Youth at Risk

...Youth At-Risk: Preventing Student Dropouts and Facilitating Reintegration A State of Israel Experience Full Paper Melfi M. Caranto. Technological Institute of the Philippines, Manila Overview of Israel’s Educational System The wellbeing of the youth is being taken as a serious national issue in Israel and they have done concrete actions about it. First of all, Israel has a very good educational structure and system. Education is free and compulsory from 1st to 12th grade. There is no private school in Israel because almost all of the school is supported by the state. It is very interesting to note that there is no student who repeats a term because of difficulty coping with lessons. They have a good team who are composed of a school counsellor, a home room teacher and a subject teacher who ensures that a student is getting the attention and the help that he/she needs to finish the term or the school grade where they belong. The Baggrut or the Matriculation examination is a very systematic way of assessing a student’s readiness to land on a decent job or go to college after serving the army. It is a must for all students to enter the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). After finishing the 12th grade (senior high school) boys have to serve in the army for three years while the girls should serve for two years. ...are popular and appealing to our youth and even to many adults. Entertainment in general pervades the American culture, and this specific type of entertainment dealing with superheroes is of considerable size and has been a constant for several decades. Images of Superman, Captain America and many others are immediately recognized when seen. The entertainment value of these fictitious tales has caused the companies that own them to expand into creating computer games and producing movies, which has made them even more visible. It is considered weird if a person does not even know the basic story of these costumed figures. The adventures, stories, and even lives of these fictions have become a part of the American Psyche. Throughout the course of this semester, discussion in the Philosophy of Science class has led to topics such as the paradigms and presuppositions that we approach our world from and the metaphors that we use to communicate ideas and concepts. Such discussion has led to the asking of questions concerning things that we encounter in everyday circumstances. Questions like “What are the presuppositions of this statement?” were asked on a regular basis. One of the most interesting discussions in the class was the topic of the multiverse concept, a reality consisting of more than a single “reality”. Discussion of this topic immediately led to another topic in which the multiverse concept had been used: the world of superheroes found in comic books. As the class had...

...Background Lembaga Tabung Haji – TH (Pilgrims Fund Board) was established as a premiere economic-based Islamic financial institution inspired with a realization to help provide investment services and opportunities while managing pilgrimage activities for the Malaysian Muslim community. TH was meant to play a bigger social role, thus in addition to managing pilgrimage activities, it operates as an alternative institutional body providing investment opportunities for Islamic depositors to save and invest in accordance to Islamic principles. Depositors' money is invested in selected investment establishments spread across a diverse range of investment portfolios based strictly on Syariah principles to preserve the purity and integrity of profits derived which is free from "riba"elements and to avoid trading in prohibited ‘haram' products. The fund board was established in 1962 as a modest proposal to aid the Malayan rural economy and to enable the Muslims to perform 'Hajj', one of the tenets of their faith. Today TH is one of the greatest cooperative success stories in Malaysia. Its basic principles, structured by the Royal Professor Ungku Aziz who was then an economic lecturer and later became the Vice Chancellor of the University Malaya, remain unchanged, but the institution has developed beyond imagination. In the early days, Islamic community in Malaysia resorted to rather unsystematic and traditional methods when it comes to saving their money for the purpose of performing...

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...
