Identify an eating disorder. Outline one explanation for this eating disorder (4) One eating disorder is anorexia. The psychodynamic explanation, developed by Bruch, is that adolescents don’t want to grow up and separate from their parents. This is caused by the parents always anticipating the child’s needs, for example, never letting the child feel hungry. During adolescence these parents exert a lot of control over the children, to the point where the teenager has little decisions to make for themselves. As a result, the teenager restricts the food the consume as it is the only thing they can control themselves Discuss explanations for the success and or failure of dieting (4+16)

Dieting is the practice of eating food in a regulated and supervised fashion to decrease, maintain, or increase body weight. Herman and Mack came up with the concept of restraint theory, which looked at the cognitive restriction of food intake. However, they found that attempting not to eat may increase the probability of overeating. Wardle and Beale randomly assigned 27 obese women to three groups. These were the diet group, the exercise group, and the non-treatment group. The study assessed each group at both weeks 4 and 6, with the food intake and appetite at 4 weeks being assessed before and after a small snack, and at week 6, it was measured under stressful conditions, in order to show how each group would fare under various settings. The study found that women in the diet group actually ate more in both assessments than the other two groups. This study backs up the ideas of restraint theory. Research support for restraint theory comes from Ogden (2003), who tested the failure of dieting by giving a group of dieters and non dieters a high or low calorie snack such as chocolate or crackers, then followed by a taste preference test of other foods.Ogden found that the

Fad Diets

...Fad Diets According to Michael P. Levine, in his book, The Prevention of Eating Problems and Eating Disorders, “Preventing eating disorders would spare many people and their families years of suffering and the specter of death from starvation or suicide.” Eating Disorders cause many problems in life; they are something we need to stop because fad diets are unhealthy in many ways. First, fad diets are unhealthy because they cause rapid weight loss. The first cause of rapid weight loss in fad diets is women’s health, looks, and reproduction. David S. Goldbloom states in the book Medical Issues and the Eating Disorders: the Interface, “Females are more known for fad diets do to their physical complications reproduction.” Women are usually emotional during reproduction cycles, they do not like the way they look, and they begin dieting in dangerous ways. Looks are not everything! People should not diet quickly to cause happiness, because health wise it is not good for the human body. The way someone looks should not affect their lives in ways that they would look to dangerous dieting. A second cause of rapid weight loss in fad diets is eating too much due to reproduction appetitive drives. Goldbloom also mentions that “It is well-known that disturbed eating behavior from any cause can disrupt menstrual function, it is perhaps less well-known that the menstrual cycle itself influences appetitive drives.” Women will both eat too much and become obese, or they will starve themselves...

Eating Disorder and the Abuse of Diet Suppressants Among Adolescents

...Eating Disorder Among Adolescents Angela Dominguez RES/110 May 11, 2011 Dr. Richard Wolodkowicz University Of Phoenix Many adolescents have become obsessed about loosing weight without considering the health problems of dieting. According to the (Eating disorder statistics 2004, 2010) more than half of adolescent girls and nearly one third of adolescent boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors. Eating disorders can affect people physically and mentally and even can lead to dead. In a national study of high school students, nearly one third of all high school girls and 16% of all high school boys surveyed evidenced some symptoms of an eating disorder (ED; Shapiro-Weiss and Shapiro-Weiss 2001). Such a high incidence of eating disorder symptom-logy is particularly troubling when one considers the cost of these psychiatric symptoms. Eating disorders are chronic conditions that led to a decreased quality of life in personal, interpersonal, and financial realms (Kashubeck-West and Mintz, 2001). Most significantly, eating disorders have among the highest mortality rates of all mental disorders. (Kathleen A. Peterson & Sharon E. Paulson & Kristen K. Williams, 2007 p.630) Studies have showing that family, friends, and media are three of the main factors that influence adolescents to eating disorders (Hayley Dohnt and Marika Tiggemann, 2006). The pressure from parents and friends telling adolescents to loose weight, making fun of them and the influence of magazines...

