I. INTRODUCTION

Pollution is a major global concern because of its harmful effects on the person’s health and on the environment. Everyone is affected as we are all inhabitants of this one and only place we call home, our planet Earth. Each person has something to contribute to prevent its further deterioration, to help ourselves, the children and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. We can help combat pollution in our own immediate environment if we are aware of the nature and form of pollutions and its effects on us and the environment.

A pollutant is a waste material that pollutes air, water or soil. Three factors determine the severity of a pollutant, its chemical nature, the concentration and the persistence. There are two main categories of pollutants. Biodegradable pollutants are materials, such as sewage, that rapidly decompose by natural processes. These pollutants become a problem when added to the environment faster than they can decompose. Non-degradable pollutants are materials that either do not decompose or decompose slowly in the natural environment. Once contamination occurs, it is difficult or impossible to remove these pollutants from the environment.

SMOG OVER SANTIAGO

Set in an enclosed valley between the coastal range and the Andes Mountains, Santiago, Chile, experiences high levels of air pollution. Vehicular and industrial emissions, street dust, thermal inversions and the city’s location all contribute to the problem. Since 1993 the Chilean government has been working with an agency in the United States to improve air quality in Santiago.

Environment Pollution

...How to Prevent Pollution “This entire planet is our home. We are the only species that systematically destroy our own habitat."- Marianne Williamson Pollution prevention is an exceptionally major global concern because of the harmful effects of pollution on the person’s health and on the environment. Environmental pollution comes in various forms, such as: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, etc. Everyone is a stakeholder as we are all inhabitants of this one and only mother earth. Each person has something to contribute to advance an effective pollution prevention awareness initiative. Environmental protection is caring for us, loving our children and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. "If we heal the earth, we heal ourselves." You and I should therefore accept personal responsibility for the success of the environmental protection programs of our respective community by cooperating and actively participating in making the atmosphere pollution free. Help stop pollution today. Although on an individual basis we can help combat pollution in our own immediate environment, efficient control can be best institutionalized through legislation. Thus, most countries have already addressed the issue by passing some form of pollution prevention measures. Averting the onset of pollution in any area, i.e. be it on air, water or land, could be the start and the simplest preventive solution to the problem. This calls for a conscientious effort to adopt...

The biosphere is the natural world: plants, animals, soils, air, and water. 2. The culturesphere is defined by technological, economic, cultural, and political aspects of our world. A. Environment considers everything that affects a living organism. B. Ecology studies relationships between living organisms and their environment. C. Environmentalism is a social movement dedicated to protecting life support systems for all species. D. Life and economies depend on solar capital (energy from the sun) and natural capital (Earth’s resources and ecological services). 1. Capital is wealth; solar capital/energy creates renewable energy such as wind power, hydropower from flowing water, and biomass that is solar energy that has been changed to chemical energy and stored, in a biological form, such as wood. 2. Natural capital includes natural resources such as air, water, soil, wildlife, minerals, etc. and ecological services. a. Biological income from fish, grasslands, and underground water can be sustained, IF we don’t deplete it. b. Man, as a newcomer species, is endangering quality of life for us and other species. F. Pollution and Saving the Forests

...Pollution and Saving the Forests Pollution has always been one of the most difficult issues for any country in the world to cope with. The consequences of pollution are extremely harmful and serious for Earth, but generally people are self-centered. There are three major types of pollution relating to human activities. One most common pollution is caused mainly by the release of gas and smoke from combustion engine vehicles and from burning oil and coal from factories is air pollution. The second type of pollution is known as water pollution which is the result of dumping and wasting of and the releasing of chemical from industry into lakes, rivers and oceans. This pollution can kill hundreds of thousands of people and animals due to the spread of disease in water which every creatures need for living. Land pollution is the last type of the list which human activities are the main factor. Such as misuse of land resources, disposal of urban and industrial waste and improper use of soil for agriculture. There is no doubt that air is the only main source which produces oxygen for the respiration of all living things on Earth. Unfortunately, this essential element is now more and more polluted by the one who mostly need it, human. Smoke comes from combustion engine vehicles, especially automobiles, trucks, buses, and photo-chemical air from burning in stationary sources are the main dominant sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) which causes air pollution...

Pollution

...recent years the problem of pollution has become very acute. It is the industrialized west which takes it seriously, because it is suffering from its injurious effects. In India, sufficient attention has not been paid to it so far. If we do not tackle this problem now, future generations will suffer from the harmful effects of pollution. This problem assumes different forms such as Air pollution, Water pollution, Soil pollution, Noise pollution and Paper pollution. All this pollution results from the greed of man for getting more and more money. Trees have been cut down, on an unprecedented scale and large production by industrialization has assumed gigantic proportions. So the main cause of air and water pollution is unbalanced industrial growth and urbanization and deforestation. The owners of industries dump waste material on the surface of the earth or in rivers. So, water is polluted and the waste on the earth produces different poisonous gases which pollute the air. On the other hand, forests where purity air have been cut down and new cities and industries have been established in their place. The cutting of the forests causes what is called "The Green House Effects". It results in the heating of the earth's surface which has serious consequences for life on this planet. As a result, generations to come are likely to suffer from a number of incurable diseases. Timely measures must be taken to prevent the 'Green House Effect'. Paper pollution of public life and morality...

