Smog in Edmonton
Smog is a harmful ground-level fog which is comprised of many chemicals and poses serious health risks to the public. Smog is on the rise with the growth of population within Edmonton and with the expansion of city limits. If the continued trend for smog continues, the earth could be in great danger. Some individuals state there is not much we can do to reduce the amount of smog in cities, however; there is a great deal we can do to help preserve our planet. Planting trees and plants, placing restrictions on manufacturing facilities and ensuring our vehicles are kept in proper maintenance are all ways we can help reduce smog in our city. The greener the planet, the more fruitful our future will be. Not only does planting trees and plants help to keep our community beautiful, it also helps to produce oxygen. It does this because the trees and plants take in carbon dioxide and in turn produce much-needed oxygen. When we cut down trees or get rid of gardens we are adding to the air quality problem. Companies can also do their part by restricting the production of chemicals into the air and recycling to reduce their ecological footprint on the Earth. In turn, these companies are then able to better produce products for consumers like gasoline for vehicles. Motor vehicles cause a great deal of damage to the environment and are one of the leading causes of smog in Edmonton. When we do not take care of our vehicles, they release more dangerous emissions than normal. All gas powered cars are obviously going to release some form of emission, but the more care we give to our engines, the lesser amount of problems we will produce.
There is so much we can do to reduce the smog in the Edmonton region, however; everyone needs to do their part to help out or the effort could be wasted. Granted, every little bit counts, but if we all do a little bit more, we can truly reduce the smog produced in our area. Planting trees and plants, restricting production companies and maintaining our cars are not really difficult in the big picture. Will you help Edmonton reduce smog and improve the Air Quality Index?

...opinion from two different authors that focus on the same topic to reflect the solemnity and pessimism of this revolutionized era. The supporting texts are attestable, focused, and structured on the problem. Bob Weber’s “Air pollution northeast of Edmonton as bad as world’s largest cities: study ” and Andrew Nikiforuk’s “Alberta’s Oil Legacy: Bad Air and Rare Cancers” are examples of this devious colloquial style portrayed by the media. While Bob Weber and Andrew Nikiforuk share a humane attitude with respect to the study of Alberta’s air pollutants, Nikiforuk is more critical of the detail of exemplifying the seriousness of the problem. Through his description of subsidiary secondary characters , his affective writing style and his manipulative headlines/images , it is clear that Nikiforuk fully comprehends the importance of reducing the air pollutants in the province, while Weber plays around with the motive of the story and is not consistent in conveying his point for the whole province. The two articles focus around elaborating the main point of the study, by the “ Rowland-Blake Group, a University of California-Irvine laboratory that took a snapshot of air quality in Fort Saskatchewan just 30 kilometres northeast of Edmonton for two...

Critical Analysis #2

...Critical Analysis #2 – Article Critique Brent Melnyk Ethical Fundamentals – JRSB311 Wes Sallenback February 5, 2013 Sarah O’Donnell, on May 11, 2009, wrote an article for the Edmonton Journal entitled, 'No-zero' policy gives students a do-over; Deadlines in the adult world often just as flexible. She describes the Edmonton Public Schools policy of “No-Zero” and allows for both sides of a touchy subject to be heard. On June 1, 2012, Edgar Schmidt, the superintendent for Edmonton Public Schools, penned an open letter to the citizens of Alberta. He wrote “In order for students to be successful in school and in life, they need the knowledge, skills and attitudes to make a smooth transition into the world of work and post secondary education. By taking an all or nothing approach to a missed assignment, we are not doing our job as educators to prepare all students, including those who face significant challenges, to take the next step in their educational journey as a lifelong learner.” (Schmidt, 2012, Para 6.) Schmidt (2012) also said, “The reason we assign a certain grade is to give a student feedback on what they have learned. If a student writes a test and gets all the answers wrong, they are assigned a zero on that test. This tells the teacher the student does not know the material and needs extra support. The mark is then put in the context of all their other learning that takes place during the year. If, by the end of the year, the student...

Alexander Cameron Rutherford

...territorial administration of Premier Frederick W. A. G. Haultain. At the federal level, however, Rutherford was a Liberal. In 1905, Alberta Lieutenant Governor George Bulyea asked Rutherford to form the new province's first government. As Premier, his first task was to win a workable majority in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, which he did in the 1905 provincial election. His second was to provide the apparatus of provincial government: his government established everything from speed limits to a provincial court system. The legislature also controversially, and with Rutherford's support, selected Edmonton over rival Calgary as the provincial capital. Calgarians' bruised feelings were not salved when the government loca ted the University of Alberta, a project dear to the Premier's heart, in his hometown of Strathcona, just across the North Saskatchewan River from Edmonton. The government was faced with labour unrest in the coal mining industry, which it resolved by establishing a commission to examine the problem. It also set up a provincial government telephone network—Alberta Government Telephones—at great expense, and tried to encourage the development of new railways. It was in pursuit of this last objective that the Rutherford government found itself embroiled in scandal. Early in 1910, William Henry Cushing's resignation as...

