In "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment", written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dr. Heidegger invited four of his elderly friends to his eerie study and asked them to help him in an experiment. He explained the experiment with an old, withered rose which he took from his magic black folio.
He took the rose which he claimed was given to him fity five years ago by his now deceased fiance, and dropped it into a vase with water from the fountain of youth. His guests watched the rose turn back into a freshly-bloomed flower. Water from the fountain is served to his guests to go back to their days of youth.
Some believe the moments that the elderly guests spent reliving their youth was real. The choice of words and imagery prove otherwise, however, and while some use the rose to defend that it was real, it could have been magic. The author's choice of words such as "seem" show that the transformation was only metaphorical and not physical. For example, the author writes, "even while the draught was passing down their throats, it seemed to have wrought a change on their whole systems." and "They stood still and shivered; for it seemed as if gray Time were calling them back from their sunny youth, far down into the chill and darksome vale of years".
The author also shows doubt himself: "Was it a delusion?" The imagery the author uses also helps us to conclude that the transformation was not real. The imagery that the author gives us shows that the "water" could have actually been alcohol. The water that is served in champagne glasses is described as bubbly and diffusing a "pleasant perfume".
The author also later states that the water almost immediately effected the guests "not unlike what might have been produced by a glass of generous wine". While each of the guests started demanding more water and seemed to appear more lively, the doctor's tall mirror showed reality, reflecting their old and gray figures. Those that defend that the transformation was real use the rose that appeared to transform as an example. However, it is not certain that the rose transformation was real. The guests, who hadn't been served the bubbly water, were skeptical and believed that the rose that came from the magic book could be an illusion.
In an eerie room like the doctor's, it would not be surprising to see sorcery or magic purposes, and it is possible that the rose was one of them. The choice or words such as "seem", the author's rhetorical questions, the imagery that hinted that the water from the fountain of youth could have actually been alcohol and the reflection of reality on the tall mirror supports the case that the transformation that the author describes did not alter their bodies.
Although the rose seems to turn back into freshly-bloomed, the doctor could have easily made it appear so with a magic trick, as the guests suspected.

He was known for his dark and sometimes romantic stories. This story was very interesting to read because it gives a little backstory on why the friends were chosen for the experiment. Hawthorne introduces his character to the readers and tells about how his “test subjects” Mr. Medbourne, Colonel Killigrew, and Mr. Gascoigne at one point would kill each other to gain the hand of the fair Widow Clara Wycherly. It really helps to outline the plot of the story and really helps to foreshadow what might be to come later in the story. The story starts of with Dr. Heidegger and his invited guests in his study. He tells insight of his guests to give a little backstory on why he had chosen them for his experiment. Dr. Heidegger's Experiment

...Nathaniel Hawthorne is best known for his American short stories and romance novelists. “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” has a background of a peculiar doctor who gives his four acquaintances a “concoction” from the mythical Fountain of Youth and observes their reactions as they recollect their youth again. A withered flower was placed in the water to give a representation of what would happen, which resulted in rejuvenation of life in the petals. The four aged folks departed from their prime; each misused characteristics of fortune (youth, wealth, power, beauty) and is now paying the misfortunes. It is obvious to see the lessons taught as Heidegger warned his guests to be cautious in transporting through the menace of their youthfulness time period....

Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment

...Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment No one is fond of growing up; in fact, everyone wants to stay forever young. In the short story “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a character named Dr. Heidegger designed an experiment in which four old friends were to drink water from the fountain of youth to see what the outcome would be. Throughout the short story, Hawthorne expresses an allegory stating that one cannot alter the past. In order to convince the four friends to take part in the experiment, Dr. Heidegger performed an example in which he placed an old, dried up rose into a vase filled with water from the fountain of youth. In no time, the “crushed and dried pedals stirred …as if the flower were reviving from a death-like slumber; …and there was the rose of half a century, looking …scarcely full-blown” (158). The rose had been revived into what seemed a healthy and radiant flower. After some time passed, however, the rose “continued to shrivel up, till it became as dry and fragile as when the doctor had first thrown it into the vase” (172). The rose was back to normal; old and delicate. Convinced, the four friends drank the water and had been restored to when they were young, beautiful, rich, and healthy. However, no longer after they had celebrated being young again, they returned back to their original aged selves, like the rose. One of the friends who participated in the experiment is a gentle woman named Widow Wycherly who tells us she was a “great beauty...

Dr. Hiegners Expeiment

...The story begins with old Dr. Heidegger inviting four elderly friends over to his rather eerie study: Colonel Killigrew, Mr. Medbourne, Mr. Gascoigne, and the Widow Wycherly. The four old folks have all fallen a long way from their prime; each squandered his own type of fortune (youth, money, power, beauty) and is now in a miserable state. The narrator also informs us that, when they were young, the three men used to fight over the attention of the Widow Wycherly.Heidegger's creepy study contains, among other things, a bust of Hippocrates with whom Dr. Heidegger consults from time to time, a magic black book, a skeleton in a closet, and a mirror that supposedly contains the visages of Heidegger's dead patients. The Doctor presents his guests with four empty champagne glasses and an ornate vase full of clear, bubbling liquid. He takes an old, withered rose, drops it into the vase, and shows his guests that it has in fact been rejuvenated to a fresh-blooming flower. Dr. Heidegger then claims that the liquid in the vase is water from the mythical Fountain of Youth. He would like their help in an experiment: they drink the water, he sits back and watches. The guests are clearly skeptical, but they agree. Before they drink, Dr. Heidegger warns them not to make the same mistakes they did the first time they were young. The guests drink, and they believe they have grown young again. (Whether or not they actually are physically transformed is ambiguous.) Of course, they...

Comparing Romanticism In The Devil And Tom Walker, And The Raven

...Literary works like Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment," Washington Irving's "The Devil and Tom Walker," and Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" show characteristics of the American Romantic Age. All of these stories have an emphasis on emotions rather than intellect and tend to reject realism and accept idealism. In Hawthorne's tale, he writes of an eccentric Dr. Heidegger who invites four of his elderly friends to his study to partake in one of his new experiments. This story exemplifies romanticism because it is highly imaginative and far-fetched. An acquaintance of the doctor discovers the fabled Fountain of Youth and sends him a vase full of its water. He asks his guests, eager to relive their glory days, to drink the magical concoction. Romanticism focuses on human nature and how humans inevitably sin and feel guilty. Each of the four...