Enviorment Analysis

...Introduction Environmental pollution is a multi-disciplinary science involving chemistry, physics, life science, agriculture, medical science, public health, sanitary engineering etc. In broader sense, it is the study of the sources, reactions, transport, effect and fate of chemical species in the air, water and soil and the effect of human activity upon these. Pollutant: A substance present in nature, in greater than natural abundance due to human activity, which ultimately has a detrimental effect on the environment and therefrom on living organisms and mankind. Examples are- lead, mercury, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc. Contaminant: A material which does not occur in nature, but is introduced by human activity into the environment, affecting its composition. A contaminant is classified as a pollutant when it exerts a detrimental effect. Example- chlorine gas Types of Pollution Air Causes of air pollution: * motor vehicle exhaust * power stations * car manufacturing * fertilizer factories * demolishing buildings * solvent evaporation * volcanic eruption * building roads * forest fires Effect of air pollution: Global warming, acid rain, smog, ozone depletion are some effects of air pollution Water Causes of water pollution: * man-made chemicals used in farming * heavy metals * waste from factories * sediment from the river bed * air pollution * thermal (heat) pollution * soil pollution from rubbish dumps ...

Environment-How Can You Help to Protect It?

...hand over to the coming generations the environment as we found it, if not any better. Our planet is changing. There are a lot of things that affect our planet in a bad way but the good news is that everyone can help to reduce them and do their bit for the environment. While exploring six important topics that affect our community : Electricity (Energy), Pollution, Food, Water, Rubbish, Rainforest, I'll present the damage and a list of ways that we can all contribute to help our planet get better. 1. Electricity Energy is everywhere. We use energy to move the mouse for a computer, to jump and shout and walk and run. It takes energy to power a light bulb, and the light that the bulb gives off is also a form of energy. Other forms of energy include heat, chemical energy, gravitational energy and nuclear power. Electricity is a form of energy and this is what powers the TV, the kettle, dishwasher, hairdryer, toaster, remote control, mobile phone, fridge, stereo, electric toothbrush, and more. Our growing need for energy is one of the problems facing the world today, because producing electricity also produces our next topic - pollution. How to help? When you’re using electricity think about where it comes from and how you can use less to take the strain off of the environment- here are some simple ways to make a big difference: • On or Off? Leaving televisions, stereos and computers on standby with the little red light showing still uses up electricity, even though they might look like...

About Environmental Protection in China

...Nowadays in China, one issue is getting more and more severe as the increasing development of China’s economy, that is, environmental pollutions. Starting with air pollution, along with water pollution and soil pollution, China is currently facing the most serious problems than ever before. Establishing of many industrial factories has made China a top share in manufacturing. However, neglecting of protecting the environment while developing manufacturing has already resulted in lots of problems, such as the PM2.5 problem in many major cities, as well as the extreme lack of clean drinking water. On the other hand, concerns over global environmental issues, such as global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, trans-boundary movement of acid rain, and hazardous waste, etc., are mounting worldwide. About 25 years ago, a law named Environmental Protection Law of the People's Republic of China, which set out basic principles and directions for formulating environmental policies, was enacted on December 26, 1989. This Law was formulated for the purpose of protecting and improving people's environment and the ecological environment, preventing and controlling pollution and other public hazards, safeguarding human health and facilitating the development of socialist modernization. The law has stated that The state shall encourage the development of education in the science of environmental protection, strengthen the study and development of the...

Pollution

...There are two types of the cause of pollution, natural and man-made. Natural pollution occurs naturally and won't cause excessive harm to our lives due to its regeneration ability. While the man-made pollution is caused by human activities, and hard to get rid of. The backbones of man-made pollution are human population and technology. Naturally human needs contact to the environment, we get resources from nature. This is for the sake of living. By the increase of human population, the contact is getting more intensive, because needs are increasing. And by the findings and development of new technologies, human can apply them to get the resources. And it's common that new technologies would bring their respective side effects besides their advantages. Water Pollution Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or lives (in) it. When humans drink polluted water it often has serious effects on their health. Water pollution can also make water unsuited for the desired use. Water pollution is usually caused by human activities. Different human sources add to the pollution of water. There are two sorts of sources, point and nonpoint sources. Point sources discharge pollutants at specific locations through pipelines or sewers into the surface water. Nonpoint sources are sources that cannot be traced to a single site of discharge. Examples of point sources...

