Description of Setting: (Describe setting, age group of children, number of children observed, materials available, activity observed and number of teachers present)
The room is called the purple room. All the walls in the room are light purple and the bottom of the walls are dark purple. As you walk in there are the children’s cubbies to the right at adult level. Each of the cubbies is labeled with the child’s name and picture in front of it. To the left was the telephone for the teachers and lower is a shelf with the sign in and out sheets for parents and teachers to sign. Over that shelf is the manipulative or table toys center there isn’t any carpeting on the floor. There are three shelves in the manipulative center all with different age appropriate manipulates. The shelves are labeled with pictures, and the name of the toys in Spanish and English. Next to that is the cozy center there is a long blue pillow on the floor in the middle of two shelves. One shelve has stuffed animals and the other ones has Shubert books. The center next to the cozy or safe center is the reading center. There are lots of colorful posters on the wall at child level. There are two shelves of books. The books seem to be in great condition and there are a variety of books to choose from. This center did have carpet on the floor. The carpet had floral designs. There is a blue leather child size couch that can fit two. There is also a miniature couch with no back that sort of looks like a small stool. Coming out of the reading

Center is two white trashcans. In front of the trashcans are two child size bathrooms. In the middle of the bathrooms is on child sized sink above the sink is the paper towel machine. Passing the bathrooms is the diaper changing table. Above the diaper changing table are little cubbies. In the cubbies there were different art materials and on the bottom of the diaper changing table is a pack of construction paper. Behind the corner of the diaper changing table there is the adult sized sink. Next to the adult sized sink there are the cots above the cot was the cot map. Beside the stacked up cots is a shelve on the wall with more art supplies. Below that is the art center. In the art center there is scissors for the children, fat round pencils, crayons, markers, color pencils, confetti, play dough, play dough toys, magazines, stacks of papers, glue, paint, variety of paint brushes, ribbon, googly eyes, pom poms, yarn, and glue sticks. There is a blue child size table with four red chairs around it. There is art work posted in that center. Besides the art center is home living. I saw a white and pink plastic table with a wooden container with wooden and plastic food in the middle. There are two thick plastic chairs in the table. Behind the table is a rack with different dress up clothes. I saw different cultural apparel. Next to the rack is a little closet with a red handle. Next to that was a shelve with kitchen stuff. Plates, cups, pans, food, measuring cups, cloth food, and plastic bowels. Next to that was a grey and light blue stove with storage at the bottom. Next to the stove is a white and yellow child sized play sink. Next to that sink is a shelve but the back is facing home living. On the back of that shelve are some large pictures of food. There was a picture of carrots, a fruit burger, and some vegetables. Next to that shelve is the entrance into the center. Next to the entrance is a white mini refrigerator. Then there is another shelve with a plastic book bag, ice cube makers, and telephones. On the bottom of the

February 19, March 12, April 2 shelve there were more telephones, a remote control, and two bins of baby dress up clothes. In the home living center there is a huge window looking out to the younger children’s playground. Coming out of home living right next to it there is the teachers table facing the home living area. Next to the teacher table is the emergency exit door. Beside the door there is a birthday board right next to it are the cubbies again. In the middle of the classroom there is the sand table. To a left upward angle there is a cage with a pretty big grey rabbit in it. There are 4 tables for the children to sit in the classroom. Each of the table sitting either four or five children. There was shamrocks painting above the window in home living and decorate letters under each cubby. Each center was labeled with pictures and words with English and Spanish. Also each center had a little poster with 3 spots to put a picture tag in. the teachers had posted the number of friends that could be in a center at a time. The age group of the children is three year olds to four year olds. There are 18 children enrolled in the classroom and two of them are four year olds. 17 children were present at the first observation. I observed one little boy who caught my attention. There were two teachers in the classroom and a floater that came by to do breaks. All the materials seemed in great condition and available to the children to play with. I observed free play in centers right after breakfast. Some children were still eating breakfast while others were already playing in centers.

February 19, 2013 at 8:40am through 9:10am- Child was eating breakfast. When he was done he got up and threw his plates away than went to the potty. He came out and washed his hands. Then he went to get his name tag to go in the home living center. There were already two friends in the home living center. He went towards the costume rack and grabbed an army print cap and put it on his head. Then he went to the shelve beside it and told his friends they were going to have a birthday party. He started getting food out and putting it in pans. Then he gave the two other children a pan full of plastic food. Then he put plastic ice cream in a cup and put it in the middle of the table from where they were sitting. He said are we ready to sing “happy birthday”? the other kids responded and said “yes”. They started singing “happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.” After the birthday sung he started pretending he was cramming the ice cream into his mouth. Then he walked over to another shelve and got a telephone and called his mom. He asked his mom if they were going to go to church today. I did not hear what mom responded to him on the play phone but he said “ok mom see you later love you mama” then he put the phone down and went back to the table with the other children and sat in a chair and started talking to the other two children.
March 19, 2013 9:40am through 10:15am Child was sitting down in his seat. He had a piece of white paper in front of him with lines. Different lines like straight and zig zag lines he had scissors in front of him. The teacher was telling the children they were going to cut the lines but you guys have to try to follow the line, but it’s ok if you don’t follow the line we are just practicing to cut lines. The child started cutting his lines not directly on the line but real close he went on to cut he next line and the next line straight down. And said “Ms.Mellisa look I did it” and showed the cut up paper to her. Ms. Mellisa said “great job baby give yourself a pat on the back” the child gave himself a pat on the back and continued to cut the paper. He tried from different angles to cut the whole paper up. Down to the little strips he would cut those out too. Then the teacher said “ok guys time to clean up our mess. Pick up all the paper and throw it in the trash can. He hurried about and picked up paper from his table and under his chair and threw it away.

I volunteered as a timer, which allowed me an up close and personal view of the kids I was observing.
