Multicultural Issues
The Diaz family is a compilation of two people coming from different spectrums of culture. Edie Diaz is a 38-year-old white Jewish female who was brought up in a broken family. Her parents divorced when she was young. Following her mother, she was taken care of by her grandparents. However, she suffered from abuse by the care of her grandfather and continues to experience resentment towards her grandparents. Since she identifies as a white woman, she is less likely to experience discrimination and diversity.
As for Edie husband Roberto, he is Puerto Rican and was raised in a big loving family. Although his parents separated when he was young, his family was still loving. Roberto was involved in street gangs at an early age. His father taught him to defend himself, which led him to becoming strong-willed. Roberto takes great pride in his work and support this family. He was likely to experiences diversity due to gangs and discrimination.
Ava is a young 10-year-old girl who resembles her father both physically and temperamentally. Her teacher calls her a bully in school and she has little socialization. Since her parents do not have any religious or culture impact, Ava may lack diversity.

However, Edie and Roberto tried hard to become pregnant and had specific schedules to conceive. Since becoming pregnant was the main priority, it took a toll on Edie’s and Roberto’s marriage. When Edie had Ava, she took the raise her daughter and did not work much. Although she was happy to care for Ava, she did not feel content with staying home. The gender issue with Edie is the specific gender role of a woman, staying at home and tending to children’s needs and housework.
