Abstract
This paper test students’ facebook usage and their academic performance. The paper was also intended to find how pervasive the use of facebook by University students plays a role in their academic success. A 20 question questionnaire was designed and sent out to approximately 150 students of different Universities in Nigeria. To capture the main types of University, a Federal University, a State University and a Private University cut across the nation were chosen. Of the questionnaire sent out, 81% of them were within the age of 18 to 21. The Independent variables measured how actively students used facebook, including how much time they spend on facebook, how often they update their status, post on friends’ walls, comment on others’ pages, the level of their privacy settings, and how many friends and photo albums they have. In order to accurately measure students’ academic achievement, we had student’s self‐report their in‐class participation, attendance, as well as grade point average. Six pre‐determined hypotheses were tested. First, the more time a student spends on facebook, the lower grade point average the student has. Secondly, the higher a student’s privacy settings are on facebook, the higher that student’s grade point average is. Thirdly, the more a student updates his or her facebook status, the less likely they are to have good class attendance. Fourthly, the more time a student spends on facebook, the less likely they are to participate in class. Fifthly, the more friends a student has on…...

...The Impact of Social Media use on Academic Performance at one Urban University: A Pilot Study Sam Mozee, MPPA Mississippi Urban Research Center Abstract. The purpose of this study was to begin exploring the possible impact of social media use on the academic performance of students attending one urban university. The study's primary goal is to identify key themes, trends, and/or perceptions that can be used as a foundation for more in-depth empirical research, and can be used to develop policy recommendations to deal with this growing phenomenon. A qualitative research design was used, and three preliminary research questions were formed to guide this study: (1) How common is the use of social media (i.e., Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and LinkIn) among college students? (2) For those students who do utilize social networking sites, on average how much time do they spend on those sites collectively per day and/or per week? and (3) How does the academic performance of students compare between students who utilize social media sites and students who do not use social media sites? Findings from this study seem to confirm perceptions of high student usage of social media among college students; however, they also seem to contradict other research literature findings regarding intensity of usage and gender-usage inclinations. Introduction Recently, there has been considerable discussion regarding the frequent use of social media tools (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Xanga,......

...http://mashable.com/2011/04/27/facebook-effect-students/ For Students, What Is the “Facebook Effect” on Grades? April 27, 2011 by Jolie O'Dell66 Social media has several effects on academic work — some more positive than others. But what is social networking’s overall impact on college students’ performance? According to data gathered from several sources byOnlineEducation.net, Facebook and Twitter are used to great benefit— sometimes. Students welcome online engagement and resources; around 75% of student respondents said they’d like to do some online collaboration for class, in fact. Also, social media may have a positive impact on students’ sense of themselves in the community. Social media-using students were twice as likely as other students to feel well-liked by their peers and to participate in extracurricular activities. And 20% more of Facebook-using students (as compared to students who didn’t use Facebook) said they felt connected to their school and community. However, negative effects abound. Students who use Facebook and hit the books simultaneously found their multitasking led to 20% lower grades than those of their more focused peers. Facebook-using students also made less money during school from part-time work, putting in around five hours per week as opposed to 16 hours per week for a typical, unplugged counterpart. Not only do grades and finances suffer, but students might actually end up feeling more depressed or lonely. Almost half of students......

Wikipedia.org, 2012 cited that with the rapid growth of people who use or have access to the Internet, millions of people can stay connected together using the web provision called Social Networking Sites (SNSs). According to Chelly and Mataillet, 2012 that social networking sites are interactive web links that give people an opportunity to create, share and publish information, build communities and communicate around the world. Moreover, SNSs provide place for other online activities like searching information, gaming, shopping, viewing videos, listening music, uploading and viewing pictures, reading posts, blogging, and online banking; and, those activities are positively the reason why many students are interested in checking out these sites (Asilo et al, 2010).
