The Elephant and the Dragon is an amazing book about globalization and the rise of the international market specifically in China and India. The book digs deep into the history of China and India to unravel the phenomal growth which has been taking place within the last decade. In fact these two countries were once extremely sheltered and self-imposed however understood and realized the opportunity for major growth would take its country to new heights. The Chinese were essentially influenced and inspired by Singapore to accept capitalism. Although communist, their leaders prized political stability, and they were willing to reverse the very essence of their party doctrine to accept and achieve capitalism. The communist party made it clear however, that they would allow economic freedom but not political freedom. They took very great measures to stay in control, some may even say too harsh. Furthermore, China was after more than just jobs, they were after modernization itself. The Chinese government made it very attractive for Americans and other firms to build factories, hire Chinese workers, and bring in the modern world’s expertise into China. However with all the talk about modernization, China’s government still placed the perceived needs of the state well ahead of individual liberties. In contract, following its independence from Britain, India had spent decades in economic exile. It took them much longer to modernize and accept some forms of capitalism. In fact, India eventually turned to China for inspiration, which once looked to Singapore. Today, India is well developing into a modernized country. In fact, Chinese and Indians are increasingly making what Westerners buy, answering their customer service phone calls, or themselves buying western branded goods. This sense of globalization has lifted over 200 million Indians and Chinese out of poverty

The Elephant and the Dragon Book Report

...look at a history of global economics over the years, you would find that many countries achieve (and sometimes fall from) economic superpower status. Examples of such countries include the U.S, the U.K, and Japan. The most current countries to join that list are India and China. However, whether they stay that way has yet to be seen. The Elephant and the Dragon written by Robyn Meredith takes a look at both countries’ rise to economic superpower status, and how it affects us now as well as the future. To achieve this Meredith begins with a recent history of each of the countries by examining the political and social factors related to the each of the countries’ rise.  This is followed with a look into some of the economic similarities and differences between India and China as well as how the reforms both countries have in place affect U.S businesses and citizens.  Through this process Meredith truly gives a truly complete experience with past, present and future analyzed. Unfortunately, there are certain areas of the book where issues with the material and Meredith’s interpretation arise. The first two chapters in The Elephant and the Dragon delve into the pasts of China and India, and the policies that made their growth possible. Meredith begins her look into China by looking at the effects of Mao’s rule. A major point that is brought up is Mao’s policy to collectivize farming. The policy to collectivize farming resulted in a 40% drop in agricultural production and therefore...

Dinosaurs in the Bible

...DINOSAURS IN THE BIBLE There are a number of places where it appears that dinosaurs or other similar creatures are mentioned in the scriptures. Remember that the Bible was translated into English long before the word "dinosaur" was coined. However, the word "dragon" appears 21 times in the Old Testament alone. "You shall tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shall you trample under feet" (Psalm 91:13). From the context it is clearly speaking about a real creature that it would be impressive and intimidating to step on! Jeremiah 51:34 tells, "he has swallowed me up like a dragon..." which brings to mind the way many carnivorous reptiles swallow their prey whole. Both dragons of the sea (Psalm 74:13) and field (Isaiah 43:20) are mentioned. Indeed, Genesis 1:21 can best be translated: "And God created great sea monsters..." One such sea monster became sufficiently well-known to the ancients to be given the special name "Rahab" (Isaiah 51:9). The prophet Ezekiel likens Pharaoh to a sea monster that invaded the Nile river and stirred up the mud (32:2). The Hebrew word, "Tannin," is from the root meaning "to extend." The language conjures up an image of a long-necked plesiosaur-like creature paddling up the river and stirring up mud from the Nile delta with its flippers. Just such a creature is depicted by the ancient Egyptians who may have netted one just as Ezekiel describes in verse 3. Job is the oldest book in the Bible. This book is very interesting...

Museum Essay

...Thuy Truong – 02390838 Professor Doyle ARTH 103 November 17, 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy One day when I was wandering around Bowers Museum, I came across nine oversized paintings shown in an exhibition made entirely by one extraordinary 69-year-old Buddhist monk in Nepal named Shashi Dhoj Tulachan, a second generation thangka artist living. The practice of thangka art has been around for centuries and is carried out by highly trained monks for the purpose of teaching about Buddha and the tenets of the Buddhist religion. The paintings attracted me because they were so big and colourful that I had to spend quite some time to fully absorb the beauty of the art. They are not thangka paintings in the traditional sense. Thangkas are usually much smaller and are rolled on canvas so that they can be easily transported and hung anywhere for teaching. All of the thangkas I saw were enormous, comparing to a regularly sized painting. They cover three-fourths the height of the wall and are four or five times wider than a normal human. These paintings also deviate from the rules of thangka art in the use of colours, shape, proportion, characteristics and qualities. The traditional thangka paintings are strictly regulated, while the thangkas shown in Bowers Museum are more free-flowing, giving the artist more room for creativity. Although all nine thangkas share the same size and characteristics, Virupaksa (Dharma King of the West Direction) with 16 attendants painting caught my eyes...

