In the article Doctor convicted of murder for patients' drug overdoses gets 30 years to life in prison by L.A. Times reporter Marisa Gerber, we learn that Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng a doctor is the first in the U.S. that is convicted of murder for overprescribing drugs to patients. Dr. Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng was found guilty of second-degree murder for the murders of three of her patients Vu Nguyen, 28, Steven Ogle, 25, and Joey Rovero, 21 who all fatally overdosed from prescription drugs she had prescribe. According to this article, “Dr. Tseng is among a small but growing number of doctors charged with murder for prescribing painkillers that killed patients.” In this case it seems as the Dr. Tseng was more worried about money then the lives of people who were in her care. In Dr. Tseng excuses she says she was never properly trained in addiction medicine or pain management. After reading this article and following Dr. Tseng,s case I think that there is a major growing problem with doctors and prescribing prescription that are harmful to some patients with an addiction problem. I believe that prescription drug addiction is swept under the rug because of it unknowns and the unawareness of how harmful these drugs are. This really touches home for me because last year June 2015 I lost my cousin to an overdose on a prescription pain medication drug called Soma. One of the moms April Rovero of the patients who died in Dr. Tseng case is the founder of The National Coalition against Prescription Drug Abuse (NCAPDA) http://ncapda.org/ non-profit organization that is established to generate nationwide awareness about the dangers of prescription drug.
