Today's society is different to the one that existed not so many years ago. Our society is constantly changing. The most important characteristics of our era may be the transformation, transmission and dominion of information. We live in an information society where the leading role has been given to new technologies, especially those devoted to information. Our society could not be imagined without new technologies and their role both in this society and in human life in general. With advances in technology, student study habits have dramatically changed. It's affected the way classes are taught, students learn theories and the way information is presented. Gone are the days of slaving over books in the library and scribbling down notes on paper. Modern technology has rapidly changed our world. It improves the length and quality of life. Although modern technology brings an enormous number of benefits for mankind, it causes many harmful effects as well. Modern technologies are very powerful because they rely on one of the most powerful genetic biases we do have — the preference for visually presented information. The human brain has a tremendous bias for visually presented information. Television, movies, videos, and most computer programs are very visually oriented and therefore attract and maintain the attention of young children. The problem with this is that many of the modern technologies are very passive. Because of this they do not provide children with the quality and quantity of crucial emotional, social, cognitive, or physical experiences they require when they are young. The developing child requires the right combination of these experiences at the right times during development in order to develop optimally. This cannot happen if the child is sitting for hours passively watching television. Modern technology...

Computer Gaming Effects on Academic Performance

In 2005 a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation: "Generation M: Media in the Lives of 8-18 year-olds", showed that over 80 percent of teenagers had a video game player in their home. The widespread use of video games has led to a series of questions. The most common question discusses the effects that the video/computer games have on the academic performance of the gamer. Researchers have found that each situation should be handled independently because the effects vary from individual to individual. Positive Effects Many people focus on the negative effects of these games and fail to see the opportunity for learning and growth. According to Raise Smart Kids: “The Good and Bad Effects of Video Games” there are several positive effects that come from spending time playing video games. Most games do not teach kids math, history and other subjects, however, they do provide students indirect opportunities to learn principles that can help them in their academic pursuits. Certain types of video games can help train kids to follow instructions as well as helping them develop their problem solving and logical thought processes. These skills translate directly to the classroom as students are asked by teachers to complete tasks and are presented problems that require them to use logical problem solving skills. Also video games are forms of art, thus aesthetics are part of their design. It’s also shown in some studies that computer gaming helps the brain, especially to the young at age, to develop their logic skills. “Computer-based video games can clearly facilitate students’ learning performance. ...Research on Educational Impact of Games A Literature Review Institute for Games for Learning NYU Education/Assessment Group CUNY Education/Assessment Group White Paper # 02/2009 Version 0.1 June 25, 2009 Florrie Ng Helen Zeng Jan L. Plass Gaming Literature Coding In response to researchers’ calls for more systematic investigations of the use of games for learning, we conducted an extensive literature review on this topic. By surveying prior research, we examined the themes that emerged, the methodology employed, and the findings yielded, the ultimate goal being to identify knowledge gaps in the literature. To this end, we reviewed the relevant research conducted in the last 15 years by following the procedures outlined below. (a) Using the widely used social science database PsycINFO, we searched for articles which focused on both games and learning. The keywords chosen were “gam*” and either “learn*”, “teach*”, or “educat*” (the wildcard * can stand for any of a defined subset of all possible characters; for example “gam*” includes “game,” “games,” “gaming,” etc.). This generated about 4000 peer-reviewed articles from the earliest date (i.e., before 1960) to the end of 2008. (b) Given that studies conducted a decade ago tended to be less rigorous methodologically or yield obsolete results, we decided to focus our attention on more recent research. Once we narrowed down the time period to the years of 1995 to 2008, about 2400 peer-reviewed articles were left in......

Gaming Gear Market

...The Effect of eSports Growth on the Development of Gaming Gear and Innovations in the Distribution Model Background and History As technology has advanced in recent years, forms of entertainment have shifted from the activities of the outdoor to the games played indoors. Specifically, the emergence of computer gaming as a spectator sport has influenced many firms to develop products that satisfy the unique need of professional and recreational gamers alike. Much like the development of popular sports, such as basketball or soccer, the growth of eSports has created an industry that produces supplementary products required to enjoy the sport. However, instead of basketball and soccer shoes and clothing, the industry if focused on creating high-tech “gaming gear”. These products include higher function keyboards and mice, glasses to protect from glare, and headsets and microphones for gaming oriented communication. As more and more individuals become consumers of this market, the competition in gaming has increased, and the need for better and more sophisticated “gaming gear” equipment has evolved. Initially, with the introduction of computer gaming systems, the basic mouse and keyboard were essential components of most computer games. One of the first innovations in computer gaming history is the introduction of the Apple II and Commodore 64 in the late 1970’s. These were two basic gaming consoles based on the QWERTY keyboards.
