“Driving to the Funeral” is a writing from Anna Quindlen that talks about how too many teens are dying from car crashes. The purpose of this writing is to inform the readers about how too many teen drivers are being killed by car crashes. The main point of this writing is to inform the readers that it is better to raise the legal driving age up because teens are not ready to drive at the age of sixteen. The audience of this selection is intended for adults, because it is used a lot of hard facts and emotional appeal of how teen drivers are endangered of driving. They are endangered of driving because they are not mentally ready to drive and should wait more time until they are actually ready to handle the responsibility of driving. For an …show more content…
The first hard evidence was a fact about how the number one cause of death for fifteen year olds through twenty year olds are car crashes. The author also showed the many requirements that states require young drivers to do. Some of the requirements were that you can only drink alcohol when they are twenty-one. Also there are other requirements like young drivers can’t drive after a certain time and that they can’t provide rides to their peers. But requirements like these aren’t strictly enforce so many teens do not listen to these rules. She proved this by showing a statistic that’s said between 2004 through 2006 only twelve teens were ticketed in new jersey for carrying too many passengers. Another statistic that she used was that more than one third of 16-year-old drivers were involved in serious accidents. Furthermore, she used emotional appeal to make the adults agree onto her side. For an example she said “perhaps the only ones who wouldn’t make a fuss are those parents who have accepted diplomas at graduation because their children were no longer alive to do so

Take a Stand Essay

... Take a Stand: Elderly Driving There are many drivers on the road today which are half made up of the elderly population. There comes a time in every elder’s life when they aren’t quite competent enough to drive themselves around anymore. It’s a time of question of their own independence and their keys. Some pose a hazard for not only themselves on the road, but also pose a hazard for the other pedestrians and drivers on the road as well. There are many who still can drive safely and still have their competencies about them, but determining if an elder should be driving can be hard to judge just by the family. The elder should be judged by not only their family but should also be overseen by a licensed individual like a doctor or a judge. There are just as many capable elderly drivers as there aren’t. Most of the elder population suffers from slight dementia and problems with eye sight. They also sometimes lose their sense of direction and can get lost easily. Having an elder driving who isn’t quit all there doesn’t thrill anyone, but letting them behind the wheel of a car can be dangerous. If they have issues with their sight or sense of direction it can pose a real hazard for the other drivers on the road and it can cause a hazard for them. The last thing anyone needs is to have their elder lost or hurt in a car accident that could have been avoided by just simply taking some time and sitting and evaluating if that elder should still be driving Having something happen...

...it ends and to move forward with living. Stokes Mortuary will have facilities that bring families and communities together to remember the life of the deceased and renew bonds of social support. Because 71 percent of people choose a mortuary based on reputation, the key to success is quickly establishing a reputation for the community to celebrate life when they die. The mortuary’s cornerstone will be its reception facilities. These open and spacious rooms will promote uplifting interactions after the funeral and may also be used for nonprofit organizations. This will make the mortuary more of a community center, which will uplift, connect it to the community, provide the basis for publicity, and make it a center for the living. The reception room and website will feature digital photos and audio of the persons whose lives are being celebrated. This web presence will increase the center's exposure by letting people participate in the celebration of life after the funeral and reception are over. Providing the greatest choice of quality caskets and headstones will make the center the place to celebrate the lives of locally prominent persons. This will foster publicity and further promote our reputation. Stokes Mortuary currently has a website but is seeking to expand the current information, features and products available on line. Viability The decision to be on the internet came many years ago. It was an easy decision to make. Before technology came along, the mortuary...

5 People You Meet in Heaven Literary Analysis

...Tyler Dunaway The Five People You Meet in Heaven Literary Analysis The story The Five People You Meet in Heaven was a detailed and entertaining story, it was written by Mitch Albom. The main character is Eddie and most of the story is written about what happened after Eddie dies in a tragic accident. He learns five lessons about not just his life bur life in general, as he meets five people whose lives intertwined with his. From sacrifice to forgiveness Eddie learns that every life has an important meaning and purpose just as much as a persons death. So in this literary analysis I will be dissecting and critiquing this book using characterization, theme, and the authors use of the literary device of irony. In the book Mitch give Eddie many character traits that make him a very round protagonist. An example of these traits is Eddie’s heroism. Eddie is heroic because there are at least three times that Eddie tries to save someone else's. In the process of saving someone's life he puts thoughts of his own life aside. One of the times Eddie tries to save someone's life is when he tries to save the little girl from the piers life. This heroic action cost Eddie his life. The second time he tries to save someone's life is when he is in the Philippines and him and his comrades are being held hostage and are in the mines while Rabozzo was sick. Their captors were messing with him while Eddie tried stopping them “He’s sick!” Eddie yelled, struggling to his feet. Crazy Two slammed...

Post War El Salvador Summary

...(1500)A Book Review of Everyday Revolutionaries: Gender, Violence, and Disillusionment in Post-War El Salvador by Irina Carlota Silber (300)This book review defines the continued violence and social destabilization that is found in El Salvador in Everyday Revolutionaries: Gender, Violence, and Disillusionment in Post-War El Salvador by Irina Carlota Silber. Silber’s argument is founded on the premise that the post-war culture of El Salvador continues to project a violent “revolutionary” environment, which has made many of the women that fought in the revolution the “subjects” of neoliberal globalization. In this manner, many of the “revolutionaries” are examined through an anthropological gender analysis to identify the reactionary nature of post-war identity that continues to divide communities and also creates the “trans-border” family. More so, Silber (2010) argues that many women are presented as being symbolized as “masculinized” women, but the underlying patriarchal values of El Salvadoran society continue into the post-war era. Therefore, the issue of gender roles continues define some of the myths of “feminism” that have been historically defined as part of the women’s movement in the FMNL during the revolution....

