The lecture by Dr. Victoria Sweet was very interesting. Dr. Sweet told us the history of Laguna Honda and how it came to be the only hospital of its kind when health insurance costs were raised. She talked about how the kind of medicine she describes in her book, “slow medicine” is more efficient than “fast medicine” although many, including hospital directors, think of it as inefficient. Through stories of her patients she demonstrated this very point, for example a patient with a severe bed sore had just received skin grafts from the other hospitals but that skin would soon just rot also and eventually it grew so large it could not be grafted, that is when the patient was sent to Laguna Honda.
