Dr. House: A Rational Persuasion Analysis

In this clip, it is obvious that Dr. House has power over his team. What is interesting is that House’s power seems to diminish as the clip draws to a close. Dr. House can be described as having referent power, or power to control another person because of their desire to identify with him (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2008 page 220). In the beginning of the clip, the team respects and reveres Dr. House because of his reputation. House has referent power over all three team members in the beginning and they do whatever tests he asks them to do. The team wants to believe, as House does, that the patient is curable. They also want to have a career status like Dr. House’s, or at least how they perceive his status to be. The three doctors obeyed …show more content…
The rational persuasion strategy uses facts, knowledge, and rational argument to convince others to support a change (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn, 2008 page 287). Cameron used medical facts and logical reasoning to prove House wrong. She used her special knowledge of House’s personality to deduce that he was more worried about defining the disease than caring for the patient. She pointed out to House that this patient’s case was “only interesting if you’re [House] right. If you’re wrong we’re torturing this guy to amuse you.” (House clip 26:41-26:46) Dr. Foreman also used some logical arguments to oppose House. Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn pointed out that, “if logic is effectively communicated, you are sure of the person’s adopting the proposed change” (2008, page 288). In response to the team’s effort to change their perspectives and behaviors, Dr. House is a great example of resistance to change. Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn (2008 page 289) define resistance to change as any attitude or behavior that shows unwillingness to make or support a change. He has been ordered by the Admiral to go on a mission to the Klingon home world and fire torpedoes at a man who is hiding out there. His crew all seem to believe that they should not follow through with these orders because it is morally wrong, extremely dangerous, and outside of their usual job parameters. Kirk uses directive leadership to try and handle the situation. Directive leadership spells out the what and how of subordinates’ tasks (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn 2008) (page 249). In the clip, Captain Kirk ordered Scotty to sign for the torpedoes even though Scotty does not want to. He refuses to give Scotty the option of refusal and tells him directly what to do and how he should do his job. Kirk ignores the feelings and ideas of his subordinates and directly orders them what to do. He lacks consideration in the dealings with his subordinates. Consideration is being sensitive to people’s feelings and trying to make things pleasant for the followers (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn 2008)(page 245). Kirk completely ignores any idea of consideration, his goal is just to get the job done. He does not listen to multiple followers complaints and furthermore refuses to see their viewpoint on the situation. Kirk does not try and make things pleasant for his followers by using consideration, he actually forces Scotty to resign instead of trying