...in your own words what the following eating disorders are and what the needs of the individuals suffering these disorders are; anorexia, bulimia, binge eating Anorexia nervosa Anorexia means ‘loss of appetite from nervous origins’ suffers say that they do not feel hungry, though recovered sufferers do admit that they were very hungry, but did not allow themselves to eat. When a person suffers with this condition they become fixated on their body weight and dieting. They live in fear of normal body weight so are continually pushing themselves towards becoming thinner. Sufferers of this condition can be fanatical with food but they will refuse themselves healthy meals and follow strict diets to make sure they lose as much weight as possible. Anorexia sufferers do not think that there is anything wrong with the amount of weight they have lost even when others see them as being extremely thin. People who have anorexia often have very low self confidence and feel the more weight they lose the better they look so the better they feel about themselves. Sufferers often exercise to the extreme and may force themselves to vomit or use laxatives. Women who suffer with anorexia often find that their menstrual cycle stops. This illness is better to be dealt with as soon as possible as the more the illness progresses the more difficult it can be to deal with. In serious cases a spell in hospital may be needed as anorexia suffers can take their dieting so far that it can result in death. ...

Dieting

...Dieting Dieting and food are as much of our pop culture as music and entertainment. According to Google, dieting is to “restrict oneself to small amount of special kinds of food in order to lose weight.” I believe dieting should receive more attention since I hear a lot of people going on the outrageous fad diets and then later hear them complaining about how they gained all the weight back and then some. Then there are those ‘fad diets’ which scare me, as do the dieting pills. I mean they can be helpful for some, but losing weight really quickly cannot be healthy for anyone. I believe that healthy eating and exercising are the best way to stay healthy. There are endless amounts of diets that we may choose from. Some of the most popular diets are the Atkins Diet, Mediterranean, Vegan, Weight Watchers, Raw Food, and the list goes on. The food choices people make isn’t only about filling up, it can also be an expression of who we are, when we are, and sometimes what we value in a sense. The expression, “You are what you eat” now takes on another meaning in this world of carnivores, herbivores, fat free fanatics, raw food, and junk food junkies. In today’s world, we are fascinated with the latest diets celebrities are following and with what other people are eating. Commercial advertisements and reality TV often showcase people with these crazy food cravings and uncontrollable obsessions. It is like our new entertainment. Meanwhile, there’s diet propaganda that encourages young...

I. Laura Fraser who has doubts and misconceptions of dieting should reconsider her mindset because an individual has control over their own body and can maintain it. A. An individual who has control of their own body can maintain what is put into their body and what is kept out as well. B. Having a controlled diet helps an individual either maintain, gain, or lose weight. 1. A maintaining diet means that an individual will consistently watch what they eat, however they will never increase or decrease their calorie intake, or do any physical or medical activity that will affect their current weight. 2. A gaining or losing weight diet simply means that a person is trying to build weight up in a healthy manner, or increases their physical activity or chooses to eat healthier to lose the weight. II. Fraser fails in proving that a diet in a person’s life is healthier because it prevents a person from many health risks and emotional side effects. A. If an individual...

Triggering an Eating Disorder

...Triggers If people are vulnerable to eating disorders, sometimes all it takes to put the ball in motion is a trigger event that they do not know how to handle. A trigger could be something as seemingly innocuous as teasing or as devastating as rape or incest. Triggers often happen at times of transition, shock, or loss where increased demands are made on people who already are unsure of their ability to meet expectations. Such triggers might include puberty starting a new school, beginning a new job, death, divorce, marriage, family problems, breakup of an important relationship, critical comments from someone important, graduation into a chaotic, competitive world, and so forth. There is some evidence to suggest that girls who achieve sexual maturity ahead of peers, with the associated development of breasts, hips, and other physical signs of womanhood, are at increased risk of becoming eating disordered. They may wrongly interpret their new curves as "being fat" and feel uncomfortable because they no longer look like peers who still have childish bodies. Wanting to take control and fix things, but not really knowing how, and under the influence of a culture that equates success and happiness with thinness, the person tackles her/his body instead of the problem at hand. Dieting, bingeing, purging, exercising, and other strange behaviors are not random craziness. They are heroic, but misguided and ineffective, attempts to take charge in a world that seems overwhelming...
