eeper The book I am writing my report on is the Dragon Keeper by Carole Wilkinson. I picked this book because it looks interesting and it’s an adventure book. I love reading adventure books because it feels like I am a part of the adventure. Also the book takes place in China, I like reading books about my culture. This book takes place in a far Western mountain called Huangling Mountain on the edge of the Han Empire in ancient China. A young slave girl with no name lives in one of the Emperor’s palace, looking after the animals and her cruel master. Her parents sold her to Master Lan, an imperial dragon keeper, at a young age. Along the way, the nameless girl found a mouse that she kept for a pet to keep her company. She named the moose Hua. At first Master Lan would do all the work that he was assigned to do, but after a while he started to complain that he is getting older and made the nameless girl do all the work like cooking, feeding the animals including the dragons and etc. The slave was afraid to take care of Master Lan two dragons that lives in a pit, but she puts aside her fears and feeds the dragon every day. But one day the one of the dragons die. The girl felt guilty because the day she had eaten a bowl a fresh food it was meant for the dragons. She made sure to keep the other dragon alive. The girl was afraid when Master Lan decides to get rid of the dead dragon by pickling it. She knows that if you pickling the imperial dragon would mean death if the absent Emperor ever found out. The girl slowly became friends with the dragon. But one day the girl greeted an unexpected visit of the emperor. She accidentally ends up secretly watching an imperial banquet and overhears the Emperor discussion making a deal with a greedy dragon hunter named Diao. The girl witnesses the emperor and the wife unknowingly tasting some of the dragon pickle. The girls rescue the last dragon with Hua the rat and went on a journey away from the palace. The dragon name Long Danzi tells her true was Ping. So Ping and Danzi must go on an dangerous journey across the China to the ocean and go to a magical healing place away from the hunter Diao. Ping must protect a mysterious stone that is vital to the dragon’s legacy. The hunter and Necromancer who are determined to kill the dragon and take the dragon stone to sell it for money are chasing Ping and the dragon. While Ping and Danzi traveled together, Ping learned many things to help her with her struggle. She also learned the value of friendship, courage, and discovers her destiny as a dragon keeper. The Necromancer and the hunter took the dragon stone. Danzi shows ping how to focus the Qi Power and manage to find the stone and get it back. While traveling to the Ocean they went through a lot of obstacle. Once they were there at the ocean the stone was starting to crack but Danzi didn’t care. The stone cracks open and a baby dragon came out. Danzi and Hua were very injured and need to help Danzi. Danzi tells Ping if he fly’s himself and Hua to a special place they will heal. Before Danzi leave, he gives the baby name and he named it Long Kai Duan. Ping is now left alone with the baby dragon.

Dragon

...Dragon Name Dragon The word dragon entered the English language in the early 13th century from Old French dragon, which in turn comes from Latin draconem (nominative draco) meaning "huge serpent, dragon", from the Greek word δράκων, drakon (genitive drakontos, δράκοντος) "serpent, giant seafish". The Greek and Latin term referred to any great serpent, not necessarily mythological, and this usage was also current in English up to the 18th century. Morphology A dragon is a mythological representation of a reptile. In antiquity, dragons were mostly envisaged as serpents, but since the Middle Ages, it has become common to depict them with legs, resembling a lizard. Dragons are usually shown in modern times with a body like a huge lizard, or a snake with two pairs of lizard-type legs, and able to emit fire from their mouths. The European dragon has bat-like wings growing from its back. A dragon-like creature with wings but only a single pair of legs is known as a wyvern. Comparative mythology Further information: Chaoskampf, Sea serpent, Proto-Indo-European religion § Dragon or Serpent and Serpent (Bible) The association of the serpent with a monstrous opponent overcome by a heroic deity has its roots in the mythology of the Ancient Near East, including Canaanite (Hebrew, Ugaritic), Hittite and Mesopotamian. Beowulf

...Name: Institution: Course: Date: The role of violence in the world of Beowulf In the poem, Beowulf is an aging king who wears the identity of a warrior has different faces according to the situation at the moment. The poet describes Beowulf as “ greater/ and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world” implying that he was a strong man but still as any human being, he was mortal (Warsh et. al., 8). Violence in the poem is surfacing as a tool to venerate superiority. The poet explains Beowulf’s anxiety to battle Grendel but still exuding courtesy, diplomacy and patience. However, the battle that he craves for, is only possiblen after he gets permission from Hrothgar “Beowulf-anxious to meet with Hrothgar, from whom he hopes to receive permission to battle Grendel- is courteous, patient, and diplomatic”. This explanation also shows that violence is a measure of power and superiority but there are limits that a person is confined that makes them to give respect to people. In this case, Beowulf respects the boundary that he cannot fight Grendel until he gets permission from Hrothgar (Warsh et. al.,8). The aim of Beowulf wanting to battle Grendel could be a way of proving his heroism to gain prominence, amassing wealth or helping people. The poet writes“What does Beowulf want? Is he motivated to perform heroic acts simply by a need to help other people? Or is he interested mainly in accumulating as much wealth as possible?. It implies that Beowulf wants the battle to gain either...

