Effective Communication in the Workplace
BUS100 Week 5 Assign 1

Abstract Good communication skills and a proper understanding of effective communication will help both in avoiding conflict and dealing with disruptive conflict. It is essential to teamwork that all members of the team have a clear understanding and active awareness of their common targets.
All employees must readily cooperate with one another to enable everyone to achieve his or her common goals. Communication is the best tool for building cooperative relationships between employees because effective communication among team members is vital to the success of the company.

Effective Communication in the Workplace

Communication is the transfer of intended meaning to include; ideas, opinions, orders/instructions and feelings. Different methods of communication are verbal, written, body language and examples (action or lack of action). More and more companies are converting to a formal team approach to operations. This is happening because working in teams provides the company and it’s employees both tangible and intangible benefits such as: *Improved communications in all directions *An increase in cooperative attitude among members *Increased awareness of the contribution and role of each team member *Increased efficiency in quantity and quality of work accomplished Feedback is probably the most under-used yet most helpful skill in communication. You have to work within the general rules of the business that have been set to create customer value. A very important tool in this is standardized work. Standardized work helps in identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and waste reduction. Other boundaries in the standard work boundaries are the ones’ that allow every job to be done with the greatest effectiveness and quality. I remember, while employed in a paint shop for an automotive company, we were having issues with bad paint splatters and not meeting production quota. The paint supervisor kept insisting we work overtime to meet the production quota. After this failed, due to tired employees working seven days, he asked for our feedback. I suggested to him that if we ran the parts on both sides we would meet the production quota and would be freed up to perform quality checks on the parts. He was reluctant, but he went along with this idea, against his better judgement. The results were an increase in productivity, better quality parts, and a decrease in overtime. The supervisor was happy because the paint manager praised him for the change, which increased production and decreased money being spent on overtime hours. As a result, more quality parts went out, which made the company money. The feedback/input from the employees was essential in the decision-making process, which in turn led to positive changes to the company’s guidelines. To me, the communication was effective, because the supervisor gave us a chance to voice our opinions and state why the process wasn’t working. It also opened his eyes as to how changing the process would benefit the company long term. It gave us a sense of accomplishment, as it was our feedback that led to adjusting the procedure, which led to more productivity within the company and more business opportunities for the company.
