Key Issues of Dell’s E-commerce In 1996, Dell began to sale computers via Internet. In last year, the Dell’s revenue from online sale occupied more than 25% of its total revenue. e-commerce become an important distribution channel and profit resource of Dell. Over the years, Dell reached some achievements, also got some problems in e-commerce.
Pool online service The poor online service is a big problem of Dell’s e-commerce. Some people think online shopping is more like a self-service shopping model. Customers choose goods and pay for it, then just wait for delivery. However, Dell is different, Dell sell computers, customers need more information than other products. Therefore, a good online service can retain and attract more customers. Dell’s poor online service was show up in three parts: less communication channel, passive wait, and poor service quality. The first problem of Dell’s e-commerce is less communication channels and time. When customers buy products on Dell.com, Dell just offer talk chat and cellphone two communication channels to customers. So, Dell may slight some customers when peak hours. If customers couldn’t get help in time, they will go to other website which can offer them a better service. Also, the time of online service is limited. People like shopping online because “shopping online is convenient for anyone, anytime (Dragan, 2013)”. Flexible time is a big reason why online shopping attracts customers. Dell should try best to meet customers’ time. Therefore, the longer service time could have more customers, and more communication channels means more customers Dell can achieve. Besides, passive wait is another big issue of Dell’s e-commerce. Do every customer familiar with computer? The answer is no.
