Had an Award for Canadian Scientists Named after Himself Donald Hebb decided at an early age he did not want to be a Physicist like his parents. He had other aspirations, he wanted to write and study. At the age of 33, Hebb received a position at the Montreal Neurological Institute as a research fellow (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). The research Hebb conducted ultimately contributed greatly to the modern knowledge of the brain. He discovered, when there is an absence of stimulation the resulting product is the brain has more difficulty in its ability to problem solve and even to concentrate (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). The absence causes deterioration in the ability to do things quickly and efficiently, causing extreme difficulty. Hebb has even reported a few people who said they had experienced hallucinations from the absence of stimulation (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). Hebb’s research was extremely helpful in the studies of airplane pilots and of truck drivers. Many of these workers had reported having hallucinations while on the job. Hebb discovered the hallucinations were due to the fact they were not experiencing enough mental stimulation to keep their brains alert and active. From the age of 43 until he retired at the age of 68, Hebb worked as a psychology professor at McGill, teaching students about his research and his life work (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). Hebb was also quite influential in the advancements of interrogation techniques; his research of sensory deprivation techniques was very beneficial in the realm of interrogation. There are many of his ideas regarding interrogation which are still in use today. Donald Hebb was the first person who was not a citizen of the United States to win the APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). Another major accomplishment of Hebb was the award which was named after him which honors the scientific contributions of Canadians (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). * Heuristic Model of Psychology * Brain is not a Switch Board it Works as a Whole * Brain Does Not Have to be Whole to Function * Cell Assembly & Phase Sequence – Fundamental Tools * First to Connect this Idea * Heuristic Influences are Still Present Today
Donald Hebb followed a relatively heuristic model of psychology (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). Hebb believed the brain was not a “complex switchboard” like many other theorists of his time believed. He was very stern in the fact the brain works as an entire entity. In other words, Hebb’s belief was the brain was a whole instead of many pieces (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). He discovered if you could remove a portion of a person’s brain, there would be no decline in the functioning of the brain. This was a radical thought for his time. Hebb had two major terms which he often used in his theories, the first is ‘cell assembly’ and the second is ‘phase sequence’ (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). The biggest contribution Hebb made in his theories was the fact he was able to create a demonstration which showed the processes which occur in cognition by only using neurons and synapses can indeed be studied. He called the neurons and synapses his “fundamental tools” in research (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). Hebb was the first psychologist to actually make this connection of studying the neurons and synapses; no one else had thought it was so simple. Hebb’s influence of the heuristic nature can still be seen through the many ideas which have come since the development of his theories. Not only did Hebb's model for the working of the mind influence how psychologists understood the processing of stimuli within the mind but it also paved the way for the creation of computational machines which mimicked the biological processes of a living nervous system. While the dominant form of synaptic transmission in the nervous system was later found to be chemical, modern artificial neural networks are still based on the transmission of signals via electrical impulses which Hebbian theory was first designed around.

Contributions of Hebb * Hebb’s Law * Hebbian Theory * Hebbian Synapse
Throughout history, there have been many movements in the field of psychology. Theories such as functionalism, behaviorism and associationalism have made great strides in the quest for understanding how humans behave and interact with society. By using those earlier schools of thought and moving forward, psychologists have continued to probe into those fundamental questions. One principle of the behaviorists was that the brain functioned like a switchboard (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). Advances in the study of the brain’s physiology allowed psychologists like Donald Hebb, who studied the effects of brain surgery on the psychology of patients, to dispute such a theory. Hebb’s work in the field of neuro-physiology paved the way for advances in engineering, robotics, and education. His contribution to human knowledge is significant, not only in the theory and its applications, but also in the approach to research that he held and taught his students, namely that even when a theory is wrong (as he often thought his own were) if it was testable it had value and would lead to better understanding. Hebb also became critical of the Stanford-Binet and Wechsler intelligence tests when used with brain surgery patients. These tests were designed to measure overall intelligence, whereas Hebb believed tests should be designed to measure more specific effects which surgery could have had on the patient. To achieve this, he created the Adult Comprehension Test and the Picture Anomaly Test. Putting the Picture Anomaly Test to use, he provided the first indication the right temporal lobe was involved in visual recognition. He also showed removal of large parts of the frontal lobe had little effect on intelligence. In fact, in one adult patient, who had a large portion of his frontal lobes removed in order to treat his epilepsy, Hebb noted "a striking post-operative improvement in personality and intellectual capacity". From these sorts of results, he started to believe the frontal lobes were instrumental in learning only early in life. In order to test his theory of the changing role of the frontal lobes with age, he designed a variable path maze for rats. Known as the Hebb-Williams maze, this became a method for measuring spatial and working memory of rats later used in countless studies of animal intelligence. Hebb used the maze to test the intelligence of rats blinded at different developmental stages, concluding “there is a lasting effect of infant experience on the problem-solving ability of the adult rat" (Morris, C., & Maisto, A., 2001, p.327). This became one of the main principles of developmental psychology, later helping those arguing the importance of the proposed Head Start programs for preschool children in economically poor neighborhoods. Hebb’s theory “When an axon of cell A is near enough to excite cell B and repeatedly or persistently takes part in firing it, some growth process or metabolic change takes place in one or both cells such that A's efficiency, as one of the cells firing B, is increased” (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009) became known as Hebbian theory and the models which follow this theory are said to exhibit Hebbian learning. This theory is often paraphrased as "Neurons that fire together wire together”( Olson & Hergenhahn,2009) and is commonly referred to as Hebb's Law. The combination of neurons which could be grouped together as one processing unit, Hebb referred to as "cell-assemblies" and their combination of connections made up the ever-changing algorithm which dictated the brain's response to stimuli. These cell-assemblies are also known as Hebbian Synapse.