...DATE: November 14, 2012 TO: Muhammad Hossain, Acting Chair of Bachelor of Commerce FROM: Lorraine Alcantara, Full-Time Student SUBJECT: Choices of Media Options to Promote the Program Because of its lack of publicity, Grant MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce needs to promote itself. This report’s purpose is to recommend various media options that can give positive exposure for the program. It will present advantages and disadvantages of three media options: newspaper, television, and social media. This report is significant because our program is not being promoted to prospective students. The report begins by explaining the significance of the need. Next, three alternatives are described and a recommendation is specified based on my findings. Significance of Need: Exposure to Prospective Students Bachelor of Commerce is an increasing choice of program for high school graduates and undecided individuals. However, we’re not exposing much of Grant MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce to prospective students. After the school’s transformation to university status three years ago, we have not taken the opportunity to promote our program. This will not aid us in being more attractive than our biggest competition, the University of Alberta. The University of Alberta uses mainly social media to promote itself and has taken opportunities to publish as much about their program: * YouTube BSAVoice’s Channel (2011). * Facebook University of Alberta School of...

SR 160 Project Essay

...The following lists my major accomplishments and projects underway: Background. The SR 160 project consists of the NEPA process and the widening of 11 miles from 2 to 4 lanes. The NEPA process was completed in 2014. This project was divided into two phases to meet funding availability requirements. Phase 1 is the eastern half of the project and Phase 2 encompasses the western half which is much more complex project due to the mountainous terrain. One of my major accomplishments in the prior 7 months has been the delivery of the SR 160 Phase 1 project final design. This project was designed by the CA Group and was reviewed by the Department’s review team. The project was bid on September 19, 2015 and the bid was opened on October 22, 2015. There were 9 firms on the bidders list, but only 6 of them competed for the project and the apparent lower bidder was Aggregate Industries with $16.5 M. Phase 1 construction is expected to begin in January 2016 and to be completed in April 2017. The SR 160 Phase 2 final design is an underway project, however, I should consider that another accomplishment is the fact that a consultant has been hired to complete the SR 160 Phase 2 final design phase. To reach this stage, the scope of work and cost estimate of the project were developed by the Department’s team. Then the Form 2a was submitted and approved. The scope, estimate and Form 2a documents served as a base for negotiations with the consultant. Originally the consultant fee estimate was...

Indoor Air Pollution

...Indoor air quality has become more and more important because most people spend more than 80% of their time indoors (APS, 2008). In the last several years, a growing number of scientific evidences have indicated that the air within homes, offices, or other indoor environment can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air (Sheldon, 1994). Indoors, the concentration of some harmful chemical and biological matters may be hundreds times higher than that outdoors (Sheldon, 1994). Thus, the situation that chemical, biological, and/or physical matters in the indoor air that cause harmful effects to human health is defined as indoor air pollution. One source of indoor air pollutant is chemical matter, which is caused by combustion, architecture material, and some other things. Combustion or burning is the sequence of exothermic chemical reactions between a fuel and an oxidant accompanied by the production of heat and conversion of chemical species (Wikipedia, Combustion, 2010). In the indoor environment, combustion refers to the use of oil, natural gas, wood, coal, charcoal, and tobacco. During this course, not only the oxygen in the house is consumed, but also much harmful gas like carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is poisonous to human, is produced and flood into the air. Especially in developing countries, where people cook food with burning wood or coal, the indoor air pollution is more serious (WHO, 2010). Another source of chemical...

Air Quality in Hong Kong

...Air pollution in Hong Kong is often so bad that it is impossible to see across Victoria Harbor due to all the haze and smog. The government did endeavor to modify the air quality but, sadly, it still deteriorates continually. Even worse, the Air Pollution Index recently hit a record high, which suggests that the air quality in Hong Kong is far lower than the international standard. It all shows that air pollution is just a growing problem and I’m writing to raise several concerns about air pollution and suggest various ways in which Hong Kong citizens can help reduce air pollution. Let us begin with the cause of the problems, which includes three main aspects: vehicle emissions, unplanned use of land, and cross-border pollution. The first aspect concerns the vehicle emissions. With the increasing number of private cars, and the slow introduction of environmentally friendly fuels, the amount of air pollutants released by vehicles keeps increasing, thereby tarnishing the air quality. Secondly, the unplanned use of land can also account for the problems. Due to the limited land supplied, Hong Kong tends to be densely populated while the buildings are usually designed to be as tall as possible. All the buildings therefore form a physical barrier to block the ventilation of air. Consequently, pollutants like suspended particles are trapped in air, causing the air to be polluted. Cross-border pollution is the third aspect. There are currently numerous factories built...

