A video game can be a big problem in the world. From Douglas Gentile of Iowa State University found that “8.5 percent of American youths ages 8 to 18 who play video games show multiple signs of behavioral addiction.’’ This helps my claim by showing how 8.5% of Americans are affected by the video game in the U.S. Douglas also found out the “pathological gamers did worse in school, had trouble paying attention in class and reported feeling "addicted." Four times as many boys as girls were considered pathological gamers. Thes quota help my claim by showing how people are doing badly in school can affect people when they leave school and they are also getting lower grade compared to the people that are not addicted to the video game. “With

...may hinder one’s everyday life. Video game addiction may display itself in the following way: social isolation, excessive amounts of time spent on gaming, diminished imagination, irregular mood swings, too much focus on the in-game achievements, behavior, which is modeled by the rules and realities of any given game (Lindsey 2007). Video game addiction is not going anywhere, as it recently acquired enough infamy to make it worthy of inclusion into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, under the “Conditions for Further Study” heading. It was deemed worthy of inclusion by the American Psychiatric Association, due to enough evidence, as well as, the fact that video game overuse results have similar symptoms and effects as seen in other psychological addictions. It has been noted that video game addiction bears many similarities to impulse control disorder and compulsive gambling. According to Griffiths (2010) all addictions, no matter if of behavioral or chemical origin, are essentially all about non-stop reinforcement and rewards. Moreover, Griffiths believed that each addiction exhibits six foundational components: mood modification, importance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse. Other scholars have the belief that the reason for addiction lies in the nature of...

Richard Wood Addiction Essay

...Richard Wood is one such skeptic, claiming that excessively playing videogames ought not to be compared to gambling since they are not enough alike (“Concept of Videogame ‘Addiction’” 170). His evidence for this is case studies in which he portrays familial strain and stress put on the gamer. This, he believes, leads many gamers to diagnose themselves as addicted when they may not be (176). Wood claims that clinicians and researchers should be cautious when claiming anyone is addicted because it may lead to misunderstandings and an undue amount of concern on the part of the family (176). Wood also believes those who are classified as “addicted” may be playing games excessively because they have underlying problems or poor time management skills (177). Wood does concede that some people play video games excessively is not in dispute, but defining the point at which the behaviour becomes problematic is far from clear. There is little doubt that some people play games too frequently and for longer periods than is good for them physically, socially, and/or psychologically” (172). Mark Griffiths refutes Wood’s position, stating that those who have underlying problems but are addicted to a substance have no less of an addiction because...

Motives Predict Addictive Play Behavior in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games 1 Daria J. Kuss, M.Sc., M.A., Jorik Louws, M.Sc.,2 and Reinout W. Wiers, Ph.D. 3 Abstract Recently, there have been growing concerns about excessive online gaming. Playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) appears to be particularly problematic, because these games require a high degree of commitment and time investment from the players to the detriment of occupational, social, and other recreational activities and relations. A number of gaming motives have been linked to excessive online gaming in adolescents and young adults. We assessed 175 current MMORPG players and 90 nonplayers using a Web-based questionnaire regarding their gaming behavior, problems as consequences of gaming, and game motivations and tested their statistical associations. Results indicated that (a) MMORPG players are significantly more likely to experience gaming-related problems relative to nonplayers, and that (b) the gaming motivations escapism and mechanics significantly predicted excessive gaming and appeared as stronger predictors than time investment in game. The findings support the necessity of using measures that distinguish between different types of online games. In addition, this study proves useful regarding the current...

Separately, computer games are the most popular way of entertainment among 12-25 year old males (Small GW, Vorgan G,2008). Method This research, including two types of methods in it and they are qualitative and quantitative. I will interview two men, one of them is a gamer addicted and one of them has a 16 years child that is gaming addicts. Also, I will distribute 50 surveys. I will do two types of surveys, one of them for parents and one for a teenager. I have chosen to distribute the parents’ surveys in malls like Mirdif city center and Dubai Mall. However, the other survey I will distribute it in the HCT. Conclusion In conclusion, it is clear that games addiction is an important problem that face people from long time and increased with the new technology. So we all should limit the time our child’s spend on a computer, try spending more time with your children, like play with them outdoors. So any child can be addicted to video games, but we can reduce these chances if there are atmosphere of comfort...

Intriduction of Computer Addiction

...of computers so much so that it interferes with daily activities. It is a disorder whereby the individual devotes oneself to activities on the internet such as checking of e-mails, going on social networking sites or plays computer games for 12 hour or more at a time. Computer addicts turn to the internet/computers to attempt to change their moods, overcome anxiety, deal with depression, reduce the feeling of isolation or loneliness, or to distract themselves from overwhelming problems that they are facing. The groups of people that are especially susceptible are the elderly, children and teenagers. This is because they might not realise the extent of their dependency on the computer. Effects of Computer Addiction Computer addiction can have a number of negative effects on individuals physically or psychologically. Psychologically, the most critical are social. As the user spend increasing amount of time on the computer, he/she will start to drift apart from friends and family. Relationship between the user and his/her family and friends will shrivel as he/she stops going for social gatherings with friends and family members to set aside more time for the computer. Ultimately, immoderate use of the computer can take an emotional toll...

Television, DVDs, video games, the Internet, and smart phones all play a formative role in children’s development. The term ‘‘technology’’ subsumes a large variety of somewhat independent items, and it is no surprise that current research indicates causes for both optimism and concern depending upon the content of the technology, the context in which the technology immerses the user, and the user’s developmental stage. Furthermore, because the field is still in its infancy, results can be surprising: video games designed to be reasonably mindless result in widespread enhancements of various abilities, acting, we will argue, as exemplary learning tools. Counterintuitive outcomes like these, besides being practically relevant, challenge and eventually lead to refinement of theories concerning fundamental principles of brain plasticity and learning. ...The Benefits of Playing Video Games Isabela Granic, Adam Lobel, and Rutger C. M. E. Engels Radboud University Nijmegen Video games are a ubiquitous part of almost all children’s and adolescents’ lives, with 97% playing for at least one hour per day in the United States. The vast majority of research by psychologists on the effects of “gaming” has been on its negative impact: the potential harm related to violence, addiction, and depression. We recognize the value of that research; however, we argue that a more balanced perspective is needed, one that considers not only the possible negative effects but also the benefits of playing these games. Considering these potential benefits is important, in part, because the nature of these games has changed dramatically in the last decade, becoming increasingly complex, diverse, realistic, and social in nature. A small but significant body of research has begun to emerge, mostly in the last five years, documenting these benefits. In this article, we summarize the research on the positive effects of playing video games, focusing on four main domains: cognitive, motivational, emotional, and social. By integrating insights from developmental, positive, and social psychology, as well as media psychology, we propose some candidate mechanisms by which playing video games may foster real-world psychosocial benefits. Our aim is to provide strong enough evidence and a theoretical rationale to inspire new programs of research on the largely unexplored...

Effect of Computer Usage to the Academic Performance of the Selected Senior Students

...are increasingly realistic and technologically advanced. Social networking has even made its way into the video game industry with online gaming. These virtual worlds can be complicated and perplexing to parents, which is why it's important for you to understand what your child is playing and when to get worried. Did You Know? * In 2009, over 11 million people played World of Warcraft, an online, subscription fee-based multiplayer game. * According to one study, nearly 1 in 10 young gamers displayed behavior patterns similar to addiction.1 * The Kaiser Family Foundation found that 8- to 18-year-olds are exposed to an average of 10 hours and 45 minutes of media each day. Whether your child is an avid gamer or rarely picks up a controller, it's important to understand the world of video games--especially in the age of online gaming--so you can make your child's experience with games both a positive and a beneficial one. ————— 1. Douglas Gentile, “Pathological Video Game Use among Youth 8 to 18: A National Study,” CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the study The youth of today no longer seem to spend their leisure activities like in the olden days; outdoor games or playing with toys, instead, they spend their free time in their homes, internet cafés or computer shops simply to satisfy their hunger; and that hunger is Online Gaming. ...research has examined these claims, consistent relationships between social competence and online video game involvement have yet to be established. The current work (N = 515) aimed to examine the extent to which online video game involvement may support, or undermine, the development and maintenance of traditional social skills. The results indicate that there are unique relationships between social skills and video game involvement within online gaming populations. However, among online video game players, these links were not as negative or broad as hypothesized. The results of this assessment dispute the anecdotal attribution of a global level of social ineptitude amongst online video game players and provide insight into the potential effects of online video game...

Internet addiction has been considered as a serious threat to mental health and the excessive use of the Internet has been linked to a variety of negative psychosocial consequences. The aim of this review is to identify all empirical studies to date that used neuroimaging techniques to shed light upon the emerging mental health problem of Internet and gaming addiction from a neuroscientific perspective. Neuroimaging studies offer an advantage over traditional survey and behavioral research because with this method, it is possible to distinguish particular brain areas that are involved in the development and maintenance of addiction. A systematic literature search was conducted, identifying 18 studies. These studies...
