E-Business Evolution
The evolution of e-business started in the large spread of personal computers in the 1980’s and the commercial internet brought about in the 1990’s. The e-business spectrum refers to the implementation electronic technology in all business functions. E-business is inclusive of computers and internet for both internal and external operations as well communication and e-commerce across an organization. The e-business evolution has allowed businesses to go from storing physical paper in large filing containers to storing that data and much more in digital format on servers. The ability of organizations to electronically store and process data lets them improve both speed of information storage and processing. E-business has allowed organizations to go from manually forecasting business transactions to doing it with spreadsheets and dedicated software increasing information flow and speed to users and making the organization more efficient.
The Internet has emerged as a significant aspect of today’s e-business evolution. In today’s marketplace larger companies have Internet accessibility to their goods as well services on their individual websites. The Internet will continues to change and improve, at some point even small businesses will need to acquire or develop their individual websites to be competitive in their own marketplace. The next e-business technology will be to have or acquire a mobile friendly design with things like apps for consumers to reach their products and services. “Harnessing the Internet and the technologies surrounding it has the potential to impact several business drivers such as attracting new customers; retaining customers; streamlining distribution channels, logistics operations and key business processes; attracting new partners; and improving productivity” (Papazoglou & Ribbers, 2006, p. 1).

In another e-business evolution communication has changed from paper mail, wire transmissions, and teletype to e-mail, texting and fax. This allows for faster communication across all aspects of an organization especially logistics, and increasing the speed of the supply chain. Organizations can save immensely because of tools like skype and Internet video-conferencing allowing them to meet with other locations around the globe as well with supply chain partners without the cost of having to actually go to the location. Evolution in e-business allows some organizations to sell products downloaded from their servers through the Internet like music from Apple’s iTunes and e-books from Amazon. E-business tools have improved over the years and will continue to evolve in future years and organizations who seek and embrace these new technologies will stay competitive and grow.
E-commerce involves outer looking processes that reach consumers, suppliers and outside partners, to involve sales, marketing, order taking, delivery, consumer service, acquiring raw materials and supplies for production and purchasing operating-expense items, such as office supplies. E-commerce is simpler to implement it only needs three types of integration to work vertical, cross-business, and technology integration. E-commerce in short is selling products or services online and is externally focused and is much simpler than e-business.
E-business is a more internally focused and uses web based technologies and the Internet to increase operating efficiency of the organization across all aspects of the business in turn increasing value to the consumers. E-business aspect is more complicated, much more focused on internal processes and strategies, and used to implement cost savings and find gains in efficiency, production and cost savings. E-business is more complex to integrate because it involves four levels of integration to include vertically, laterally, horizontally, and downward. E-business has a higher payoff in creating more efficient processes, lowering costs, and increasing profitability of the organization.
E-commerce and e-business both address the aforementioned processes and the technology aspects of databases, application tools and servers, tools for security purposes, system management and existing systems. E-business and e-commerce deal with the aspects of creating new value connections between the organization and existing consumers and suppliers, as well internally in the company itself. E-business as stated harder to implement but it provides so much more efficiency and allows the organization to grow and have superior collaboration in all directions and entities within the business. Technology will undoubtedly improve and change and the organizations willing to get on board and embrace improvements in e-business and e-commerce tools will stay ahead in their given market.
