Electra by Sophocles is a play about a broken family. Clytemnestra who was the former wife of Agamemnon made the choice to murder Agamemnon when he came back from the Trojan War. Clytemnestra and Agamemnon had three living children name Orestes, Electra, and Chysothemis. After the murder of their father, Electra sent their brother away so that he can grow up in a safe place and come back and help avenge their dad. Electra stayed in town and spent almost her entire life dwelling on the past. Electra wanted justice for her father and would do almost anything to get it. Justice is an important theme in this story but trying but trying to get justice in the wrong way can often lead to revenge. Electra allowed her father’s death to take a toll on her life which stopped it completely. Most of her days were spent praying and grieving about Orestes returning home to Mycenae. Orestes and Chysothemis did not dwell much on the past but Electra took it to another level. Electra was trying to get justice for her father and then that turned into planning revenge. In the story Electra states “I know that my behavior is unseemly, and becomes me ill. But then the enmity on your part, and your treatment, compel me in my own despite to do thus; for base deeds are taught by base.”(Sophocles 328) This quote shows that Electra does not have any boundaries when it comes to mourning the death of her father. The author made her become so consumed with the situation that she started to become a bad person. She was very aware that the situation was changing her for the worst but she still carried out her plans. Electra wanted Clytemnestra and Aegishus to pay for murdering her father. She felt that they should suffer the same way. Electra stated “For if the hapless dead is to lie in dust and nothingness, while the slayers pay not with blood for blood, all regard for man, all fear of heaven will vanish from the earth.”(Sophocles 317) This quote shows that Electra is not sure what justice is but she knows that she wants them to pay by death. Her mother’s reason for killing her father was justice also. Her mother does not take blame for the murder of her husband because she said that it was for justice. The author is showing that Electra wants justice but it seems more like revenge. Electra’s mother killed their father because of something bad that he did which sent Iphigenia to her death. Iphigenia was their daughter who got sacrificed. Electra still did not care that this was her reason for killing their father. She was so into getting revenge that no one could stop her. Her life was driven by the murder of her father. Orestes came back to town to help her get justice for the killing of their father. The author showed that Electra convinced Orestes to carry out her plans for her. The author did not allow Electra to kill her mother but he allowed Orestes to do the work for her and kill their mother. Electra did not go by the right way to get justice. She could have made many different choices. Dwelling on the death of her father changed her character for the worst. Electra and her siblings all suffered from the same circumstances but she was the one who stopped her life to focus on it. The author was showing how different people react to the same situation. Electra was affected the most and her suffering affected Orestes so he felt that he had to do things to make her happy and feel like she is getting justice for her father. Orestes carried out murders for Electra. He did all the dirty work for her. This was definitely not justice this was murder and seemed more like revenge. She was happy and excited listening to Orestes kill their mother and this shows that she is no better person than they are. Their mother and her lover were both murdered by Orestes. This was their way of getting justice for their father by killing the people who killed him. Their justice turned into revenge because they actually killed people instead of taking a different route. Justice is not supposed to be violent but their actions were very violent.
Electra could have went on with her life but she chose to focus on something that would heal with time. Instead she brought more hurt to her family by allowing her brother to kill their mother. Two wrongs do not make a right but Electra thought it did. The author made some great choices with this play. Out of the three children he allowed Electra to be the most hung up on the father’s murder and he allowed Orestes to assist her in what was supposed to be justice but seemed more like revenge. Sometimes trying to receive justice while angry can turn into revenge. Electra allowed her emotions to take over her during her time of grieving.