Born or Not to Born in Dragon Years

...students, and hope that we will all fly like dragons this year, guys I am extremely surprised with the news that this year is going to see an exponential rise in the birthrate in Asian nations, typically, China and Vietnam for the belief that any child who comes in being in this special period is endowed with a lucky life. For years, dragon has been regarded a legendary animal and associated with power, activeness, superiority and other good traits. Hoping that their off-springs to have the same life as the dragons’, millions of young couples try their utmost to have babies and problems, however, remain that the population explosion might happen. According to several experts, this rage is likely to result in a gloomy picture, though. First of all, that people think children are born this year are lucky purely originates from the unfounded belief, without any empirical research. Second, as they grow up, ready to take the entrance exams and seeking for jobs, competition between babies of this year escalates ceaselessly. The higher unemployment rate on the horizon is imminent, let alone probably an increased crime rate and the shortage of housing. Perhaps, to people working in the real estate, this could be a positive signal, as a result of the fact that the demand for housing during that epoch is on the climb, pushing the price to the rocket and greatly benefiting them while their parents who dedicate their lives to buying houses for their dragon-year-born children are dissatisfied....

Cruelty

...Cruelty The prophet David from the Bible who spoke of false accusations people make, an angry dragon from Scandinavia whose fury could not be withheld, and a man who knows the brutality of human nature. Though all different situations, they share a common theme, cruelty. Cruelty in gossip, cruelty in temper, and cruelty in nature. Cruelty can be found in all types of literature even as old as the Bible. “Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up risen up against me, and such as breath out cruelty” (Psalms 27:12). This quote is asking God not to let us give into our enemies, and for us to not believe the brutality of people’s false accusations. The prophet David was the one who conveyed this quote. By speaking out about the cruelty of people he is indirectly saying that God is the only person you need to seek approval from. He is also saying that no one else’s words or savageness should matter. Though David’s message is centuries old, it proves that a verse, or phrase can contain the same significance even centuries later. Only decades later cruelty was still evident with World War II and the Nazis, and in modern day situations such as terrorism. Many other works of literature are also proof of this same idea. One example of a piece of literature that conveys cruelty well is the story of Beowulf. “And the signs of its anger flickered and glowed in the darkness, visible for miles tokens of its hate and its cruelty...

Fiction

...PROLOGUE Fortress of the Light Pedron Niall's aged gaze wandered about his private audience chamber, but dark eyes hazed with thought saw nothing. Tattered wall hangings, once battle banners of the enemies of his youth, faded into dark wood paneling laid over stone walls, thick even here in the heart of the Fortress of the Light. The single chair in the room heavy, high-backed, and almost a throne - was as invisible to him as the few scattered tables that completed the furnishings. Even the white-cloaked man kneeling with barely restrained eagerness on the great sunburst set in the wide planks of the floor had vanished from Niall's mind for the moment, though few would have dismissed him so lightly. Jaret Byar had been given time to wash before being brought to Niall, but both his helmet and his breastplate were dulled from travel and battered from use. Dark, deep-set eyes shone with a feverish, urgent light in a face that seemed to have had every spare scrap of flesh boiled away. He wore no sword - none was allowed in Niall's presence - but he seemed poised on the edge of violence, like a hound awaiting the loosing of the leash. Twin fires on long hearths at either end of the room held off the late winter cold. It was a plain, soldier's room, really, everything well made but nothing extravagant except for the sunburst. Furnishings came to the audience chamber of the Lord Captain Commander of the Children of the Light with the man who rose to the office; the...

Drangons Tale

...In Dragon’s Tail, Andrew Charlton explores the supercharged rise of China and considers Australia’s future as the Chinese dragon stirs and shifts. China’s rise has been perhaps the most significant economic event in two centuries, occurring 100 times more quickly and on a scale 1000 times larger than Britain’s Industrial Revolution. Since 2000, Australia has been an essential part of this transformation, providing the raw materials to feed China’s frantic manufacture of steel vertebrae for everything from cars and trucks to railways, apartments and office towers. China’s appetite for resources has made us richer than ever before, but it has also drained the competitiveness from many parts of our economy, leaving us vulnerable. In Dragon’s Tail, Andrew Charlton shows that China’s growth model is now reaching its limit, and the world’s most populous economy faces a challenging transition. Whether China crashes, or crashes through, this will have dramatic implications for Australia, slowing the demand for our resources and forcing us to reassess the foundations of our wealth. Charlton looks at ways to revitalise the Australian economy and secure our prosperity in a changing world. “Understanding China’s growth model helps explain why australia has done so well in the twenty-first century. But it also explains why, at the same time, our economic anxiety is reaching a zenith: why holden is leaving, why the budget is in such an apparent quagmire, why house prices are soaring...

Dragon

...30 January 2012 Asian Dragons Vs European Dragons Whether you live in Vietnam, China, Japan, Scotland, USA or anywhere in the world, you have probably heard of the dragons-the animal of imagination of human. A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, that feature in the myths of many cultures. There are two distinct cultural traditions of dragons: the European dragon, derived from European folk traditions and ultimately related to Greek and Middle Eastern mythologies, and the Asian dragon, with counterparts in Japan, Korea and other East Asian countries. Since I was a kid, dragons have always been a mystery and an attraction for me .I have spent a lot of time to study about them and found out that there are three general differences between the dragon from the east and the west which are appearance, symbolism and what they mean to society . First of all, the easily identifiable difference between an Asian dragon and a European one is the appearance. Asian dragons resemble large snakes. They look like a combination of many animals such as snakes and eagles, and had no wings. For Chinese, each one of its four short legs had five toes while a Japanese dragon has three and a Korean one has four. Even though depicted without wings the Asian dragon is believed to fly. They are often in red and gold. Unlike the Asian, the European typically depicted their dragons as a huge fire-breathing scaly and horned dinosaur-like creature with bat-type wings...
