Introduction
In the article, Elgin Sweeper Company’s Journey Toward Cost Management by J. Callan, W. Tredup, and R. Wissinger written for the July 1991 publication of Management Accounting a comprehensive view of the amount of work involved in revamping a company’s accounting system is given. Elgin Sweeper Company is a 76 year old leading manufacturing company of street sweepers’ worldwide. This paper will review the research and application of such a change.
Purpose of Research Elgin Sweeper Company came to identify issues within the company that was affecting their bottom line. The company process involves a great deal of raw product and production planning. As the company began to examine their cost management procedures they found that much of their front end management were not included in the process of budget formulating or accountability. Top management personnel were creating the budgets and not explaining to their subordinates the issues that were at hand. The corporation decided that it needed to invest in their people and not some big accounting system. They needed to teach their staff what a budget was and how their individual areas affected that budget. There was a need and the research proved there was a problem with how their accounting system was currently working and not working. Target Audience This article is geared toward any company who is looking for ways to improve their bottom dollar. It would be beneficial to anyone who is studying for not only any type of accounting program, but also anyone who is interested in business at all. This article points out that without educating staff and making sure that everyone who works for the company knows and understands why budgets and accounting practices are so very important to the success of the company.
