Effective Communication in the Workplace

ABSTRACT

Effective communication is essential for any business to succeed. By using effective communication we can better understand a person’s situation, do what we can to solve it and overall have a better connection with that individual. When communicating with clients a person must use their knowledge of the products and personal skills to connect and make the sale. Effective communication should be utilized everywhere. Many of my personal experiences with effective communication comes from my workplace: Clinique.

Clinique goes above and beyond to help guide and train their employees on how to communicate with our cliental. Clinique’s following includes men and women of all races, which means we have to have the knowledge to understand what the client is trying to find. Clinique consults are sent to a two day seminar that is called I AM CLINQUE. It is the first of many training classes consultants are sent to. There we learn about the history of the brand, skin care, dermatology, and Clinique’s products. This seminar sets up the foundation every consultant needs in order to communicate with clients to find the perfect products for their skin. Without this first class the consultants couldn’t properly skin type and access the particular problems a client was having with their skin.

The information learned at the seminar is the key for effective communication at Clinique. When a client comes to the counter with specific issues with his/her skin the consultant can skin type the client and ask the appropriate questions to get the proper regime the client should be following. Working at Clinique has it challenges with communication, not just with the right products to suggest but just understanding the client in general. People from all different cultures come to the counter and as consultants we have to be prepared to be patient, listen, and then communicate effectively so that both parties achieve the set goal. These skills consultants learn through training are vital for business and sales.

One of my personal experiences with effective communication in the workplace was a couple weeks ago when a client came to the counter wanting advice on how to prevent her skin from aging. As she was asking questions I began to quickly realize it was hard for me to understand her accent. I began to complement her on her accent and discovered she was from Brazil. While I was faced with a challenge I proceeded slowly by really listening and trying to understand what she was looking for. I began to pull some reference guides with pictures of products to help both of us in search of what she needed. I pointed to one of our products for de-aging and her eyes lit up in excitement as that was the one she was looking for. We were both very happy as we had spent about fifteen minutes with each other by now. I then followed through with the sale and she was appreciative that I took the time to understand her concerns and not try to sell her something she didn’t want or need.

Overall effective communication is key for any aspect in life. By using tools and training I received from the seminar I attended I was prepared when any challenge came my way. In the end the client left happy and with the products that her skin needed. When our clients come to the counter I try to not only help them with their skin concerns but really make a connection and build a trust factor with them. This helps build my personal cliental that will always come back asking for me specifically for that one on one personal experience. These reasons are why people are so brand loyal to Clinique and why we have been a number one cosmetic company since 1968. This is what Clinique strives for with using effective communication with our clients.
