Elisabeth Kubler-Ross once stated, “The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of those depths.” How can one sympathize, better yet, empathize with someone if they themselves have never gone through struggle? Growing up with an abnormally severe case of eczema has proved my fortitude to prosper and excel, despite the constant struggle of handling pain physically and mentally. Having a malady, as described, has scarred me physically, yet mentally formed an adept mind. In elementary school, I was approached by my coach and requested to become part of the physical fitness program. This program consisted of several running events, pull-ups, and various other events. Through this course of action, I have been afforded the opportunity to learn and experience situations that most never do. The training school for my specialty in the military had the highest rate of failure in the Army. Although this intense living situation was stressful, I still graduated among the top twenty students, and was awarded for having the highest Army Physical Fitness Test on the entire Fort Sam Houston base. Being relocated to live in Fort Bragg, home of the Special Forces, was an experience that really piqued my interest in physical therapy. Here, an enormous population of veterans was altered physically in some manner, whether it was missing a leg, or having acquired a dysfunctional body part from a war-related injury. Watching them as they navigated in pain, but still had the ability to display a sense of contentedness was something I somewhat saw in myself, but never recognized in others. This sense of encouragement I felt, and still feel today is what keeps me motivated to pursue my goal to become a physical