The goal of sustainable coastlines are to inspire local communities to come together as a whole and help towards hands-on beach cleanups monthly. I was inspired to take on this topic because from a young age I have felt a close relationship with the sea, and I want nothing more for others to treat it with the most upwards respects as well. From this presentation, I hope to inspire others to protect our oceans and give our marine life a safe ecosystem; the same we want for our future generations....

Tambrands—Overcoming Cultural Resistance

...Mohammed Konneh BIO 171-B Ralph Spagnolo March 29, 2016 Midterm Essays Anti-environmentalists argue that “people have always polluted the earth” not knowing the reason we should care about the pollutions is in that quote itself. Humans have been polluting this planet since the dawn of mankind and at some point in time we have to understand that these pollutions would start to have an impact on the way we’re used to living. At first people ignorantly polluted the earth and depleted resources that are to be shared with the other species that are in our ecosystem but when rivers started to dry and animals began to mysteriously migrate, people started to take notice and the study of organisms and their interaction with their non-living surroundings. It is true that people have always polluted the earth but the majority won’t understand the fuss over ecology and the effects pollution have on ecology because modernization blinds us from the species in our ecosystem and what they’re going through as we progress with modernization. Like the ripples that appears when rock hits the water, our ecosystem too have ripple effects when an area is polluted. Take for example when the toxic emissions that comes out of cars, the birds in the sky aren’t used to the toxins in the emissions and when some of them breathe it in they die limiting the population of the birds in the ecosystem. Since there are less birds in the ecosystem, snakes and other predators that depend on the bird for...

...Water and Air Pollution There are many types of pollutions. They come from many different places and from many different things. They mainly take harmful effects on the Earth. Pollution is a cycle of ongoing destruction to our world. The amount of destruction caused by pollution can be lowered by humans. First, what is pollution? Pollution is the introduction into the environment of a substance that has harmful or poisonous effects. Not all pollution can be seen or show signs, though they all bring change to the environment. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. Other forms of pollution include air pollution, littering, soil contamination, water pollution, and visual pollution. Air pollutants cause damage to human health and the ozone layer, which protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. It affects plants interfering with photosynthesis, making it hard for them to make food properly. Water pollution, on the other hand, kills life inside bodies of water. It also affects the food chain when smaller organisms eat the pollution and then are eaten by larger organisms, which are eventually eaten by humans, during the food chain. People can get hepatitis by eating poisoned seafood. When people dump chemicals into the bodies of water, sea plants die and decompose in the water using more oxygen that other sea organisms need, unbalancing the ecosystem. The causes of many of these problems can be lowered...

...Environment pollution is the mixing of harmful pollutants into the environment causing disturbance to the natural processes and cycles. Various types of environmental pollution are categorized as the water pollution, air pollution, land pollution and noise pollution. Production of solid and liquid wastes on large scale from the industries, emissions of hazardous gases, deforestation, global warming, and many more problems originated by the human beings are the main reasons of increasing the environmental pollution. In the last one decade, there is a great increase in the level of environmental pollution and scenario has become worse than earlier. In the whole universe, there is only one planet named earth provides facility of all basic elements required for the life existence. It gives us life and what we give it, pollution. However, it was much better that if we give it nothing but we give it pollution and contamination regularly. As we all live on this planet, we all are highly responsible for the maintenance of the earth. However, we all forget our responsibility and busy in our daily routine and competitions to just fulfil our needs in anyways. Fresh air and clean water are two most basic needs to sustain life but nothing of both is possible in the modern time. It seems that, after some decades here would be no man, no plants, no animals and no life. All the natural gases in the environment make their balance by reacting each other. Some of them are used as a food by the...

...Nowhere on Earth is free from environmental pollution. It has been becoming more and more serious these days. This makes us think a lot. So what is the cause of this terrible matter? And what is the bad consequence it led to? Let’s try to find out. There’re many kinds of pollution such as air pollution, water pollution... that should be tackled as soon as possible. In Ho Chi Minh City, air tests show that air brings many high risk of health problems for people living here. Dust floats in the air is the top actor that pollutes the air seriously. Many lakes, rivers are getting polluted by the toxic waste from factories as well as daily activities, which has not been treated properly. The results of recent surveys have showed that the amount of heavy metal in soil has been increasing in recent years. Not only that but people also find out that the soil contains a large amount of redundant pesticide in many places. So what is the cause of these current situations? First of all, it’s the lack of common sense of protecting the environment. The bad condition of environment has been due to the poor awareness of many people. Some people think protecting environment is the responsbility of government, not theirs. Others think what they have done is so small that it’s not enough to harm the environment. Another cause of pollution is business’s lack of responsbility. Because of profits, many businesses have offenced the production process, that contributes to cause the pollution. Moreover...
