DUBSTEP

Dubstep

...Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London, England. Its overall sound is described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals". The earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998 and were darker, more experimental, instrumental dub remixes of 2-step garage tracks. Dubstep tried to transform drum and bass into 2-step, which featured as B-sides of single releases. In 2001, this and other strains of dark garage music began to be showcased and promoted at London's night club Plastic People, at the "Forward" night, which went on to be considerably influential to the development of dubstep. The term "dubstep" in reference to a genre of music began to be used by around 2002 by labels such as Big Apple, Ammunition and Tempa, by which time the trends used in creating these remixes started to become more well known and distinct from 2-step and grime. DJ John Peel, who started playing it from 2003 onwards, made dubstep popular in South London by playing it on his radio station. He also made many dubstep artists popular by playing their music on his radio station, which made people demand that they produce more songs and created more artists looking to reap the benefit of the growing dubstep craze. Dubstep started to spread beyond small local scenes in late 2005 and early 2006 to many websites that were devoted to the genre, which appeared on the internet and aided the...

...Making a Dubstep song A lot people have either heard a dubstep song or know of at least one. Some people like them, but some don't. Hearing these songs I always wondered how hard is it to make one. It turns out having free time, computer skills, and some rhythm are all you need, well some computer First you'll need some great to get started. The first thing you need is a computer. A lot of dubstep is the sound effects. You need a fast computer with a lot of memory. If you want a Mac, make sure it has 1.8 GHz, with an Intel Processor 2-4 GB of RAM and is OSX 10.5 or later. If you want a PC, make sure it has 2GHz Pentium or Celeron processor 2-4 GB or RAM Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 a sound card with ASIO driver support. Next you'll need a music software, my favorite is GarageBand. The music software is used to prepare tracks, sample songs, mix and record. Other popular software is Fruity Loops, Cakewalk Sonar, and Renoise. You should strongly consider adding external hardware to the setup. Having a basic USB mic on hand to record vocals or raps is a good idea and good way to create new sounds to use. If you're at all interested in incorporating original found sounds or acoustic elements and manipulating them in your dubstep music, a solid microphone is a good idea. The next step is to learn about your equipment. Playing with the instruments you have on your computer can be a good way to familiarize yourself with...

...forbidden sounds of jazz and swing,” which was “music banned by the Nazis during their occupation of France” (1). These nightclubs became part of North American culture following World War II and gained traction in the 1970s. The popularity of disco music led to the branching out of the musical style into house and electro, which then formed techno, a party music that rapidly gained popularity in underground raves throughout the U.S. and U.K. “None of these styles or signatures would last very long on their own, but combined they slowly began to create a new generation of music fans willing to give dance music a shot” (1). With the former rock star Skillrex’s dubstep and David Guetta’s house music driving their sounds into the mainstream music industry, the umbrella term EDM emerged in the 2000s. Subgenres of EDM include dubstep, trance, electro, hardcore, trap, drum and bass, and many more. This aspect of diversity with so many different subgenres within the genre makes EDM so popular, unparalleled in the music industry. Zac claims that once this type of music became available to a vast audience, the music festival scene brought it to the forefront of American culture. While people might not have listened to EDM previously, music festivals gave those people a taste of the electric sound even if they were at the festival to listen to a rock or hip-hop artist. Now, the music festival with the largest daily attendance is the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, a primarily EDM event...

...For those of you who suffered mini-aneurysms when you didn't see Skrillex or Boyz Noise’s names on the artist list, have no fear, they will be at Electric Zoo 2013 better than ever. Performing as Dog Blood on Friday night at Riverside stage, this set is sure to attract all of the real fans that love quality EDM. Boyz Noise and Skrilly's work on side project Dog Blood has propelled the duo to the top of OWLSA's roster, and the to the top of my lineup list this year. Deviating from the commercial success of their two individual names, Dog Blood has become a music sanctuary for both to get back to their roots and explore a different genre. Rooted in both techno and house, Dog Blood's style also incorporates many heavier, dubstep elements. Often classified under acid house, Dog Blood’s sound is definitely very unique from other artists of equal acknowledgement. Since their creation in 2012, Dog Blood has come a long way from their not-so-quite humble beginnings. Their very first single, “Next Order”, very quickly made it to the top of Beatport’s techno charts. After a very busy period between both Skrillex and Boyz Noise towards the end of 2012, Dog Blood emerged from its hiatus to throw down the house at Ultra 2013, casually releasing a few singles including the smash success “Wild For The Night” remix with A$AP Rocky. Since then, they’ve played EDC Vegas, Glastonbury Festival, and now the pinnacle, Electric Zoo. We’ll be seeing you at the stage of these two geniuses on Friday...

Rap Research Paper

...“Walk This Way” to “The Show Goes On”: The Progression of Rap Compared to other genres of music, rap is considered to be pretty new. Rap, or hip-hop, is constantly evolving, as do other types of music. Rap is simply described as, “talking in rhyme to the rhythm of a beat” (Hip Hop). When rap was getting started, it only consisted of DJs mixing some beats together along with beat boxing and sampling other songs. As the years went on, people decided to rap over the beats and create a perfect rap song. Some rappers are lyrical geniuses, while others make music purely for a good party song. The radio does not do a good job of playing a variety of rap, now a days mainstream rap that is only good for dancing is being played on the radio. Mainstream rap, to some, would not be considered good music purely because the lyrics are extremely basic. Artists like Run-DMC first started the phenomena, Tupac and Biggie Smalls made rap extremely popular, and present day rappers like Lupe Fiasco keep advancing the music. Run-DMC was not the first rapper to start, but he is a big reason why rap is so popular today. Run-DMC was a hip-hop group located in Queens, New York, and is widely known to be the most influential acts in the history of the hip-hop culture. They were the first group in the genre to have a gold album, and to be nominated to the Grammy Awards. In 1982, Run-DMC released “Sucker MCs” which was a huge hit. Allison Smith illustrates, “This blast of rhythmic minimalism...

...Electric Music The flashing lights, the bang of the bass, and the sweat pouring down my arms. The smell of the sketchy club that will be the stomping ground for the night and the huge amount of people within my view, moving similarly to an uneasy sea. I’ve lost all track of time; my legs have been in constant motion along with my fellow ravers for what feels like days. Techno is the one thing that draws everyone here, as if we were bees being drawn to a flower, the music is the nectar of our ears. We are drawn techno, a type of music that is very misunderstood. Techno is music created using synthesizers and other electronic instruments. Techno- electric music and raves; when many hear these words they most likely think of an underground club that is filled with drugs and drunk kids. This perception has been hanging over this scene for some time now. It seems that has all started to change. This once frowned upon practice referred to as raving and the music that accompanies this event, called techno, is now generally accepted. Now not only young people enjoy this music, a lot of middle- aged people do as well. Today it appears that this once dark practice is now coming to light. This once dark practice has been growing in popularity among the young people for a little over fifteen years. With this rise in popularity comes more than just acceptance. The rave scene needs two things; a DJ and a location. Generally a traditional DJ would take a request for a song, or throw their...