So I told Arthur to step back, my father and I are going to have an epic wizard battle. I let my father begin first; he turned his evil body into a small rat and came straight for my pearly white beard. I had to act quickly so I thought; what is the one thing that rats are most scared so bam! I morphed into an elephant. As Arthur fell to the ground laughing because everyone knows that elephants are terrified of rats. I thought to myself and tried to come up with something new and all I could think of was a dog, so what the heck bam! I morphed myself into a...

My Travel Experience

...parking lot in our Black, Ford Taurus. With my face glued to the window, my eyes began to glisten with joy as I saw the bright, colliding colors of the roller coasters twisting and turning. As I proceeded to step out the vehicle, I could hear the screams of terror and excitement. Each year my family takes a trip outside of my hometown of Detroit, MI and this particular year we decided to go to Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. My favorite part of the trip was finally riding my first roller coaster. The name of the ride was the Iron Dragon. It is not that big but then it looked really huge to me. It is Orange and Red with Black and Green riding cars. It has hills, twists and turns that terrified me at first glance. I cried the first time as I was getting on, but I was so scared that the operators let me off. Later on in the day, I finally rode it and I felt accomplished that I had finally done so. After riding, I ordered an elephant ear. The hypnotizing smell of freshly cooked dough combined with the essence of sugar and cinnamon made my mouth water. The aroma reminded me of when my mom used to make fresh cinnamon rolls for breakfast in the mornings. As the sugar and cinnamon stuck to my fingers, it felt like sand on my tongue because it was so ridged. I savored every bite of the tasty treat and even saved some for the ride home. The park is very big, which means there are always a lot of people there. I did not get to get on all the rides that I wanted to because...

My Life Before Being a Candidate Coast Guard Officer

...asked “Why do you want to study in UP?” without a doubt, I readily answered “To be able to study in the premier university of the country is my childhood dream and I don’t want it to be just any other dream.” So I got in and I can clearly remember the my first day in UP, I am wearing my best that day because of mom reminded me to always dress as if you’re going to see you worst enemy. I was wearing elephant pants, wedges and a vintage tight fitting top while most of my classmates are just wearing shorts and slippers. It is really a great feeling that I am at my dream university, I really can’t imagine myself graduating from any other school except UP. I took up Bachelor in Sport Science, a pre-medical course because I wanted to pursue medicine at that time. I love science and how the human body works so I worked hard and studied well to become a university scholar each semester. I would skip gimiks and parties because I have a goal and I have to meet those. I am thinking that, I am already here so why not make the most out of it. During my sophomore year, I got invited to join the UP Dragon boat Team, my friends are joining and because of peer pressure I joined. I am not the strongest of the team, but since I wanted to be on the line-up I did not skip any training day. My mom would scold me because she thought that I am taking my studies for granted. Think India Book Review

...management education, the democratic form of government and overall the attitude of Indians to business-‘ relationship first business later’ working in their favour in the long run, making them the next superpower by 2050 as predicted by Goldman Sachs. Summary: Overall the book would be beneficial for those who need to know why India is considered a future superpower , anyone interested in exploring new markets. On the negative side the author is a little biased, showing a rosy picture of India ignoring some of the major issues like communal disputes, linguistic differences, and oppressive bureaucracy which can hamper the growth. Dragon

...Dragon Name Dragon The word dragon entered the English language in the early 13th century from Old French dragon, which in turn comes from Latin draconem (nominative draco) meaning "huge serpent, dragon", from the Greek word δράκων, drakon (genitive drakontos, δράκοντος) "serpent, giant seafish". The Greek and Latin term referred to any great serpent, not necessarily mythological, and this usage was also current in English up to the 18th century. Morphology A dragon is a mythological representation of a reptile. In antiquity, dragons were mostly envisaged as serpents, but since the Middle Ages, it has become common to depict them with legs, resembling a lizard. Dragons are usually shown in modern times with a body like a huge lizard, or a snake with two pairs of lizard-type legs, and able to emit fire from their mouths. The European dragon has bat-like wings growing from its back. A dragon-like creature with wings but only a single pair of legs is known as a wyvern. Comparative mythology Further information: Chaoskampf, Sea serpent, Proto-Indo-European religion § Dragon or Serpent and Serpent (Bible) The association of the serpent with a monstrous opponent overcome by a heroic deity has its roots in the mythology of the Ancient Near East, including Canaanite (Hebrew, Ugaritic), Hittite and Mesopotamian.