Literary Analysis On The Great Gatsby

...A Analysis is the practice of looking closely at small parts to see how they affect the whole, but a Literary analysis focuses on how plot plus structure, character, setting, and many other techniques. That's what I intend to achieve in this essay about The Great Gatsby. In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts the theme of wealth can breed carelessness in my own opinion. Using the literary techniques of point of view, juxtaposition, and foreshadowing to create meaning in his classic work. The word “careless” sums up Nick's friends as I think and also what the author says in the book himself. For example I feel like Gatsby’s whole life trying to contract his money and status so that he could reach a certain position in life. This is what motivated him to move to west egg to be right across the lake from Daisy, making as much money by doing anything possible. I felt in his position Daisy wanted and needed a man that was wealthy so he changed himself to win her back. At a point him and Daisy were perfect for eachother when he was unwealthy, but their affair foreshadowed that it was a doomed relationship showing that she only wanted him for his money now. As we can see now, the relationship was never doomed at the end for Daisy as she runs away, as her secondary lover dies. Another...

...Syllabus SNYDER v. PHELPS ET AL. CERTIORARI TO THE UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE FOURTH CIRCUIT No. 09–751. Argued October 6, 2010—Decided March 2, 2011 For the past 20 years, the congregation of the Westboro Baptist Church has picketed military funerals to communicate its belief that God hates the United States for its tolerance of homosexuality, particularly in America’s military. The church’s picketing has also condemned the Catholic Church for scandals involving its clergy. Fred Phelps, who founded the church, and six Westboro Baptist parishioners (all relatives of Phelps) traveled to Maryland to picket the funeral of Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq in the line of duty. The picketing took place on public land approximately 1,000 feet from the church where the funeral was held, in accordance with guidance from local law enforcement officers. The picketers peacefully displayed their signs—stating, e.g., “Thank God for Dead Soldiers,” “Fags Doom Nations,” “America is Doomed,” “Priests Rape Boys,” and “You’re Going to Hell”—for about 30 minutes before the funeral began. Matthew Snyder’s father (Snyder), petitioner here, saw the tops of the picketers’ signs when driving to the funeral, but did not learn what was written on the signs until watching a news broadcast later that night. Snyder filed a diversity action against Phelps, his daughters—who participated in the...

Daisy's Responsibility In The Great Gatsby

...attempt to take any responsibility for herself. When he is killed by Myrtle's husband, Wilson, she doesn’t bother to even make an appearance at her former lover’s funeral, something that she causes. Instead, she flees from the city with her family and deserts the event. This was her final act of deceit. She continues to preserve herself no matter what. As said in Robert Ornstein’s analysis, ““In Daisy’s case the answer is simple. We remember that Nick Carraway has described Gatsby’s personality as an “unbroken series of successful gestures.” Superficially, Daisy finds in Gatsby, or thinks she finds, that safety from human reality which the empty gesture implies.” (Scott Fitzgerald’s Fable of East and West.” 2016) Daisy was never truly in love with Gatsby. Similar to him, she was in love with the idea of a man who would grant her freedom and an escape from the rest of her life. She couldn’t love him forever, as much as she or Gatsby may have wanted her...

Death of a Salesman

...Mr. Hoeben ENG 102 10 December 2013 The Failed American Dream: Analysis of Death of a Salesman A tragedy play is a source of drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to extreme suffer or sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with lack of approval or support. Arthur Miller’s tragedy play, Death of a Salesman can be viewed as a urology of a man who was a constant dreamer, which represents his life and tragic death as he tries to fulfill his visions of having the American Dream. American tragedy explores the great myths that govern a society by examining the lives of its most ordinary citizens. Miller vividly expresses ideas throughout his play by demonstrating a changing society. Also, reading Death of a Salesman allows the play to be psychologically viewed as one man’s journey from shame and his own lack of self-confidence. Arthur Miller portrays Willy, his family, and other characters situation by the use of symbolism and themes, he accurately puts into words what every human being thinks, feels, and worries about, but often has trouble expressing. The Moment Before the Gun Went Off

...LITERARY ANALYSIS - THE MOMENT BEFORE THE GUN WENT OFF It wasn’t easy to be black during apartheid in South Africa. And though the whites were superior to the blacks, one moment can make your life as white turn from being a good life into a terrible life. ‘The Moment Before the Gun Went Off’ is a short story written by the South African short story writer and novelist, Nadine Gordimer, and it is published in Harper’s in 1991. The main plot in the short story is about a white man, Marais Van der Vyver, who by an accident shoots one of his farm labourers, Lucas, while they are out hunting. Marais and Lucas were driving in a truck on a dirt track; Marais was in the car, and Lucas stood on the back of the truck to look for kudus. Marais had a riffle beside him in the truck, and unfortunately, the gun was loaded. In the same moment as a kudu passed Lucas’ sight, Marais drove over a pothole, and the jolt fired the rifle. The bullet went trough the roof of the truck and straight into the head of Lucas. This became the last moment of Lucas’ life. Marais Van der Vyver is an Afrikaner farmer, leader of the regional party and Commandant of the local security commando. He is in his late thirties and he has three children, Magnus, Helena and Karel, and a wife, Alida. He is the son of Willem Van der Vyver, and he inherited his father’s best farm. Marais takes really good care of the farm, but he is a white man in a community where both withes and blacks are settled, so he has, as many...