Live Theater: Oresteia Fractum

...Professor Wall English 1B Play Response Live Theater: Oresteia Fractum When I looked at the name of the play, I was very curious about what Oresteia Fractum is and how fun it will be. I was quite looking forward to watching it because it was my first time to attend a formal theater in my new American life, and I also watched the promo on YouTube before I went there. On March 11, which is Sunday, I watched John Wilk’s Oresteia Fractum at City College of San Francisco Diego Rivera Theatre, which is directed by John Wilk. It presents an original experimental adaptation of Aeschylus' Greek trilogy based on the end of the Trojan War and the murder of Agamemnon entitled Oresteia Fractum. The piece is a collaboration exploring the "tragic" mode in modern theatrical language, with original alternative music, choreography and multimedia elements. Eric Iverson and Tommi Ko are the musicians. Choreography by Christy Funsch, multimedia by Jesse Blanca. They have been busy studiously composing and recording a rock opera based on the Oresteia - an Ancient Greek play that's all about what happens to the Greek Royal Family after they win the Trojan War. It's got blood, murder, intrigue, sexual betrayal, matricide, incest, and more murder! They are really made a rock opera. This production is actually more of an experimental theatrical show, closer to a Musical, with song and choreographed dance, as well as video, shadow, and other old school special effects. ...House of Atreus. His interpretation is as follows: The close of the Eumenides is anything but an anticlimax. It is closely knit to the body of the whole trilogy, showing the manner in which the playwright supposes the necessary reconciliation between Zeus and the Furies to be made possible and acceptable. The King of Heaven is mystically identified now and forever with Fate. The joyful procession is the sign not only that the moral government of the world has been set at last upon a sure basis, but also that this government is alreadt in operation and sanctifying human institutions. This is what Owen means when he says: The story is not the poet's subject; his artistic purpose goes beyond the dramatic development of the legend; that is why his play does not end with the story.5 In each play we have pointed out that Aeschylus was not primarily concerned with the legend, and here, it seems, is sufficient evidence to support our contention. What Owen maintains is the subject of the Oresteia is as follows: The subject of the Oresteia is the creation of a new moral order; Aeschylus depicts the vast chain of events which the death of Agamemnon started in heaven and earth, how it and its results shook the 4 5 Norwood, PP• 114-116. Explaining Phobia

...Explaining phobia Fear can often be a temporary emotion experienced while riding a roller coaster, watching a scary movie, and attending a haunted hay ride. Within these experiences fear is often expected by the individual and often the fear is temporary. However, some individuals do not experience fear in a temporary manner, he or she will develop a phobia. A phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation (Cherry, 2012). The individual experiences an intense fear of something but he or she does not understand why the fear is occurring. The fear disrupts the well-being of the individual by causing the intense fear he or she will be harmed or endangered. Sigmund Freud who often provided details to understand the anxieties of the mind by his analysis of his cases studies (Cervone & Pervin, 2010). One such case is the analysis of Little Hans who was young child who suffered from an extreme fear of horses biting him and the fear of leaving his home (Cervone & Pervin, 2010). Freud suggested the case of little Hans produced the most compelling evidence for the positive Oedipus complex and suggested the Oedipus complex is a universal phenomenon (Lachmann, 2010). Freud did not analyze Little Hans personality but uniquely corresponded with Hans’s father about the young child’s phobias and conducted therapy through Hans’s father (Garber, 2001). Freud and Hans’s father would discuss the difficulties Little Hans experienced and Freud would instruct Hans’s father...

Illustration of Justice and Vengeance in Aeschylus's Choephori (the Libation- Bearers)

...“Agamemnon” and followed by “The Eumenides”. The trilogy as a whole, originally performed at the annual Dionysia festival in Athens in 458 BCE, where it won first prize, is considered to be Aeschylus’ last authenticated, and also his greatest, work. “The Libation Bearers” deals with the reunion of Agamemnon's children, Electra and Orestes, and their revenge as they kill Clytemnestra and Aegisthus in a new chapter of the curse of the House of Atreus. Some years after the murder of Agamemnon, Clytemnestra (who now shares both her bed and the throne of Argos with her lover, Aegisthus) has a nightmare about giving birth to a snake which then feeds from her breast and draws blood along with milk. Concerned at the possible wrath of the gods, she orders her daughter, Electra (now reduced to the virtual status of a slave-girl) and the Chorus of slave women - the libation bearers of the title - to pour libations on Agamemnon's grave as an offering to the gods. The Chorus, captives from old wars and loyal to Orestes and Electra, are strongly opposed to Clytemnestra and Aegisthus, and they play a crucial part in explaining the unfolding conspiracy. At her father’s grave, Electra meets her recently returned brother Orestes (who had been banished from the kingdom since his infancy by his paranoid mother). Orestes identifies himself with the snake in his mother's dream, and the two siblings plan to avenge their father by killing their mother and Aegisthus, as Apollo himself has commanded him....

