The society we live in today is so different than that of World War II. In that era the biggest threat of destroying society was the atomic bomb. In these times of today we face so many different threats of terrorism from other countries and from within our own cities. Even more than just terrorism, today’s society faces some many threats from within itself, such as Ganges in the inner cities, to the fall of inner city government through the influence from the sales of illegal drugs. The survival of a nuclear act was and all ways will be one of society’s main concerns. The atomic boom was the center of fear because, the technology had just been discovered and other countries had the technology in their hands as will. The U.S. had no real protection for the people from being acted by other countries, for the most part it was a wait and see game played with the threats between two countries. It seem to have such an impact on the people of that time it changed their life styles, from saving money for the further too the build and stocking boom shelters in their back yards. Comparing the threat nuclear war to the threat of terrorism today is different in many was in that terrorism has many different faces. Today’s terrorism comes not only from other countries but also comes from within the U.S. from some of our own people. Like the students of World War II, the students of today are still being taught to duck and cover, not for the fear of a boom but for the fear of a fellow student are someone with a cause, coming into the class and shooting it up. Technology has grown so much society of today really has no fear from other countries but more from the terrorism within the U.S... For some children of today duck and cover is practice in their own homes trying to stay

...Duck and Cover Name Date Instructor HIS/145 Duck and Cover Duck and Cover is a film that was used to show children the steps they needed to take in the event of a nuclear attack. It shows children to find a space, such as under their desk, to hide under and to cover the back of their necks with their hands to protect themselves. The film also talks about seeking cover in designated shelters if they are not at school or at home. Also discussed is the fact that there may not be a warning siren, though it is expected there will be. The idea was to educate children about the possibility of an attack and how, it was thought to be, the best way to they could protect themselves. Living Under the Threat of Nuclear War Living under the threat of nuclear war must have been an extremely stressful experience. To live life in constant fear that a nuclear bomb could detonate at a moments notice would cause anxiety and fear, making many people fearful of leaving the (perceived) safety of their homes. This must have been especially true for children that may not have fully been able to comprehend the threat. In the comments section of the video, one viewer wrote “I used to have nightmares about the "Bomb" when I was a kid. It was such a nebulous but terrifying thing. In school we had this sort of "duck and cover" propaganda complete with drills and explanations about the "bright flash", etc. As a child, one of my big fears was that this...

...Duck and Cover Santana Ludos HIS/145 March 10, 2014 Paul Mole Duck and Cover  “Duck and Cover” is a film created to teach children how to duck and cover in the case of a nuclear attack on United States soil. The film features a cartoon turtle that shows children to duck and cover during a nuclear strike. I think the film shows the mentality that the United States was expecting a retaliation bombing for the use of nuclear weapons on Nagasaki during World War II. The feeling must have been beyond frightening to believe the threat was so high that they needed to teach their children of as young as six years old how to react to a nuclear strike.  The fear that our enemies can hurt us on our own soil without warning left our country feeling many emotions such as vulnerable and angry all at once. The United States felt fear of retaliation that our enemies would strike us on our own soil.   The fear was so great that they felt the need to teach everyone how to react to a nuclear attack.   The face of war changed when we dropped the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It showed the world that we had the most powerful weapon in the world, so powerful it ends wars.   The terrorist attacks on 9/11 caused so much fear that the United States declared war on terror but nobody saw it coming. We as a country vowed to never be that vulnerable again but in my opinion it still seems as if no certain drastic measures have been taken to be better prepared for another attack on U.S. soil...

