Don’t Ask Don’t Tell: Repeal or Not Repeal Up to now, the White House has focused on an aggressive effort to socialize our economy through the bailout of the auto industry, institution of the cap-and-trade system, various stimulus and bailout programs, and a takeover of the healthcare sector. (Bedey) Although these topics are still relevant, recently the motion to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” has become one of the most talked about subjects. Before we get into debate, one must know the basic principles of the policy and its history of origin.
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Don’t Pursue, Don’t Harass” (DADTDPDH or DADT for short) is a ban on lesbians, gays and bisexuals serving in the military. DADT is the only law in the United States that authorizes the firing of an American for being gay. There is no other federal, state, or local law like it. DADT is the only law that punishes lesbians, gays and bisexuals for coming out. Many Americans view DADT as a simple agreement with discretion as the key to job security. While this is true to some extent, in the eyes of a homosexual service member, it may not be so simple. An honest statement of one’s sexual orientation to anyone, anywhere, at anytime will lead to being fired. (Service Members Legal Defense Network) DADT was the result of a failed effort by President Clinton to end the ban on gays in the military. The bill was a result of the brutal 1992 murder of Seaman Allen Shindler.
Bill Clinton, a candidate at the time, proposed ending the ban by issuing an Executive Order overriding the Department of Defense regulations that barred gays from serving. Congress, however, intervened and the ban was made law, theoretically preventing action by future Commanders in Chief. (Service Members Legal Defense Network)

This law was significantly different from prior prohibitions on military service in three ways.

Homosexuality in the Military

...Homosexuality in the Military John P. Wernegreen DeVry University Professor Foley Homosexuality in the Military The issue of homosexuality in the military has long been considered a taboo subject, not to be discussed openly, and essentially prohibited with the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy established in the 1990’s. However, attitudes have changed and evolved over the years making homosexuality in general less of a stigma and more of an acceptable lifestyle that some people live. After much deliberation and research, the Department of Defense (DOD) has established its own set of rules and regulations, thus continuing the controversy and discrimination of homosexuality within its ranks and the redefining of its regulations. Beginning in 1916, the United States military began issuing an administrative discharge called a blue discharge. This discharge, also known as a “blue ticket,” was neither honorable nor dishonorable, but it “became the discharge of choice for commanders seeking to remove homosexual service members from the ranks…” (Serving, para. 1). The policy for discharging service members found to be homosexual or engaging in homosexual acts prior to these “blue tickets” was to court-martial them for sodomy, imprison them and subsequently dishonorably discharge them. When the United States began to mobilize troops in World War II, though, it was no longer practical to hold court-martials due to time constraints and troop movements, so commanders began administratively...

Dont Ask, Dont Tell 8 Page

...Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy DeVry University Online During a time of need and desperation, when another person jumped to your aid and helped you out, did you stop to think about what their sexual preference was and if so would it have mattered to you? Well if you are in one of the United States Military branches, it is almost guaranteed to have come up and it has caused enough of an issue, commotion and publicity that the President of the United States had to step in and put into place a policy for what is the beginning of a giant human rights and equality motion in history. Even in this new century, who you choose to have sex with or love, still appears to be an issue for many people. Some even know that this person may one day save your life and have your back and it’s still an issue for some. The struggles of discrimination and inequality were all too frequent in the lives of homosexuals who were serving or trying to serve in the United States Military started to catch attention with the media and caught the attention by many who had voices to make a difference for equality. During the civil rights movement in the 1960’s, homosexuality wasn’t a right that was openly fought for. Albeit that today, most people view the right to love whom they choose as a civil, and human right. Many people believe that a relationship should be between a man and a woman and therefore the rights of the homosexual community were not fought over in any of the early civil rights movements...

