In this paper I will cover the roles that technology in electronic and digital media has

played in the evolvement of time. I will cover the historical and contemporary roles of the mass

media in society and also describe how the chemical and electronic technology of photography,

recording, and transmission has changed from the original discovery to present day. I will also

cover hoe the media uses these technological innovations, analyze how the development of

digital technology has affected the way the content, distribution, and the style of electronic

media and finally discuss exactly how it has evolved over time and had made everyone depend

on them.

The history of the print media and the role that it plays with the government, and society

as a whole has since aged and evolved at a consisting rate. In an age when innovation is

constantly adding to how we define mass media, print media, and technology to maintain its role

and presence in or world. In a very simply way, Businessmedia.com defines the media as” the

industry associated with the printing and distribution of news through newspapers, magazines

and books.” Newspapers, magazines and books are the oldest, most basic form of media that

there is. These forms of media has been changing and evolving for years. As the world and

society change and develop, the mass media world has been changing right along with us. It has

to keep up with society so society can know what is going on in the most updated

Fashion.

Technology plays a very important role in electronic and digital media and it is

continuously changing. Digital and electronic media is available with the invention of the

internet. The introduction of the internet into society has forever changed every things as far as

how we get our information, and just how simple it is to just use the computer or lap top, or

smart phone, or even your tablet. Makes everything a lot more convenient than having to go to

the library to look things up. We as a society has grown dependent on electronic products,

spending less time with people and more time on the internet. Before the internet made its

debut, people were looking to books and the encyclopedia, and other resources to gather the

information they needed. People would also partake in face to face communication to ask

questions of things they did not understand. Now people can “face time” each other from all

around the world. Today’s society is in grossed in technology, they tend to engage in the most

conversations using the social media like face book, twitter, emails, text messaging and cell

phones.

Photography was developed in the first quarter of the 19th century in Western Europe. It

was developed after great exploration of the light properties and it affect the desire to make

reproducible and accurate records of an experience and also due to the progress of the

chemistry and optics. In the past, primitive tools were used to record images on stone

explaining everyday life details. (Earnshaw & Vince 1996). In the mid sixteenth century, J.B.

Porter an Italian philosopher accidently discovered that when light rays penetrate a small hole in

a dark room it produced an image which was upside down. Then he would modify his camera

by replacing the small hole with a convex lens to make the picture come out right side up.

(Earnshaw & Vince 1996).

Electronics and digital technology has come a very long way in the transiting and

translation of all images and information since the 19th century all over the world. From

pictures to videos, to music, to reading materials it has made a huge impact on society and we

tend to need and want all that it is giving to us. We conform to it and we also evolve with it to

the point our children are learning better and wanting to get the information faster and quicker

than before. All the “old school” technology is just that old school, and the youth these days

would have no idea what a record (vinyl) would look like or a polaroid camera, they would be

shocked. It’s a good thing that with times changing all the electronics and digital technology

had better changed as well. I just really don’t see it not.