...Duck and Cover Duck and Cover After the discharge of the original atomic bombs, many Americans were elated that World War II was at an end. As additional research was conducted about the effects and power of atomic bombs, anxiety began to move throughout the United States. But when the first atomic bomb was tested by the Soviet Union in 1949, anxiety turned to terror and alarm. To alleviate Americans’ fears, the U.S. Government created films that shed light on the characteristics and showed practices for persisting an atomic attack. Duck and Cover, a movie, was presented to school aged children starting in 1950. This film featured a cartoon turtle with a jovial theme song, and sound advice. Duck and Cover was supposed to reassure children that they would know what to do, in the event of an atomic strike. Instead of reassuring the kids, pictures of little Billy fleeing to the basement, it convinced youngsters that the atomic shells could drop at any time and gave them bad dreams. The government’s theory during this juncture was that atomic could be used as part of a “conventional” battle between America and Mother Russia. If that occurred, America would need to continue the manufacturing of war products. Large cities would surely be targets, and in the occasion of evacuation, cities would be gridlocked. Citizens of American were advised to formulate plans for potential nuclear occurrence, to recognize what to do and where to go if the air raid sirens ever went off. With...

...Duck and Cover Nuclear warfare was something that could damage all of civilization within a wide area, to know that a bomb could be set off and at anytime with no knowledge of when is a little scary. I would personally want to have some kind of idea so that I could protect my family in some form or fashion. In the video duck and cover watching the kids walking down the street and the bomb going off is scary. The video was a good form of teaching children and parents how to protect themselves if a nuclear bomb was to be set off. When terrorism struck the people had no idea of what was happening. The fact that a person or group of people considers hurting the innocent is wrong. The people that were killed in the 9-11 attack were just innocent by standers that were targeted because one person was upset with something that a past president had done. I personally think that a problem should be resolved in a different way other than violence. Terrorism threats and nuclear war are both dangerous to civilization. They both hurt and destroy innocent people and things. Unlike terrorism threats a nuclear bomb can destroy a wide variety of things and can affect civilization longer because of radiation being released, terrorist threats like 9-11 can destroy a variety of things like a nuclear bomb but it takes more than just one bomb. Terrorist threats can also affect civilization for a long period of time also, the people that lose family members can never get over that pain no matter what...

...Duck and Cover Hist/415 03/03/2014 James Fennessy Duck and Cover There are many questions in today’s society vs. the era of the nuclear bomb. Back during the cold war, it must have been brutal just thinking about a nuclear bomb dropping on us. Imagine being a child, and constantly having the fear of possibly being in the path of a nuclear bomb. The adults were just as afraid and nervous for the lives and those of their children as well. The government was always looking at nuclear weapons and showed its power with the bombing of Hiroshima during August 6, 1945. (Rosenburg, n.d.) With the knowledge that our country has today, and thinking of a nuclear war, no one could imagine living through one in this day and age. However, the threat of the nuclear confrontation is somewhat similar today. A nuclear war is very similar to the threat we see today with terrorism. Both of these threats can lead to a lot of mental issues, economic issues, and political issues. Not to mention the amount of stress of conflict has on the American psyche. The threat of terrorist attacks is immediate, but the nuclear threat does still loom. Although, both are dangerous, terrorists attacks are typically the explosion of buildings, bridges, and other highly populated areas. Nuclear attacks can decimate continents, and wide ranges of area. Terrorist attacks are normally minor compared to the attack of a nuclear weapon. Since the bombing of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, we still suspect...

...Duck and Cover When looking at the video duck and, it have the appearance of as though America were very afraid of being by the nuclear bomb. They learn to be precaution and reassured everyone that there were ways to be protected when a bombing should amass. It looks as if like the government put out this video out to give the people a piece of mind, so that they would not be in a panic or rage of it happing to any them. When showing this to the threat of terrorism some of the similarities were the panic and the damage to the land as well as damage to the people emotionally. I do not really think that it was many differences between the two. If only two well-armed countries are involved in the melancholy encounter, and’’ if each set off less than 10 percent of its total nuclear arsenal over the other's largest cities, the mildest conceivable outcome is 35 million dead and 10 million seriously injured in each country, with one-half the total industrial capacity of each side destroyed. Our main enemy would be Russia in the attack if we were to go head to head’’. This video tells the story that America will protect their country no matter what the problems. I look at the story as a learn matter. I remember in middle school we used to have the drills all the time for fire, hurricane, and bomb attack, just in case anything happen. I understand why Government felled that we as a nation need to know this matter can save life. This was a great motto for adult and children. I would...