Disney’s Acquisition of Marvel

... cartoons, movies, toys, etc.) while Marvel will benefit thanks to the capabilities of Disney’s advertising. Now with Disney and Marvel combined, they have eliminated Warner’s competitive advantage of having a Comic Studio backwards integrated to their corporation, which guarantees a continuous flow of exploitable material (characters). Nonetheless, Disney holds a notable competitive advantage over their competitor: they are more diversified: they have theme parks, consumer products and interactive media. Currently Disney is facing some critical issues after the acquisition, and they are: - Marvel’s most famous characters are compromised to Disney’s rivals. - Some of Disney’s main characters are out-dated (Pinocchio, Mickey-Mouse, Donald Duck, etc.). - Marvel could lose their identity (creative power) by the “take-over by a company associated with princesses and fairies” –Chmielewski & Fritz, 2009. It also good to point out that Marvel’s biggest creative asset is Stan Lee, now 89 years old. The recommendations are the following: On the functional level, Marvel’s legal department should focus on terminating as many contracts as possible,...

Donald Trump

...DONALD TRUMP-AMERICAN BUSINESS MAGNATE Over the years, Donald Trump, Chairman and President of the Trump Organization has become a master of situating himself in the limelight with out-spoken interviews, his books, his television show, and especially his king-size lifestyle. Nonetheless behind it all this lies a very sharp businessman. Someone who is a tough negotiator, someone who knows how to build a brand and simply someone who does all this while building successful working relations with others. This starts my essay on why I admire Donald Trump. “I like thinking big. If you’re going to be thinking about anything, you might as well think big.” Donald Trump. Entrepreneur Donald Trump, through set-backs, controversies and successes, is someone who comes to my mind as a person one can admire and emulate. Donald John Trump was born in Queens, New York on June 14, 1946; the fourth of five children of Mary and Frederick Trump. Frederick (1905-1999) was himself a real-estate developer. Donald’s parent hoped a military school education would greatly benefit him, as it did Dwight Eisenhower, Ted Turner, and Douglas MacArthur to name a few and prepare him to enter the family business. Being an active and energetic child, his parents sent him to the New York Military Academy (est. 1889), located in the Cornwall-on-Hudson, at age 13. Trend Article Analysis

...Trend Article Analysis University of Phoenix – MGT373 Jennifer Choy August 21, 2011 In this day and age there are millions of trends that are present in almost every industry. In order for an organization to be successful it is essential that they follow some of these trends so that their company appeals to people. This proves to be true for the event planning and convention industries. Two articles that pinpoint a couple different trends are “Nifty gadgets taking special events to a new level” and “ The article “Nifty gadgets taking special events to a new level” is a great example of trends within the planning and convention industries. In the years 2001-2004 these industries saw a huge decline in business. The reason for this was the failing economy. Companies and organizations could no longer fit events and gatherings into the budget. In 2005 event planning companies such as Dolce parties finally started to see an incline in corporate parties and events. However, these parties and events were at a much smaller scale. It was only the important people that were being invited to these gatherings because the budgets were still not back to where they were. Since the comeback of events was at a slow pace, event planners and convention industries decided to introduce some new gadgets to attract clientele. According to Stableford ( 2005)“Beyond the typical post-event surveys and evaluation of how many sales leads actually translate into qualified...

