By Nick Pernisco, SJMLE Editor

In the past five years, social media websites have become ubiquitous, giving young people a new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. This new form of communication depends on usercreated content, not mass produced messages coming from large media companies. But as with other media before it, social media's rise to prominence has experienced some very serious growing pains. Companies like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have struggled to balance an inviting interactive environment with the ultimate pursuit of profits. Thanks

to these sites, our expectations of the web, as well as society, have changed. This issue of the Student Journal for Media Literacy Education aims to explore some of the issues related to social media, and a generation fully engaged in this interactive world. The main focus is popular social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, and LinkedIn, but other social networking sites are explored as well. All articles in the Journal have been written by college students in Santa Monica College’s Reading The Media

course in Spring 2010, under my supervision. The students selected from a list of topic related to current issues in social media. I reviewed all of the articles, and offered suggestions and guidance, but the students were allowed to make the final decisions on all of their work. The research, analyses, and conclusions are the students’ own. I hope you enjoy this premiere issue of the Student Journal for Media Literacy Education. Critically Assess the Effect of Social Media on Society

...Critically assess the effect of Social Media on society Social media as defined by Andreas M and Michael (2010, p. 61) is “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.” Social media platforms include chat rooms, blogging web sites, social networking sites, forums, and also text messages and e-mail (Luxton, June and Fairall, 2012). The most popular social networking site, Facebook has made such an influence on society that from 2004 to 2011 the number of users registered to the site increased from 1 million to about 1 billion users worldwide (Yahoo Finance, 2012). With such vast figures social media is bound to have an impact on the way society operates, either positively or negatively, or both. These will be critically analyzed in this essay, identifying the most crucial impacts it has on our society. With the rapid increase in the awareness and use of social networking sites, it has provided positive contributions to how society functions. First and foremost, social networking has grown to become a critical part of a business’s marketing strategies, and if managed efficiently, will prove to be a major factor for its success. Social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter have provided an easy-to-access platform for people to share their views, preferences, and experiences about brands and products. Once this information gets widespread......

Social media is a platform that is used to connect people and interact with other individuals having similar interests to oneself through of applications or websites. Social networking can be viewed from different aspects depending on one's opinion. Impacts brought by social networking can both be negative and positive, and this trickles down to the intentions of setting up that particular network of interaction. It will, therefore, be unjust for me to say that social media has improved or brought complications in our lives. This paper would like to review different research outcomes and opinions from both sides of the divide. My opinion is that society has gained a lot and yet to gain even more from social media. Social media has given a platform to communicate effectively to many across the world, use of the social network as means to share reading materials has helped in reducing illiteracy and improve human enlightenment. Why Social Media Has a Negative Impact on Our Society

...Social Medias Negative impact in our society * Social media plays a major part in the way today’s youth are growing up. Although it may have its benefits, it causes a huge negative impact in our society. Social media has drastically changed since it was introduced in 1979 when Usenet systems were first conceived by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis, and even since Mark Zuckerberg created “Facebook” in 2004. Social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Omegle expose today’s adolescence to things they shouldn’t be seeing, and it is as easy as logging in. The following paragraphs will talk about the three main negative effects that social media plays on youth today. These are; one, continuously putting users of Social Media, (and even the internet), in danger, two, damaging face to face socializing skills, and three, exposing our youth to explicit materials. * * Firstly, Social media poses many threats in today’s society. It is accessible from any Computer, Phone, Tablet or IPod with an internet connection. This means that it is easier for children as young as 8 or 9 to connect to a social media site. This in turn exposes them to nudity, swearing and the worst of all; pedophiles and rapists. Rheana Murray of New York Daily News stated that a whopping one in ten profiles online are fake (May 2013). This means that at least 10% or more of a child’s friends on Facebook could be phony. The Carly Ryan incident in 2006 proves that the internet is a very dangerous......