...I started school in the early 1995 and I remember doing drills to prepare us just in case an attack may occur. I can remember evacuation drills to the school auditorium, and how each grade had their own area in which they would meet. Although I did not experience living under the fear of a nuclear war I believe that living under the fear of terrorists attacks are very similar. I was very young so I did not take the drills too seriously because I was not fully aware of all the dangerous things that can happen suddenly. I remember being in the 5th grade and hearing the school alarms go off and every student was to report to the school auditorium like we had practiced every week. We were then sent home early and I remember turning on the television and seeing the explosion caused by the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. I panicked because my father was working in Manhattan at the time and I did not know how close he was to the attack. From that day on I knew the importance of drills. I also began to experience living in fear of a terrorist attack. The threat of nuclear war and the threat of terrorism are similar in that it causes American citizens anxiety and stress because nobody wants to die before they have to. The threat of nuclear war would most likely have a precursor, such as a situation like the Korean War or the Cuban Missile Crisis, and so it would possibly be expected. With terrorism, nobody knows when, or how terrorists are going to strike and so it is very hard...

...“We are all fragile creatures entwined in a cobweb of social constraints”. These are words that were spoken by social psychologist, Stanley Milgram. The “constraints’ that he was speaking of were social norms. Social norms are defined as the “rules that regulate social life”. (Chambliss & Eglitis, 2016, p 332) Social norms can vary from written law to cultural understanding of acceptable behaviors. Everything that we do is governed by a social norm in some way. Take for example greeting someone when you are being introduced for the first time. There is no law stating that you must make eye contact and shake their hand. If you decided not to, it would be considered rude. It is also a social norm in our culture to stand in line in public places rather than expecting immediate service. When I was considering where to conduct my observation, I wanted to choose a location where there would be multiple norms to observe and then later violate. I decided on a local café and deli in the business distract of downtown Cincinnati. Since the observation was taking place in the business district, I decided that lunch time would be the best time to do it. I started at 12 o’clock Thursday. The café is located on the ground level of apartment building that was built in the late 1800’s. The entire front side of the store is floor to celling glass, letting in a ton of natural light. There is only one entrance and one exit. Once inside to the right of the entrance is the deli, where all...

...Duck and Cover Arzetta Grays His/145 April 5, 2012 Michael Breakey When reviewing the video duck and cover, it would seem as though we were just as afraid of being attacked. So in precaution we reassured everyone that there were ways to be protected when a bombing should accrue. It looks as if like the government put out this video out to give the people a piece of mind, so that they would not be in a panic or rage of it happing to them. Even with the smallest bit of since people should realize that crouching down in a ball is not going to help you out in no shape or form from a nuclear bomb. The Movement of Wives

...Duck and Cover HIS 145 Duck and Cover The Duck and Cover video created in 1951 focuses on teaching children how to protect themselves from the effects of nuclear explosion from the 1950s, until the end of the Cold War in the 1980s. It is introduced by a cartoon turtle Bert, who demonstrates duck and cover by stopping and covering his body with his shell. It served a great purpose of teaching children who may not be under direct adult supervision when the nuclear bomb attack occurred and needed to be educated on personal safety until they were with adults to guide them. It remains in memory today. At the time people living in the United States were told to remain on guard in case an explosion occurred. The time to duck and cover was when a siren was heard, along with an extremely bright flash of light. Children were taught to duck in a safe area near a wall or in a doorway. Covering includes using one’s hands to cover his or her head, neck and face. It is similar to terrorism today, because weapons of mass destruction remain a threat. We are still faced with the possibility of war with other countries. It continues to affect individuals of the U.S. as well as the land. Destruction and reconstruction is capable of remains was and remains a fear. Differences between the nuclear war threats and today’s threats are related to the increase of extreme levels that take place today. Plane bombings and chemical terrorisms have occurred in recent years. There was no warning...