Republican Debate

...Republican Debate Essay The Republican Party has debates to allow the people to choose who they want to run for their party. The debate was held at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday, August 6th at 9:00 pm. The candidates involved in the debate were Trump, Bush, Walker, Huckabee, Carson, Cruz, Rubio, Paul, Christie, and Kasich. The stage was set up putting the two major candidates (Trump and Bush) in the center to help ensue more involved debates between the two parties. Although I did not want him to particularly win the debate, I believe that Donald Trump related best to the people in the audience. Although Jeb Bush was at the head of the polls towards the beginning of the run for candidacy, Donald Trump’s sense of raw anger in our country helped him relate to the American people much easier. The first question given to all the candidates was whether or not they would back up the nominee was not them, Trump was the only candidate to say that he would not. Early in the debate Trump was asked about his crude comment on women. He stated that he didn't have time for “total political correctness”, and that the statements were only about Rosie O’Donnell. He did apologize and explained that he had always said nice things about her but he threatened to be less cordial with his responses if she were going to continue replying in such a rude manner. Although I may not agree with most of Trump’s views on immigration and basic...

Internet Writing Assignment C

...Internet Writing Assignment C There are several polls that are currently being displayed. These include social issues, current election standings, and other items including things like the economy and educational issues. One poll that I found on these sites is how favorable is Donald Trump. I learned that Republicans favor him the most and Democrats dislike him the most and independent voters are somewhere in the middle. He is about 50/50 with the voters currently and slightly more unfavorable at the last poll. When he first started he was about 90% unfavorable so he has came a long way since then. After looking at both of these sites, I found that the pollingreport.com website is what I would use for a reference. Depending on what I am searching for I may turn to Gallup polls if it is regarding a social issue or something other than politics. Polling Report I found was more useful for information regarding presidential elections. For this reason I found Polling Report to be more useful especially to people in a college level political science class and to the American public. It is important to have all this poll data online because you can see how others think and you can have a reference available at all points in time. It helps us understand where we currently stand and think as a whole as a country. Polls give us a lot of information including how the people think a president is doing. Also, they are real important around election time because it shows where each candidate...

...SUNYIT Human Resource Management MGT 318 Professor N. Laino Leadership Jeff Albright April 30, 2014 In the waning seconds of Game 6 during the 1998 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan found himself with the ball after stealing it from Karl Malone. Down by one, and with just 5.2 seconds left on the clock, Jordan rose up for a jumper that would end up being the winning points of the game. This win would earn Michael Jordan his sixth NBA championship. With every successful championship win, there is a leader who helped lead the franchise. Just as experienced leadership translates to success on the playing field, experienced leadership is essential in the business world. Leadership is defined as “the use of power and influence to direct the activities of followers toward goal achievement. That direction can affect followers’ interpretation of events, the organization of their work activities, their commitment to key goals, their relationship with other followers, and their access to cooperation and support from other work units” (McGraw 418). Often times, people who are leaders are people of power; it’s how these leaders use their power to get followers to achieve goals. Someone who is powerful is often known for their ability to influence the behavior of others. In the workforce, most leaders are managers. There are three organizational forms of power that managers can use to influence employees: legitimate power, reward power, and coercive power. Legitimate power...

As Time Draws Near

...As the Time Draws Near This analytical essay will provide an analysis and interpretation of american writer Eowyn Ivey’s short story “As the Time Draws Near” (2012). The readers are introduced to the main character, Piper, who grew up in Alaska but later moved away. The short story follows her at a time when she has returned to Alaska in order to spread her dead father’s ashes under a particular spruce tree. She has a lot of thoughts about death and she is almost obsessed with it. Death is the focal point and theme in this short story. It raises questions such as what happens when we die? And what is death really? The story tells about our short time on earth and how fear of death can stand in the way of living life fully with all the experiences the current moment offers.
This essay will focus mainly on setting and the father’s outlook on life. Furthermore this essay will also include an analysis of the symbolism in the short story.
At the beginning the description of the nature in Alaska is a vivid portrayal followed by a number of incidents where people have been killed in or by this nature. Piper’s father is one of these people, he “falls out of the sky.” (p. 1, l. 10)
Her father with the name Red lived his life like it was an adventure. The description of the landscape appears in the same way - like a never-ending adventure. The tundra is a big and open landscape. The mountains, the glaciers and the snow continues into infinity. The same infinity that Piper’s father...