Psychodynamic Stages.

...In Freudian psychology, psychosexual development is a central element of the psychoanalytic sexual drive theory, that human beings, from birth, possess an instinctual libido (sexual energy) that develops in five stages. Each stage – the oral, the anal, the phallic, the latent, and the genital – is characterized by the erogenous zone that is the source of the libidinal drive. Sigmund Freud proposed that if the child experienced sexual frustration in relation to any psychosexual developmental stage, he or she would experience anxiety that would persist into adulthood as a neurosis, a functional mental disorder.[1][2] Contents [hide] 1 Background 2 Freudian psychosexual development 2.1 Oral stage 2.2 Anal stage 2.3 Phallic stage 2.4 Latency stage 2.5 Genital stage 3 Criticisms 3.1 Scientific 3.2 Feminist 3.3 Anthropologic 4 Medical sexological model 5 See also 6 References Background[edit] The neurologist Sigmund Freud, c. 1921. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) observed that during the predictable stages of early childhood development, the child's behavior is oriented towards certain parts of his or her body, e.g. the mouth during breast-feeding, the anus during toilet-training. He argued that adult neurosis (functional mental disorder) often is rooted in childhood sexuality, and consequently suggested that neurotic adult behaviors are manifestations of childhood sexual fantasy and desire. He proposed that adult neurosis (functional mental disorder) often is rooted in childhood sexuality; therefore, said neurotic adult behaviors were manifestations of childhood sexual fantasy and desire. That is because human beings are born "polymorphous", infants can derive sexual pleasure from any part of their bodies, and that socialization directs the instinctual libidinal drives into adult heterosexuality.[3] Given the predictable timeline of childhood behavior, he proposed "libido development" as a model of normal childhood sexual development, wherein the child progresses through five psychosexual stages – the oral; the anal; the phallic; the latent; and the genital – in which the source pleasure is in a different erogenous zone. Freudian psychosexual development Sexual infantilism: in pursuing and satisfying his or her libido (sexual drive), the child might experience failure (parental and societal disapproval) and thus might associate anxiety with the given erogenous zone. The Phenonmenon of Father Absense

...The Phenomenon of “ Father Absence” Reflections on Zweig’s Letter from an Unknown Woman. Abstract The father-absence is a widespread phenomenon in the society nowadays. However, it is recently that people notice the psychological importance of father as a significant influence on female character development. Empirical research has demonstrated various negative outcomes for females in single-parent homes such as being overshy, self-abandoned as well as indifferent to the sorrounding, all of which influence their life-choice. This paper deals with this problem mainly from how psychologically father-absence affects the development of the female character which strongly decides their fate based on Stephan Zweig’s novel: Letter from an Unknown Woman. Key words: father-absence, the Name-of-the-Father 1. Introduction Letter from an Unknown Woman is one of the most famous novels composed by Austrian writer Stephan Zweig. Its cyclically-told tale of romantic yearning and pining for love is embodied in the doomed, delusional relationship of the two romantic leads: a young neighbor girl's steadfast, sacrificial love for a self-absorbed, dilettante writer. Zweig uses the form of the woman’s monologue as a letter to show us a tragic story of her whole life: how she falls in love with her neighbor, keeps faith for him through her whole life while the man has never recognized or remembered her. Many critics believe that the root-cause of this love-tragedy lies in...