Drugs Legalisation

...It has been sad that people will go to great lengths to acquire drugs which cause a certain “high“ experience .Even legalisation protests ,e.g. the world movement to legalise weed which is currently taking place all over the internet.so we took initiative to find out what Botswana’s youth thought on the issue of legalising illicit drugs. Interview 1 Interviewer: do you do drugs? Scholar: no I don’t. Interviewer: Have u ever wanted to do drugs? Scholar: Because I am not a fan of drugs. I feel that they would destroy my life I start Interviewer: Do u think legalisation of illicit drugs is a solution to abuse? Scholar: But how can that be a solution? No. Relying on any type of drugs to be happy is not right and is no way to live life, Interviewer: Why do u say it’s not right ?Isn’t life about what makes one happy so what if it is right to that person as it is the only way she/he can have a happy life, are they still wrong? Scholar: Life is what u make of it, so when u take drugs then you are letting something else control your life, you are giving away your power to something as petty as drugs? No thank you. Interviewer: Is there an upside legalisation? I mean don’t u think the intake of drugs could be monitored and henceforth reducing chancing of addiction? Scholar: Well I don’t think so because even though alcohol is legal and they try to regulate the total amount a person can take, it just never works, people still get wasted so it would probably be the same. ...ld students be allowed to grade their teachers? Teachers and students both are the main part of the school. School doesn’t work the either ways. Teachers make us study and improve, while we implement it. Teachers grade us on our basic skills as well as the way we study and improve. But what if the teacher is not capable enough to do so? We should get a chance to grade them too. Almost all schools doesn’t encourage this kind of grading, or maybe none does. According to me this type of grading should be taken into account. Teachers should be graded on their teaching skill, behaviour in class and the interaction level with the students. What if the teacher is very strict and over rules the children or a single child? The child has to remain quiet and keep on facing it, as he doesn’t have any right to oppose him or make him realise, that what he/she is doing is wrong. The grading of the teachers would help the school to understand the children’s problem. If the teacher is not making the students study up to the mark, they have no options other than implementing by self. This kind of problems arise in all the schools but no schools try to solve it or make a better way. If all the schools would help the students this way, the students would love learning as well as will like to interact with the teachers. All the grades given to the teachers should be taken into account and should be checked by the higher authorities. If this happen then all schools would have students who would...

No Good Read Goes Unpunished Analysis

...people in America find this funny. Period” (Miller, 2018). The portrayal of Apu in “The Simpsons” furthers the stereotypical notions of Indians and people of Indian heritage in the United States. “The Simpsons” is a dynamic show following the mishaps of a nuclear family as they make their way through often unrealistic circumstances. This show often builds on the current events of the day, having them take place in a cartoon world where there is more leeway to test the boundaries of political correctness. The intended audience of this show is young adults and the show typically falls under the category of “low-brow” humor, while also including satirical pieces and political commentary. “The Simpsons” are a middle-class family which may also appeal to middle class viewers. This show is the longest running animated series to date (Park, 2018). I chose this particular example because of its recent release date, which has even more weight under the Trump administration and foreign policy changes. I also chose this example because “The Simpsons” is the longest running show to date, therefore people are likely to be familiar with it, even if they do not regularly watch the show. Apu plays a stereotypical Indian role: he has a heavy Indian accent and owns a “Kwik-E-Mart”. The idea of Indian stereotypes, specifically accent, was addressed before the show aired as the directors noted on casting slips that Apu was not Indian. However, the white voice actor for Apu, Hank Azaria, decided to...

I find the charge sheet particularly interesting for two reasons. What the government says that Manning did with the material he accessed, and an apparent discrepancy between the government’s depiction of the timing and Wired’s depiction of it. What the government knows about what Manning did with the information First, it describes the information he accessed differently as follows:   The video of the July 12, 2007 Apache killing of Reuters journalists (obtained via unauthorized access, loaded onto his unsecured computer, transmitted to someone unauthorized to receive it) The Rejkjavik State Department...

Ban Plastic or Not

...The Effects of Plastic Bags on Environmentt * | * The effects of plastic bags on the environment are really quite devastating. While there are many objections to the banning of plastic bags based solely on their convenience, the damage to the environment needs to be controlled. * There is no way to strictly limit the effects of plastic bags on the environment because there is no disposal method that will really help eliminate the problem. While reusing them is the first step, most people either don't or can't based on store policies. They are not durable enough to stand up to numerous trips to the store so often the best that citizens can do is reuse them when following pooper scooper laws. * The biggest problem with this is that once they have been soiled the end up in the trash, which then ends up in the landfill or burned. Either solution is very poor for the environment. Burning emits toxic gases that harm the atmosphere and increase the level of VOCs in the air while landfills hold them indefinitely as part of the plastic waste problem throughout the globe. * Plastic Bag Litter * Even when citizens try to manage their plastic bag disposal wind plays a role in carrying them away as litter. This litter is not biodegradable and thus where it lands it tends to stay for long period of time. A bag that is eventually ripped to shreds from high winds or other factors doesn't disappear but instead is spread in smaller amounts throughout the area. This can cause...