Earth Day

... One form of air pollution is photochemical smog. "Smog" is a contraction of the words "smoke" and "fog," and was originally used to describe air pollution caused by coal burning in London. Urban smog is photochemical because many of the chemicals found in urban air are formed by chemical reactions driven by sunlight. Among the many air pollutants in urban smog that are produced by photochemical reactions, one of the most abundant is ozone, O3 . Ground level ozone and other photochemical pollutants are formed in urban atmospheres by the reactions of oxides of nitrogen (mainly NO and NO 2 ) in the presence of hydrocarbons. In CHE 133 we learned about combustion reactions. A combustion reaction is a type of redox reaction in which a combustible material combines with an oxidizer to form oxidized products and generate heat. In a combustion reaction oxygen combines with another compound to form carbon dioxide and water. Oxides of nitrogen are byproducts of combustion processes. At the high temperatures generated during combustion, some of the N 2 and O 2 in air is converted to oxides of nitrogen and the higher the combustion temperature is, the greater are the amounts of oxides of nitrogen produced. These hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen participate in reactions that yield ozone and other pollutants which accumulate in fine particles suspended in the atmosphere. Although many of these constituents of photochemical smog have...

Pollution

...Air pollution is a major health risk concern globally. As industries and large developments continues, urban areas are subject to an increase of potential hazardous air pollution (BMC Public Health, Aug 2006) Reports has showed that carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide are just some of the reasons for hospital admissions for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases as well as ongoing health concerns. (BMC Public Health, Aug 2006) Respiratory symptoms in young children has become a major concern. Indoor pollution India has become a major concern for air pollution because they are exposed to some of the highest pollution levels in the world. Because of their cooking, using fuel, adult women and young children are the highest to be exposed to pollution causing acute respiratory infections (ARI) chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (CORP) and lung cancer. Improvements are being looked at for stoves with chimneys and other factors that may lower the risk of exposures. (Smith, Jun 2000)Epidemiological investigations has been used for at last 15 years in India to indicate pollutant. Outdoor pollution China, suffers from the most in outdoor pollution. Coal is a significant source of energy and constitutes for about 75% of all energy sources. (Kan, Chen, Hong, May 2009)Unfortunately, China primary consist of coal smoke, involving particulate matter (PM) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) as the predominantly air pollutants.(Kan, Chen, Hong, May 2009)Studies associated in China's...

Energy Summary

...Energy Summary Ch 11: Environmental Laws, Economics, and Ethics The nineties were characterized by the search for greater understanding of the concept and the importance of sustainable development, which was complemented by the fastest growing trends towards globalization, especially in relation to trade and technology. The conviction grew that there was an increasing number of global issues related to the environment that required international solutions. The Black Triangle, located at the borders of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland received its name from its extreme air pollution caused by rapid industrialization after the Second World War. Many air pollutants (sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide) are more strictly controlled in the past two decades and its impact has been reduced. In addition to causing or aggravating respiratory diseases, air pollution in the Black Triangle, especially sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, produced acid rain, wet deposition that have been made more acidic than normal rain. Acid rain is harmful to forests to aquatic ecosystems. Acid rain that penetrates the ground can dissolve nutrients such as calcium and magnesium can cause aluminum in the soil is loose. The forests on higher ground at greater risk because they are exposed to acidic clouds and fog, which contain more acidic than rain or snow and shed their nutrients to the leaves and buds. Hungary established the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern...

...Yesterday I watched a really popular documentary. A documentary about Chinese pollution problem has become a viral hit in the country over the weekend racking up over 100 million views in less than 24 hours. “China's Haze: Under the Doom”, a 143 minute presentation by former CCTV reporter Chai Jing lays the blame on a lack of government oversight as a major reason behind the country’s deteriorating air quality problem. Chai Jing said that “There are some things we know that the effects for improving air pollution is very little if we say it. But just because of the person who say it and do a little things, he can make things become more better and our heart can be relaxed. So looking back the war between the human and the smog, the history just create like that thousands and thousands of ordinary people in this world one day will say “No, I am not satisfied. I do not want to wait, I will no longer to abdicate, I will stand up and do a bit of things! What I would do is just at this moment, right now , right here, is just this body.” Thousands of children are being nurtured; the rivers, the sky, the earth should belong to them. We have responsibility to prove to them an energy to illuminate the world, and the world can be clean and beautiful. In the haze serious, we have at least one thing you can do is to protect yourself and your love. The future that I really prefer to see in China will like this: There is no longer PM2.5 in the air, which we breathe every day. The quality...

Environmental Pollution

...Environmental Pollution Shakale Phipps SCI/256 June 9, 2014 Ricardo Altschul Environmental Pollution In such a chaotic world, there are many contributors to the environment’s pollution. The number one transportation source; the automobile is the leading cause in the air pollution. Fortunately, advanced fuel technologies can drastically change the reduction in air pollution. Today’s road runners create over one third of the carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides within the atmosphere and twenty percent of the global warming pollution. Air pollution like such can cause major problems for the environment as well as for human health. With the creation of hybrid and electrical cars, the reduction of air pollution can be cut in half within the next twenty years by the decline of use in U.S. oil. People these days do not realize the significant role the automobile plays in our lives. With a car you can travel to work, school, business meetings, or even across country for that matter. In many urban, Southern California cities, air pollution has been a major issue since historical times. Yes, there were grievances about smoke in ancient Rome. The use of coal throughout the centuries caused neighboring cities to become very smoky places. Combined with the smoke, mass applications of sulfur dioxide were produced. With the mixture of sulfur dioxide and smoke, it created the “foggy” streets of ancient, London’s backdrop. Think of Sherlock Holmes. Similar situations occurred in...
