Drosophila Lab Paper

... Whittier College Jacob Alfaro BIOL 251 Whittier College Effect of Ebony and Wild Type Phenotypes on the Natural Selection and Fitness of Drosophila November 2015 Effect of Ebony and Wild Type Phenotypes on the Natural Selection and Fitness of Drosophila November 2015 INTRODUCTION: There are many different Drosophila phenotypes. This experiment focuses on the ebony and wild type phenotypes. These phenotypes affect color. The ebony flies more dark and the wild type flies are much lighter. The ebony is recessive and therefore carries two copies of the recessive allele, therefore the Drosophila are homozygotes. But wild type is dominant, meaning that heterozygotes and homozygotes represent the wild type phenotype. A phenotype is a physical characteristic as a result of a genotype affected by its environment (Brooker et al, 2011). A genotype is the set of genes of an individual (Brooker et al, 2011). Fight Night

...Fight Night Smack! I remember the thud following the force to her face. She laid there with no movement. We had paused to see if she was still alive before making any more comments. Even Bria hesitated before she ferociously walked away from the scene. At this point, I thought the fight was over. As a truck approached in the mist of the chaos, the high beams from the headlights reflect the oozing blood coming from her nose and mouth. She stood semi-confident across the street. Over the loud rap music and bass, I faintly heard her say, “I want my ‘one’ again.” Those are the words I did not expect to hear her say. It was summer time of 2011. A time of the year I stayed out during late nights and woke up late in the noon. I had a routine of hanging out with my 17 year old cousin Bria in Hopewell. We usually made up our day spontaneously. However, this particular day was planned pretty well. On this day, we made plans to go watch her boyfriend play in a football Scrimmage. She planned to go with me and four of her friends. I was always the younger one out of the bunch, or what everyone else called me “the baby”, so I never really said much when they conversed among each other. Most of the time I did not say much because I usually did not know who or what they were talking about. Only a few times I would recognize a name here and there. The days I hung out with Bria, were always my exciting days. There was never a dull moment with her. Still, like any regular day that we hung out...

The Symbolism In The Masque Of The Red Death

...The ebony clock symbolizes the darkness of death and is a constant reminder of death. When a guest hears its chimes they were instantly reminded of death. This is evident when the text states “....the giddiest grew pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in confused reverie or meditation,”(Poe). The ebony clock is housed in the seventh room. The clock makes the guest extremely nervous (reminds them of the inevitable passage of time and how their time is limited until death). The guest attempted to escape death by coming to the abbey, but the clock serves as a reminder that they can’t live forever which is the reason why they avoid the room as much as possible). For these reasons, it is clear that the ebony is an example of symbolism in The Masque of the Red...

Broken Medley

...and I knew it was time. "Reach," I yelled to Susan, whom had seemed unusually far away. Yelling, "Slow down, slow down," turned into "Stop!" Susan halted to a stop as the gold baton fell into her hands and she took off into a dead sprint. The red colored flag rose. We were disqualified from something that we all dreaded; going out of the exchange zone. I had never really been a part of a team that had a chance to win something, but the potential was always there. I finally got my chance to be a part of such a team my sophomore year of track. Mr. McCain, the head track coach, had decided to experiment with some different races to gain more team points. Since the girls' team lacked a medley relay, he placed Ebony, Adeya, Susan and I in those spots. Ebony would run the 400, Adeya would run the 200, and Susan and I would start the race off by each running the 100. We all had worked viciously to earn those spots by running off against our teammates. Going into the first race we had not expected much since Susan and I had never run this type of race. There...

Certain results have shown that after viewing violence in a film, viewers are more aggressive. It desensitizes people and makes them more probable to perform violent acts. The violence in films is lifted up by showing that people can achieve goals and live fabulous lifestyles by exerting dominance with violence. However, movie violence has positive effects such as the reduction of crime after large audiences view violent films.  Good and evil, yin and yang, and Newton’s third law all show that there are two sides to everything. Where there is one effect, there is another to counter-balance. This is proven with the diverse effects of violence in movies. More often than not, when people speak about violence in movies, they speak about how it corrupts the minds of youth and leads to mankind becoming more violent as a species. The Masque of the Red Death

...plague swept across an unknown kingdom killing many people as it went. There were sharp pain, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. Poe had two main themes for readers to think about. These themes were proven through five main symbols: The ebony clock in the black room, Prince Prospero in the abbey with his friends, the colors of the seven rooms in the abbey, the format of the hallway and rooms and, Prince Prospero running after death through all the rooms. One theme that Poe intended to portray is the fact that death can’t be cheated or escaped, no matter how powerful or prosperous a person is. In the short story, Prince Prospero tries to hide from the “Red Death”. After some time the “Red Death” slips into the abbey taking Prince Prospero’s Life. This proves that even the most prosperous die. Another theme that Poe tries to portray is that people can’t go through life feeling that they are invincible and death will never get them. When the ebony clock in the black room tolled out every hour, the guest ignored their nervous sensations and continued with their masquerade. After the ebony clock tolled the last hour of the night, every guest in the abbey died. The ebony clocked symbolizes the time that goes by leading up a person’s death. This ties to into both themes because many of the guests were prosperous and felt that the seclusion from in the abbey would make them invincible. However, at the end of the night the “Red Death” got to them...
