EGN 2030-Ethics and Legal Aspects in Engineering (Fall 2014) FEEDS

Course Description:

Codes of ethics, professional responsibilities and rights, law and engineering, contracts, torts, and evidence.

Course Objectives

1. To gain an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility. 2. To learn to work with other class members as part of a multi-disciplinary team. 3. To apply knowledge of ethical concepts in a practical sense. 4. To understand the impact of engineering problems/solutions in a national and global context. 5. To understand and incorporate ethical precepts into present and future professional assignments.

Grading: 1) Final examination. No make-up examination will be offered unless it is an emergency excused by a medical doctor. Final exam is worth 40% of grade. FEEDS students must take final exam at scheduled time in class. 2) Group paper/presentation. Group paper/presentation is worth 40% of grade. FEEDS students must present their group paper in person in class. 3) Homework. Homework is worth 20% of grade.

Requirements for group paper/presentations

This deliverable must consist of a PowerPoint presentation and a hard copy of the report. The report must provide:
(1) A detailed outline of the case being studied consisting of the main engineering, ethical and legal issues.
(2) An analysis of the ethical dilemmas of the engineers involved.
(3) Use information contained in the text in Chapter 2-A Practical Ethics Toolkit, notes, handouts, ASCE webinar, and additional reference information.
(4) Where possible, suggest possible alternative courses of action or solutions.
(5) References must be cited correctly. Project should not be based solely on internet references. Points will be deducted if only internet references are cited.
(6) A draft of the group paper is due by October 31, 2014. Failure to submit a draft typed version of the project will result in a significant reduction in the project grade for all individuals in the group.
KEY: The key to the case study is an analysis of the ethics violations in the ASCE and NSPE Code of Ethics and the various ways to analyze ethics violations and ethics tools covered in the book, covered in the notes, ASCE webinar, etc. Your grade will be based on the extent to which you have addressed the ethics violations and your use of the ethics toolkit as covered in this class.

The narrative for the project should not exceed 8 double-spaced pages. Please cite all references completely as is done in any research paper. I will place students in groups myself. I am expecting groups of 7 students and presentations limited to no more than 15-20 minutes.

Some are factual and some are fictional but realistic. Additional cases can be found on the Online Ethics Center (www.online ethics.org) and Texas A & M’s Ethics website (http://ethics.tamu.edu/casestudies.aspx). The Online Ethics Center contains a wealth of cases and essays. See page 207 of our text for additional information.

Homework

1. For HW#1, please coordinate with your group which I will assign and answer the questions on the “Suggested Assignment” for Henry’s Daughters. The Suggested Assignment is contained in the Study Guide which I will post on Blackboard. Please include a cover page with the course number, my name, date, and clearly identify all the student group names. I will provide a link to watch the video. I strongly urge you to watch the video in the lab in the engineering school. 2. CLASS RULES 1. Laptop computers, tablets, cell phones, and other electronic devices are not permitted. 2. Please use the restroom before class. Please do not leave unless there is an emergency. If you do leave, you may be asked not to return. 3. If you should arrive late, please take your seat quietly so not to disrupt others.

FEEDS STUDENTS ONLY FEEDS students are to email all their homework to dontsmit@fiu.edu before 12 noon on the date the homework is due. This is Ms. Dontay Smith and she will see to it that your homework is submitted to me during class every week. It is strongly recommended that FEEDS students watch the lecture as soon as possible after the lecture is presented on Friday evenings. It is available for 1 week only. There are 2 sections of the class but the FEEDS students will do the same homework as the students who attend class. FEEDS students must attend class for their presentations and for the final exam. The date for the final exam is set, the room number will be announced during the term. Please review Blackboard at least once per week for handouts and announcements. Homework will not be acccepted by email or via Blackboard.
