Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Our study is about “The Perception of the High School Students of Palawan Hope Christian School SY 2012-2013 regarding the usage of ebook”. An electronic book (variously, e-book, ebook, digital book) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, and produced on, published through, and readable on computers or other electronic devices. Sometimes the equivalent of a conventional printed book, e-books can also be born digital. The Oxford Dictionary of English defines the e-book as “an electronic version of a printed book, but e-books can and do exist without any printed equivalent. E-books are usually read on dedicated e-book readers. Personal computers and some mobile phones can also be used to read e-books. Students now experiencing difficulty in bringing many books in school, e-book becomes very useful now days because it’s a digital device that contains various books in this device. We will know how this device will affect the students when they start to use and know this device. This device is too expensive to buy, but this will affect students of bringing their heavy books in school.
Statement of the Problem Generally, this study will find out The Perception of the High School Students of Palawan Hope Christian School SY 2012-2013 regarding the usage of ebook it will seek the answers for the following question: 1. What are the uses of e-book that will affect your academic performance? 2. What will be the effects using e-book in school? 3. Do you think it will be easily to carry e-book in school?
Significance of the Study The researchers wanted to know the opinion and effects of e-book to the students which can help them to bring easily in school. The teachers will have an idea on e-book that they will easily discuss, and teach in the class using this e-book. The school will know the effects of the e-book to the students and teachers and will it positive or negative. The Country will have the idea of increasing the popularity of the e-book and will support all schools using this device.
Scope and Limitations of the Study The study was limited to the students in which e-book users are not the only factor that affect their academic performance. The study covered only high school students of Palawan Hope Christian School. This study cannot aim to find out the effects of e-book users to the academic performance of elementary students. The study was also limited to the respondents in which there is a tendency that they will not answer the questions given to them honestly and they will not try to answer the questions if they did not find it understandable.

Definition of Key Terms Conceptual Definition

E-book – is a device that can help students, and teachers at school that will easily carry things in school


Related Studies A recent article by Paul Biba at Teleread gave some more definitive numbers on the popularity of e-readers and digital editions. The information came from a survey by Harris Interactive from over 2,000 adult respondents in February this year.
One of the larger surprises from the data was the lack of age polarization in the use of e-readers. Unlike the very typical divide in the adoption of new technology, e-reading has worked its way into the lives of as much as 30% of the population of adults, despite the recent Bowker study that showed that teenagers are less likely to opt for ereading than older adults. The Harris results actually indicate that the rise in e-reader use can be a positive indicator for publishing companies who are taking steps to embrace ebook publication, as this purchase information shows:
“The rise of eReaders may actually be a positive for publishing companies who are embracing electronic books. Among those who are currently using an eReader, three in ten (29%) say they typically read more than 20 books in an average year, while one in five (21%) say they read between 11 and 20 books and one-quarter (24%) read between 6 and 10 books. So, almost three-quarters of eReader users are reading 6 or more books in an average year. Among those who do not use an eReader, the numbers are reversed as one in five (18%) typically reads no books in an average year, one in five (19%) typically reads between 1 and 2 books and one in five (21%) typically reads between 3 and 5 books. So, three in five non eReader users are reading 5 or fewer books on average in a year.
“Purchase behavior is similar. Over one-third of those who do not use an eReader (36%) say they do not purchase any books in a typical year while one in five eReader users purchase over 20 (20%) and between 11 and 20 books (21%) in a typical year.”

Chapter 3
Research Design
The researchers used descriptive for their research design.

The Subject The respondents of this study were all high school students of Palawan Hope Christian School composed of High I students, High II students, High III students, and High IV students.

Validation of the Instrument The researchers submitted the questionnaire to the adviser for approval. It was then returned for more revision, until the questionnaire was proven valid.

Data Gathering Procedure The researchers after validating the instrument asked permission from the Principal. The researchers then had a survey; the respondents will answer the survey, and then the researcher will retrieve the data

Data Processing Method Having retrieved the questionnaire from the respondents, the researchers tabulated the data received.

Statistical Treatment The researchers treated the data by using the following formula:
