The Republic of Korea (South Korea)

Introduction

The Republic of Korea is a small country located in the far eastern region of Asia. The country is a centre of economic activity, culture and arts (www.korea.net, 2014). As of 2013, the total population of South Korea is 50.2 million, out of which 25 million resides in Seoul Capital area. They are one of the countries with the highest population densities worldwide (www.statista.com, 2014). After the Korean War (1950-1953), the country achieved incredible economic growth in a very short period of time, known as “Miracle on the Han River” (www.korea.net, 2014). The country is very well known for its televised drama, films and popular music that have swept many parts of Asia. This is known as the “Hallyu”, or the “Korean wave”.
The next section will discuss the different gross domestic product (GDP) indicators, followed by a labour market analysis and a price level analysis. This essay will end with a conclusion.

Production output performance analysis

Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given time period. A final good is an item bought by its final customer (Parkin, 2010). An intermediate good is excluded in the GDP, to avoid double counting. The graph above shows South Korea’s GDP over the last 10 years. The country’s economy has been growing rapidly in big numbers. However, due to the global economic crisis in end-2008 and 2009, and the country being heavily dependent on exports (www.marketoracle.co.uk, 2008), their GDP dropped to a record low of USD$834.06 billion in the last 10 years. Being one of the fastest countries to recover with soaring growth rates in just less than a year, the country’s GDP increased an astonishing 21.7% from an economic crisis. From then on, an increasing trend is spotted in South Korea’s GDP.

Economics Project 1 Paper

...Business Economics Project Paper 1 January 2011 1) Everyone’s Gasoline Problem Gasoline prices in Chicago have risen from $2.64 to $2.92 between September 2009 and September 2010(2) with a series of price changes in between. Prices change for a number of economic reasons. One such reason is supply and demand. Gas prices rise after 9/11 and after the start of the war with Iraq, it seems to rise when there is any major crises. Supply and demand plays a major part in the fluctuation of gasoline prices. The price of crude oil can and does influence the supply and price of gasoline. When the price of oil rises, the cost of supplying gasoline increases for petrol suppliers, reducing the quantity of crude oil demanded in gasoline production and potentially reducing the supply of gasoline. So its expected that a rise in the price of crude oil to lead to a rise in the price of gasoline. Even when crude oil prices are stable, gasoline prices can fluctuate because of reasons such as the season and local retail station competition. Additionally, gasoline prices can change rapidly due to crude oil supply disruptions stemming from world events, or domestic problems such as refinery or pipeline outages.(3) Crude oil prices are determined by worldwide supply and demand, with significant influence by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). OPEC has tried to keep world oil prices at its target level by setting an upper production limit on its members.(3) also increase...

Economic Advisement Paper: Option 1

...Economic Advisement Paper: Option 1 ECO/372 September 15, 2014 The United States economy is currently recovering from a recession that occurred in 2007. While this society is on a steady incline to forget what happened, it was a traumatic time for many Americans. As economic advisors, it is critical to evaluate factors such as unemployment, expectations, consumer income, and interest rates. By analyzing these elements, we are able to determine how each affects aggregate supply and demand. We also developed a set of recommendations for the U.S. president regarding government spending and taxes based on the economic factors’ current state. This will help to better understand all concerns and improvements that should be considered. Unemployment is a key issue many in the US wants confronted. Although the unemployment rate has lowered recently, as of August 2014, it stands at 6.1 percent, a decrease of .5 percent from January 2014 (“United States Department of Labor,” 2014). Records show that each year, since 2009, when the average unemployment rate was 9.2, it has steadily decreased, where at the end of 2013, the average unemployment rate for the year was 7.3, (“United States Department of Labor,” 2014). The reason these numbers are important is because unemployment is directly linked to the state of the economy and aggregates supply and demand. When people are unemployed, they have less money to spend and will most likely hoard their money instead of spending it on...

This study highlights this fact and has found tenure to be a likely cause for the lack of Asia-focused articles. This stems from the strong emphasis universities place on the publishing of articles and with the belief that there is a lack of reliable data on Asia, researchers are less inclined to conduct studies on Asia given that top economics journals require accurate and dependable data for publishing. 1 FYP Project Number: HE_2AY1415_09 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We, the authors of this paper, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Chia Wai Mun, Associate Professor, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technology University, for her unwavering support and constant...

Structure and Pattern of Introduction of Business Related Discipline Research Articles

...Business and economics papers have made a significant contribution to the development of the corporations and economics growth. However, it may be difficult for the readers to fully understand the materials if the structure of the papers is very complicated. In recent decades, there is an increasing trend in the complicacy of business and economics papers (Ellison, 2000). This phenomenon will induce more complexity in comprehending profound research papers. Regarding it, some basic models have been invented to give a general guideline of the building blocks of the research papers. For example, for writing an introduction of an article, Swales (1990) introduced a rhetorical pattern called create-a-research-space (CARS) which segments the introduction into three major parts, namely move 1, 2 and 3. The move 1 aims to give a background information of the topic of the research paper, depicting a general picture of which area the paper will fall into. The next move known as niche basically serves to connect move 1 and 3, illustrating the motive and inspiration of the paper (Swales & Feak, 2012). Followed by niche is the main purpose of the article. By presenting in either a purposive or descriptive way, the author can show a ultimate goal of the article. However, although some kinds of standardizations have been made to formalize the research papers, the construction of journals articles may vary extremely across different disciplines. Especially in business and economic areas, the structures...

The theory of economic development throughout history has been of significant discussion especially in regard to the works of Rostow and Gerschenkron. The differentiation between the pattern of thoughts and ideals is a hotly debated topic within economics. The ideals the two theorists create, each substantially creditable in their own right, entail degrees of correlation and variation. Leaving the conclusion, do the to patterns of economic thought complement one another or is there distinct disparity between the two.   Applied examples will be used below to analyse the extent of segregation or association between the works of Rostow and Gerschenkron.