In this essay there is an analysis and interpret the short story´s composition, supernatural elements, theme and the relationship between Annie and her father. The composition in the short story contains flashbacks because it jumps back and forth in time. In the short story there are some streams of consciousness, and that is why the chronological order has been unregulated. There is harmony between the start and the end. The use of flashbacks has an effect - it gives a full picture of the theme to understand the main character and her problems dealing with her father’s dead. It is a common element for a short story to have flashbacks. “The first time I saw my father after he died, I was in the shower, hair plastered with conditioner, when the water stuttered and turned cold. He was at the sink in front of the misted-up mirror with the tap running, his back to me. It was two weeks after his funeral. His things were all where he’d left them. ” This is the first flash back in time in the short story...

...Mac Miller vs. Donald Trump Facts: In August 2011, shortly after the music video to the song reached 20 million views on YouTube, Donald Trump tweeted about Mac Millers song “Donald Trump” claiming that he would be the next Eminem and there were big things ahead of him. Mac Miller went on to send Donald Trump a plaque for the songs accomplishments after it began to do good. The song was part of his 2011 mix tape entitled Best Day Ever. The issue is still at hand with Trump recently posting a new status against Mac Miller, instead of Mac arguing with Trump he has chosen to kill the issue with kindness even posting that he does not want negative energy but rather to be friends. Mac in an interview revels that the reason behind Trumps tantrum could be due to the fact that he stated Trump was a douche in an interview with complex magazine. Issue: Mac Miller went on to get over 75 million hits with the song alone which Donald Trump noticed. Donald Trump then claimed that he needed to get paid due to the fact that Mac Miller used his name illegally and took to tweeter to further threaten Mac Miller. Some statements made by Trump include “Little @MacMiller, you illegally used my name for your song “Donald Trump” which now has over 75 million hits.”, “Little @MacMiller, I’m now going to teach you a big boy lesson about lawsuits and finance. Passover

...Passover vacation is definitely the most sought after vacation throughout my entire year. Although we are stuck eating matza the entire time it is an activity filled and extremely fun vacation. Every year my family goes to Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. We stay at the Trump Palace at 18101 Collins ave. First of all Passover vacation is about 16 days which is almost a week more than winter vacation. Another really significant reason I like the vacation is due to all the time I get to spend with my entire family. My brother Matan, his wife Nina and their daughter Juliette get their own apartment in the building next door. My sister maya, her husband Danny, their 2 daughters Adele and Joelle, my parents, my brother and I are the rest of the family. We stay in a relatively large apartment so it is not a big deal to fit the entire family. This year however is my sisters first year there with 2 children so things may be a bit more hectic. My seder is basically the same as everyone else's aside from two things. Moroccans sometimes have Ashkenaz traditions due to their close proximity and diffusion with Europe. The first thing is my father dipping his finger in the wine glass for all of the 10 plagues. The next and to me, most significant is “Be Bi Lo”, a song my father sings as he circles the seder platter over each person in my family's head. During the holiday days of the vacation my days are usually spent on the beach or by the pool with friends and family. My friends from nearby buildings...

...Bryony Crocker Duckworth Gov 2305 12 March 2016 Who Will They Choose? It’s 2016 and about that time we declare a new president of the United States. This year’s presidential candidates are quite unique and controversial; currently we have two democrats in the running, and only three republicans remaining after many drops out, still, there are 5 candidates going strong, fighting for the chance to be the next leader of our country. The Democratic Party candidates are Hillary Clinton, former US secretary of state, and Bernie Sanders, US senator, the Republican Party candidates, I will be talking about are Ted Cruz, US senator, and businessman Donald Trump. Starting with the Democratic side, almost all of us know Hillary Clinton as the former first lady of the United States, when she was married to Bill Clinton, but now it’s her chance to be the real first lady by possibly being elected the first female president. Hillary Rodham was born and raised Park Ridge, Chicago her father, Hugh, a hardcore republican, and her mother Dorothy had provided Hillary with a stable middle-class life. Hillary’s mother did not have the best childhood growing up, and this had sparked a flame in Hillary to fight for women’s rights and children’s needs everywhere. Hillary became heavily involved with social justice activism at Wellesley College, and was elected to be the first student speaker at her graduation.
