ELIC 220- Communication Circuits

Questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Define angle modulation and list its subcategories What is the difference between frequency and phase modulation? What are the merits of an FM communications system compared to an AM system? What is FM undesirable in the standard AM broadcast band? What advantage does FM have over AM and SSB? Define derivation constant? A 50 – mV sinusoid, at a frequency of 1 kHz, is applied to a capacitor microphone FM generator. If the deviation constant for the capacitor microphone FM generator is 500 Hz/20mV, determine a. The total frequency deviation b. The rate at which the carrier frequency is being deviated In an FM transmitter, the output is changing between 90.001 and 89.999 MHz 1000 times a second. The intelligence signal amplitude is 3 V, determine the carrier frequency and intelligence signal frequency. If the output deviation changes to between 90.0015 and 89.9985 MHz, calculate the intelligence signal amplitude. What determines the rate of frequency swing for an FM broadcast transmitter. Define modulation index (mf) as applied to an FM system. What characteristic(s) of an audio tone determines the percentage of modulation of an FM broadcast transmitter? Explain what happens to the carrier in FM as mf goes from 0 to 15. Calculate the bandwidth of an FM system (using Table 3-1) when the maximum deviation () is 15 kHz and fi = 3 kHz. Repeat for fi =2.5 and 5 kHz. What frequency swing is defined as 100% modulation for an FM broadcast station? What is the frequency swing of an FM broadcast transmitter when modulated 60%. An FM broadcast transmitter is modulated 50% by a 7- kHz test tone. When the frequency of the test tone is changed to 5 kHz and the percentage of modulation is unchanged, w hat is the transmitter...

...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few......