Cold War and Communism

...Coney Teacher: William Pope Watching the duck and cover video makes you wonder, would a person want to live during the time when there was a nuclear war. There could be a nuclear warning at any time and you would have to find an area to duck and cover away from any windows. If there was a flash you just need to duck and cover as soon as possible to protect yourself. Living under a nuclear war would be very stressful having to have an open ear and be on the watch out all the time. Nuclear war is a war when nuclear weapons are used by both sides. Terrorism is a hunt to harm or murder innocent people with no one person being a target. The similarities would be you do not really have time to prepare for either a nuclear war or a terrorist attack. When the terrorist attacked the Twin Towers in New York on 9/11/01 I was in middle school. Remembering back on that day many innocent people were killed and hurt by not knowing that this was going to happen. These people had no time to prepare for the event. The differences are that the nuclear wars are usually done by a country, and terrorist attacks are usually done by people of certain religious groups. In conclusion ask yourself which one of these would you want to live under? Most people would not want to live under neither. If you were to hear a warning are to see a flash of light you know to duck and cover to protect yourself. If there was a terrorist attack there is nothing that could really...

Rubber Duck Meaning

...By definition, a rubber duck is: a toy shaped like a stylized duck, generally yellow, flat based, and symbolically linked to bathing. Since I was a four foot tall little girl with pigtail braids, running around with my Little Mermaid lunchbox, these little toys have been more than the usual “bath time buddy”. For years, I have been an avid collector of close to two hundred rubber ducks. I collect large ducks, miniature ducks, multicolored ducks, themed ducks, characterized ducks, and even an array of rubber duck themed objects. When I inform people of my peculiar collection, I usually get a weird look or a sarcastic comment along the lines of; “What are you? Five years old?” But, a disapproving face or harsh words could never discourage my collection. Aside from the toy aspect of the ducks, if one tries hard enough, they can draw parallels from cute squeaky objects to great life lessons....

Cold War and Communism

...After viewing the film “Duck and Cover”, it reminds me a lot of my childhood and being the class for a tornado drill. I imagine that being a child and living under the threat of a nuclear war would be something really scary to go through, especially not knowing when and where and even if the atomic bomb would ever explode. This is just another drill that children back then had to learn and understand and most importantly learn to cope with it. I would probably been the one child who was frustrated be simply because of fear. I think that it is truly heart breaking that these children had to live their lives in fear because of the threat of the atomic bomb. I would have felt prepared and protected even though I would have been afraid. Living under threat of terrorism today compared to living under the threat of a nuclear war is the fact that we never know or knew when something so tragic would happen. The difference between the two is that during the nuclear war, back then they were probably more prepared. I say that because back then they had drills to follow to keep themselves from harm as much as possible, for example “Duck and Cover”. When 9/11 happened, no one was prepared for that. It took America by surprise and because we were not prepared for that attack, lives were lost. Not only did we lose lives, we still do not practice drills such as duck and cover to possibly be able to save lives just in case something like this ever happens again. I think that it is very important...

Macroeconomics

...economic activities, government has the right to force individuals to do things. So if I bought and sold ducks for a business, I would want to make sure the distribution of ducks are high. If the distribution is low, my business won’t do as well in comparison if the distribution was high. With the less distribution of ducks, government is forcing me to pay more money to get my ducks. Private sectors economic activities, however, government has the right to administer involuntary transactions. So if I bought some ducks for my business and had to take a loan out from the bank because I didn’t have enough money, did not pay the loan back, government has the right to throw me in jail. Some people believe that the control that government has over us is too much control. Although with too much control it could be beneficial. With government’s control there is a correction for market failures. By government setting taxes on goods and services it helps improve economic efficiency. With higher taxes leads to private vectors over producing. Private sectors start over producing because their costs are borne by third parties rather than by their producers. In order to prevent sectors from over producing government can enforce involuntary policies. If I was getting duck bedding, food and shelter to run my business and not paying for it I would want to expand my fencing to get more ducks. Costing the third party to pay more for my wants. But government can enforce me to pay the taxes on the...
